Final Fantasy XIV (PS3, PC) got a lot of cheers when it was announced at the tail end of Sony's E3 2009 presentation, but reactions were generally mixed when gamers spotted "Online" part in the title.

Some have thought that it's essentially a better-looking Final Fantasy XI, only this time for the PS3 instead of the Xbox 360. Final Fantasy XIV producer Hiromichi Tanaka says that isn't the case at all.

"Characters in the trailer looked very similar to the ones in Final Fantasy XI. That's pretty much the only thing that's going to be similar," Tanaka told G4TV. "The gameplay and the story are going to be completely different."

The game is still quite a ways off, but there's apparently going to be a beta period. We'll know exactly how different the two games are then.

» let's...

hope so :)

I tried FFXI and didn't like it at all

» isnt it

technically frank the rabbit? if your gonna try to rip off a donnie darko character get the name right. I played FFXI for 3 years, i had RDM 75, THF 75, PLD 75, and BLM 75, its a great game, but after awhile i got tired of paying to play it. 13 dollars a month for 3 years adds up to quite alot of money, were talking more then 500 dollars for one game. Thats ridiculous.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Ditto. Looked horrible and the game play was WAY MORE complicated then it needed to be. Not fun at all.

That's how MMO devs make their money. You pay for the game, then they get to sit down and do nothing and get paid for a couple of years, because they're getting money from all the subscriptions.

I liked the aesthetics of the game far more than WoW, but, dang, seriously. The menu system needed an overhaul. They should have just payed for Blizzard's UI system and integration of LUA with game data.

» right.

I don't know where all the money of WoW goes into. The few expansions they develop can't be that expensive. The producers must be hella rich.

I mean, I don't know the exact prices, but let's say 10 bucks a month. With 11.5 million active users, that's 115 million dollars A MONTH.

» you guys forgot...

the price to keep those servers up, don't know now much it cost to keep them running, but I'm sure a small chunk is for profit or vice versa.

» very unlikely...

Whenever a game as massive as an RPG goes online its more than likely going to have a subscription, although I'm with you here, I expect that there will be.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Dark nailed it. You guys are playing an ONLINE GAME. You think that's cheap?

You guys forget about updates?

You guys forget about patches?

They have to maintain the hardware AND the software. That's a huge job. Not to mention BACKING UP all that data. You are talking about a MASSIVE data store.

I'm sure they have MANY forms of reduntant backup and you have to maintain all of those as well.

» the menu

was designed for PS2 controllers, I imagined you guys played on PC?

The controls are absolutely horrid with a keyboard and mouse, but workable with a controller.

Whenever I play on PC I plug in a controller

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Hum... good point. I never tried a controller.
