Heads up, importers and Final Fantasy fanatics alike. Turns out that YouTube ad announcing the Japanese release date of Final Fantasy XIII (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) we saw yesterday was right on the money.

The date -- December 17, 2009 -- was just confirmed by Square Enix president Yoichi Wada during the Final Fantasy XIII Premiere Party earlier today at the National Museum of Science and Innovation in Odaiba. Price has been set at JPÂ¥ 9,240 (roughly US$ 100) including tax.

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai was also at the event, where he announced a Final Fantasy XIII bundle for the PS3. No word yet on whether or not this is Japan-only, but Hirai did say that they'll be releasing more details soon.

The game's international release date remains murky though, as the only thing Wada said about it is that they're "aiming for an international release this Spring." Note that Wada said "international", so there's still a chance for simultaneous -- or close to simultaneous -- US and Euro launches.

Thanks to zman7861 for the tip!

yippieee, but i could never imagine paying 100 dollars for one game... bundles are cool though, since they brought it over to xbox and screwed over the ps3 version a bit as a result that bundle should be an international sony exclusive, we need our repremation

» ouch

$100?

i'd hate to see the price if it were a ps3 exclusive...

» That's in yen.

Selling it back there is different selling it here. No game is gonna go past $70.

...UNLESS IT COMES WITH NIGHTVISION GOGGLES! lol xD.

what does exclusive have to do with game prices? it's not a gaming monolpy.

return on investment...

if they are only able to sell a copy to ps3 owners they limit the amount of potential sales...

for example, if a game costs $50mil to make and the return on investment is only $25 per copy...

they have to sell 2 million copies to break even.

they can get more by raising the price, or they can try to sell more copies... on other systems.

those aren't hard numbers with any factual data, just a theoretical example of how exclusivity CAN effect prices.

Do those goggles even work? Or are they just for show?

ya, ROI is a simple concept, but developers would not raise price just hoping to break even. Nobody would buy a game that is above normal game price. If any developer price an 360/Ps3 exclusive game at $69.99 US, they will not make more profit than the normal price $59.99 unless there is clearly more value offered.

P.S: ROI is a percentage/ratio measuring profit. 2 mil break even if selling price is $25/copy, not ROI $25/copy.

» um.....

it is ps3 exclusive in japan.....

» Hm

It won't be that high out here thank goodness. If it was though I just would not buy it. I'd spend that much for Versus maybe but this game...though I probably could if I didn't know it was watered down until after I bought it (sad face)

» Yes they do

They're not professional grade of course, those run from $300-1k, but they do let you see in the dark. It's actually nothing new, they have a pair they sell in toy stores that does real night vision for $80

» yeah

ok so i shouldn't of thrown that in that sentence...

you understood what i was trying to say. costs have to be offset somewhere...

$100 a game is normal in japan?

@cliff

yes i know, but that isn't relevant in the bigger picture.
