FFXIII: 720p, 30fps, pauseable/skippable cut scenes, readable text on different screens

Final Fantasy 13 - Image 1
"Snow, do these subtitles make me look fat?"

The latest issue of Famitsu in Japan has an interview with Final Fantasy XIII (PS3, Xbox 360) director Motomu Toriyama.

In the interview, Toriyama reveals that they're just about done. All elements of the game are pretty much complete, and right now, "it's a matter of putting them together." Before the final version of the game though, they still plan to revise the battle system a bit more and inch it closer to pure, marinated perfection.

Meanwhile, the current build that they're testing with is running at 720p and clocked at 30fps. Fair enough, fair enough. What Square Enix wants is to allow gamers to enjoy the game no matter what TV they have - that means tweaking the text to be readable on a standard analog TV. Umm, right, we don't want a Tiny Text redux of Banjo Kazooie, now do we?

Then there's also the matter of cut scenes. Though it's not surprising considering how the past few Square Enix games have been, it's now confirmed that cut scenes can be paused and/or skipped.

If you were wondering about the demo that's to be released later this month via the FF7ACC Blu-ray, Famitsu reports that it's going to clock about an hour and a half of gameplay.

I wish the ps3 would upscale at least to 1080P

Silver tiger they want it to be 720P for people that don't have 52+ inch LCD screens in their living rooms ok! I'm one of them i have a Samsung T220HDTV 22 inch LCD screen and it also does 1080P but I run mostly at 720P.

Its 720 because its also on 360. They had to make the games the same for both consoles, and they didnt want to put the 360 version on 12 discs, so they lowered the grafix. If they built it for ps3 only they would have no problem increasing the grafix to 1080 and still fit it on one disc. As an RPG id expect it to have insane grafix and an incredible plot, but i guess not so mutch on the grafix anymore. Lets hope vs13 is 1080

people today care way too much about graphics, I hope they put more time into making a great rpg (since they seem to have forgotten how to do that) then focusing on the graphics

Running in a higher resolution doesn't equal more space taken up. A game that runs in 720p will have the same assets, textures and polygon count as it would in 1080p and thus take up the exact same amount of space on a disc. Going from 720p to 1080p is technical point that requires more work from the GPU and to a lesser extent CPU.

Take in point Killzone2, running natively in 1080i because native 1080p is VERY demanding on the hardware - which most devs opt out of to get better performance in terms of FPS and effects within the game world.

Finally, 720p looks great! You'd be hard pressed to notice a huge difference between 720p and 1080p. There's no need to flip out over nothing.

Who cares if one game has 5 to 12 discs. are you too fraking lazy to get off your fraking ass and switch disc.

Remember when the FF7 had 4 discs?

will upscale if you have a 1080p TV and tick off everything but 1080P. Not sure how great the upscale is since I always prefer to play in native resolution.

It looks better on small TVs especially when you sit close to it like a computer monitor. Why do you think even though most computer monitors wont go over 30in that they have crazy resolutions that are beyond 1080p. Your specific monitor supports the 1080p signal but actually doesn't have the pixels to go full 1080p. It gets really close though at 1680 x 1050. If a game runs native 1080p I would play at 1080p. No reason to go down to 720p.

Final Fantasy VII was 3 disks, and besides, if a game was on multiple disks 12 years ago, don't you think that means it's a bit dated and should change, I mean pc games used to come like on 20 floppy disks

That people would prefer that games be on a single disk. Not that they are lazy, but what happens if disk 7 of 12 happens to get messed up? You cant proceed to disk 8, and each time you start over you are limited to only getting to that certain point. I know that it is quite possible to go out and rent the game or borrow it from a friend, but all of that is an unneeded hassle that is easily remedied by making games fit on a single disk.

# 1080i/p is a larger texture than 720pdamonous 2009-04-08 10:34
@hush404: Only partially true. A 1080p texture map will indeed be LARGER in size than a 720p texture. (If the developer is indeed running every texture at full-res.) Simple common-sense. Take a picture with a 3.2 megapixel camera vs one with 1.3 megapixels. Very much a difference in size, if the same compression algorithms are used. .....Now, I will concede that PS3 games aren't "always" 1080p. And, (I think) since 360 uses a hardware scaler, more games on 360 tend to be advertised as "1080i" or "1080p". However, many online discussions/analysis have been made over whether or not the 'overall resolution' of a game is really the actual texture resolution, or just an internal upscale. ....Long story short: YES, 720p certainly looks great. But, on any true-HD (1080p) digital screen over 37" (and, to my eyes, over 20") easily resolves a NOTICEABLE difference vs 720p. So, NO: I would NOT agree that "...you'd be hard pressed to notice a huge difference.."

Lot's of smaller LCD's will do native 1080P, unfortunately yeah your samsung is not true 1080p, regardless of what it says...it will do 720P no problem.

I have a viewsonic vx2260wm, which is full 1080p....it's only 22 inches and I will tell you, 1080p games look much better than 720p ones....

It all depends on viewing distance really...with a 22 inch screen at 1080p you have to sit very close, on a 60inch tv...you sit far away....

So ya, 1080p is always preferred....rarely going to get it with any game that has a crazy amount of detail....still not sure how MGS4 pulled it off.

Yeah, I can definately tell the difference between a native 720p game and a native 1080p game.

Also, that is where size comes in. It depends if a game is native 720p (built with 720p textures) and being scaled up....or if it's native 1080p....and gets scaled down if you are in 720p....

Also, ya, 90% of 360 games say they are 1080p, because of the hardware scaler....but they are definately not native 1080p. Halo 3 basically confirms this as it was found out to be 640p or something around there, yet the box says 1080p.....

who cares if its on 7 discs

when you first turn it on it will probably ask for a light, medium or heavy install depending on your HDD space with heavy install meaning only need disc 1 to start the game then the rest is on HDD.

# hush404 is 100% correct!PS34ME 2009-04-08 19:01
the monitor/tv SCREEN resolution has nothing to do with the texture resolution, and 720p for FF has NOTHING to do with the 360.

what resolution is your PC running at right now guys? 1024*768? 1600*1200? 800*600? check it out. what ever it is, right now you are downloading/viewing exactly the SAME images and videos as EVERYONE else online, but it is scaled to the resolution of YOUR screen. someone running their PC at only 800*600 res is not downloading less data than you if you're running at 1600*1200, and you would laugh if someone told you that. the data is exactly the same, it's only the screen res that's different.

take any PC game and you can run it at any resolution your PC can take. again, the game size doesn't magically grow or shrink on your hd because of the resolution, the textures are exactly the same, but the framerate would drop as the screen res increases or you add fillrate demanding features like anti-aliasing.

so like on the pc, it's limited by the gpu power and ram available. 1080p has over twice as many pixels as 720p, so 1080p needs twice the gpu pixel power compared to 720p. if the ps3 was able to run FF at 1080p, then it would do so! but we know it can't because it can only manage 30fps at 720p. if it was 60fps, then it may have been possible to run the game at 1080p and 30fps.

in all my years dealing with multi disc games

i have found that its disc one with all the signatures and anti piracy (especially pc. get the doom3 pack with 3 CDs and backup disc 2 and 3, you'll see what i mean)

you should be able to back up all discs except for disc 1 (which makes sure the whole game isnt pirated.

and to shatterdome.

"what if one of the discs gets ****ed up"

if you install it on your HDD you only need it once, what are you doing with your discs when they are not in use that would f*** them?

This is consoles we are talking about, and while the install option is available, it is not possible for most people due to the ***** that is Microsoft's proprietary HDD pricing.

then you face exactly the same problem a gamer would face if the ONE disc a game came on "gets *****ed up". :P

one disc is preferable, but multi-disc games have been around for many years. it's not a problem, just less convenient. :)

the tiny detail squeenix release about the game at a time is plain annoying, they are just trying to get your attention until the game comes out

I llove Final Fantasy games but there seems to be no solid ground 2 as how this game will stand, they can sound dam serious for one day and the next totally make up their minds and do something else

the more and more they do this.........the more and more this game seems 2 become like a dream, a hungry attention seeking dream. It just keeps poking at you but it will never give you something 2 hold on 2.
