Final Fantasy XIII's Crystal Tools engine demoed with Pigtailed Girl

So how's development on Final Fantasy XIII going? Yoichi Wada went on national TV the other day - well, Japanese national TV - to prove to everyone that, yes, FF13 is indeed going places.

TV Tokyo had an interview with Square Enix's boss about the upcoming game on the PS3 and Xbox 360. And what's cool is that Wada gave viewers a peek into their Crystal Tools engine and showed a model of Pigtailed Girl - y'know, the same girl who summoned Carbuncle in that E3 trailer.

The screens below show lighting effects and a zoom-in on the girl's eye (glad to see it doesn't look "flat"). For the sake of comparison... check out this screen from Heavy Rain.

It might not look much to some of you (remember, these are just developmental renders), but at least we get to see that they're hard at work with their engine. Just the other day, Sony's Yoshida commented that video game technology in Japan was starting to lag. No doubt about it: Square Enix seems to be an exception there.

Anyways, as an aside... I couldn't help but compare the zoom-in of Pigtailed Girl's eye to that of Heavy Rain chick's zoom in. Click here for comparison. Of course, saying that one is better than the other is a moot argument. They're apples and oranges and Heavy Rain is definitely taking a different direction in art than FF13.

» Meh

I would've liked to see this demonstration with "Lightning".

Pig tail girl is kinda cute though...

Wowzers at the detail on her eye. I'm impressed with the color detail done on her iris and the individual strands of eyelashes. Hope this is in-game.

» cute huh?

strange how 0's and 1's can be referred to as "cute" when arranged certain ways

» AWESOME

Wow, that is by squeenix?

are you serious

If I owned a PS3 and was waiting specifically for this game my sub-consious would probably have squeenix forever.

well, not saying that the graphics have much to do about the quality of the game--just that the first ever In-Game screenshot looks 'so' bad...

ロストオデセイー FTW

A very valid point! Hehehe! But it's all just a matter of perspective.

Just like how I can say DNA sequences - combinations of Gs, As, Ts, and Cs - can look "cute" if arranged in a certain way in a human being. ^_^

So yeah, Cactuar Knight's saying that Pigtailed Girl is cute (i.e. a sequence of 1s and 0s) is still within reason.

Star up for both of ya!

» nice

yeah i like the level of detail, but as gino d. said, heavy rain's is much more impressive.

but then again, ff has a lot more to work on, like terrain, magic, and summons. no one's really going to appreciate that the eyes are as detailed as heavy rain's if they're looking at shiva turn into a motorcycle

» Thumbs up to Gino D.

That was a very clever statement.

But as an aside, I think there's a huge disparity between the look of the cinematics and real-time. I'm just a little under-whelmed

» the graphics r so nice but

but i want CG cutscenes ..i know they r the quality of CG but...CG is a little different..like the hair and color mixture ....

» AWESOME

I didn't bring out my point properly...

The Japanese at the bottom says Lost Odyssey

and I mean I would 'hate' squeenix forever...

The In-Game screens from here are so terrible,

» playing devils advocate

i like the detail on heavy rain chick!

but the eyes on the pigtail girl is OK and i hope that japanese devs follows and make it the standard or better.

» too bad

Too bad that actuall Japanese people write it in a totally different manner, eh ?

As for the screens, those aren't ingame-screens, it is just a little demo of a part of the engine they are using to create this game.

This is no representation for the final game.

You fail at Japanese and at the comprehension of this simple fact. Are we, perhaps, a fanboy ?

You can't go comparing the graphics of the completed game Losy Odyssey with a tech demo of the engine being used for FF13.

"They're apples and oranges"

» sigh

And leave it up to QJ's coding to pretty much fail at everything.

Random failing of Japanese input, non-working 'remember me' function, randomly refusing to work image script...

Please guys, fix this. And while you are at it, update the login script so that it redirects to page you were previously viewing and not the main page ;)

this would help, a lot.

As for the Japanese, just look up the game on Wikipedia, copy the name written over here into google and see the hits for that and then do the same with Izuna's ;)

» AWESOME

Hey, I understand don't worry--yes, you are wrong though, I didn't copy and paste... I actually speak Japanese and I'm mixed-race thank you...

anyways.. yes I am a fanboy, i would have Sakaguchi's children, if he made games for the PS3 i would have one already ;)

» You want

a Playstation 3 so you can see the best graphics. FFXIII won't be out until I'm about halfway into Versus FFXIII's 25 GB blu ray disc. Unless Microsoft pays millions to hold off Playstation, like with GTA DLC, which will not fly., and RB2. WAKE UP Microsoft Zombies!
