Final Fantasy 13 - Image 1

New info has arrived for Final Fantasy XIII. A recent post on Famitsu reveals quite some interesting details about battle transitions and the lead character. While we can reserve that for later, something else just popped up.

A representative for Square Enix has confirmed to VG247 that your chances of getting an FFXIII (PS3, Xbox 360) demo has been cut short. Apparently, there doesn't seem to be any plans of releasing an English version of the demo:

At present the FINAL FANTASY XIII demo will only be available in Japan with the Blu Ray release of Advent Children Complete. We hope to have further news in the coming months.

*sniff* Well that's a shame...

Moving on though, Famitsu explains more about the game's battle transitions. From the time that you go around exploring the map and then encounter an enemy, the transition will be so smooth you probably won't notice it. (Basically... no more screen-shattering effects?)

Then there's the (confusing) bit about Lightning. Apparently, according to CVG at least, Lightning is just her codename. Her full name is Dia Walruva. Sounds a lot like Vanille's name, which is Dia Oerba, and right now, there seems to be some conflicting translations online. Some say that "Dia Walruva" is actually referring to Vanille, but that the CVG writer somehow confused things. Hmm.

I really enjoy Final Fantasy. 1-10, just amazing.

12, wasn't that great. I remember they released the demo with one of the Dragon Quest games and I played it before starting DQ. I was amazingly underwhelmed. It just wasn't very good. I've sense played 12 and enjoyed some parts, but ultimately my initial impression of the game was what skewed my view, good game or not.

All that said, Squaresoft has been stingy to say the least on screenshots and videos of actual gameplay. It also seems like they might have learned their lesson from FF12 on demos if people like me reacted like me and borrowed it from a friend.

All that said, it makes me worry that they want to withhold information. If you have a great product that you spent millions on, you would advertise it. In fact, the battle system should be the selling point. I'm sure they have their reasons, but from an outsiders perspective it looks like they are withholding videos of gameplay because it is not that good. That was my problem with FF12, so it's an area they need to advertise or at least try to sell to the public. If it's the same as 12, or worse, I imagine I'd only show FMV cutscenes as well.

» oh god.

terrible names. And terrible codenames.

» First and last names

I wonder if the first name and last name are switched meaning that the two characters are related to each other.

» I agree..

I couldn't stand all the great reviews, I though the game was terrible. 1-10 ridiculously good, 11 wasnt a FF game period, 12, battles sucked, couldnt care for the characters. i dont if i didnt understand the story, or just didnt care too. in fact, i played for hours and beat..... still couldnt tell u the story. past games always had memorable passionate moments...... 12....no. I pray 13 goes back. you either go turn based, or full action zelda style, no inbetween crap. oh and the summons!.... uhh, ill stop here.

» agree

I agree with Shazman1984 the first 10 games ruled big time loved them will always love them every since 12 cause 11 doesn't count, very bad idea final fantasy online who tought that sh*t up but that is irrelevant at this time. FF12 was just horrible couldn't follow the story, heck was there even a story lol, the characters could have done without, couldn't seem to care for them like other from past FF's. Oh and SquareEnix's biggest mistake was getting ride of the old turn based battle system, there is a rule they must have forgotten along the way IF ITS NOT BROKE THEN DON'T FIX IT. If they wants to win the hearts of millions of FF fans then they would go back old school, to what fans loved excellent stories, lovable characters ie FFVII

» darn you, SE

I think there goes a couple of Advent Children sales right there with this move.

» good point

Dia would be a sensible last name, and Walruva is probably a translation error.

by Allstaraugustine - 2009-01-12 08:51
» yeah

the battle system in crisis core and 12 was weak in my opinion. i avoided battles..

i say go with either turned base like 10, or just the classic.

(or maybe something new and amazing cooked up)

» i dunno

but i seem be losing interest in final fantasy as of late. i played 7 9 and 10, and played that damn ffxi for 2 yrs and it burnt me out of the whole FF gig. and now hearing this makes me wonder if i wanna buy the new advent children.

» FF11

Just because you don't have a credit card does not mean ff11 sucks, i highly doubt you've even played it, so just shut up

I. Hate. XII. Hate it. Biggest let down of my video game playing life.

All the other real final fantasy games were phenomenal though. I'm not too worried about 13, seeing as it's almost the exact team from 6-9. That's what I look at more than anything on a game is who's developing it. If it's a developement team I trust, I have more faith in the final product.

» I don't blame them.

Releasing the demo out of Japan would be a bad idea. The Japanese latch on to anything even if it's a crappy RPG but that's not the same around the world. If they released the demo in the US then everyone would know how much the game really sucks and wouldn't even think about buying it anymore and Square-Enix knows this because they don't care about quality anymore. FF13 will flop (bu...bu...but the sales! yeah, a game can sell a lot and be a flop just look at GTA4 it had a lot of sales and was rated high yet it was a flop of a game).

» 2 Funny

that is to funny Sony_Player i bet u use that one for all your comments you arrogant Sh*t, and yes i have played it jack**f, just cause i have my own opinion towards a game does not mean that i don't have a credit card. So i think u need to shut UP

This sound's like a mixture of the FFXII and the old battle systems. I don't know why so many people are saying FFXII sucked just 'cause they didn't like the battle system. FFXII was made by the B team, the team that made FFT and Vagrant Story, and sure not many people liked the battle system but I know many who loved it because it was different. You can't expect a series as long as FF to have the same style battle system forever especially when we're talking about next gen games.

» XII lacked in story, but Battles far from sucked.

I actually enjoyed the Battle System, it was a refreshing brake from the same old boring turn based system we've been seeing for years.

I can see if people don't like it because of Gambits making it too easy, but still, it's not like you NEED to have gambits on, the only things I really used gambits for were, telling party members to attack what I'm attacking, when to heal and when to cure status allignments, anything else I'd switch characters and do manually.

The story was pretty...lame compared to past Final Fantasies though, but I think that they were more focused on making a new battle system then story.

I don't know how XIII's story will turn out, I'm buying it either way (PS3 and proud of it, been waiting for too long), however, with the Kingdom Hearts team working on Versus I can be sure that Versus will have a great story.

by thefinalhero - 2009-01-13 03:07
» Wow...

Do people actually think that Final Fantasy would keep its longevity if it used the same battle system over and over? Come on.

I hope someone buys up Midway, I want to see another Shadow Hearts game, I forget what the ring was called, but it was a neat system.

by Genotype - 2009-01-13 03:35
» The ring

it is called the judgment ring. I also like the ring system in Lost Odyssey, and the move system in Legend of Dragoon. There all things that could pep up a standard battle system.

by sycoblast - 2009-01-13 03:58
» same but for different reasons

im not into the turn based style of gameplay but since vurses is like kingdom hearts style should be very fun
