FCC: PS3 to change model number and parts |
Ó
Shortly after we reported that Sony discreetly sent notice to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that it intends to change parts in its current PlayStation Portable models, we've caught sight of another interesting notice. This time it concerns the PlayStation 3.According to the FCC page, Sony wants to change the model number and the parts of the PS3. Details were under the radar because of a confidentiality clause.
That's pretty much all we can tell you at this point. Could this have something to do with the exodus of the 80GB PS3? Is a new SKU on the way? We'll see in the weeks to come.

what's the benefit from changing SKUs every few months? It just makes me feel like my 60gig is old. Then I remember that I have hardware backwards compatibility and =)
I've got the 60GB model, too, and the only thing that makes me envious of these different models is when they have a larger hard drive. And, of course, that itself can just be replaced, so in the end, I'm fine.
It has to be the 120GB model, probably with a Dualshock 3 included. Hopefully they'll retain PS2 backward compatibility and 4 USB ports of the 80GB model while adding the 65nm cell chip. I don't give a crap about the memory card readers, I've never used them.
This will be a very competive model at $500.
Well... if they introduced the cheaper, smaller parts to the model of the 60gb with a 120+gb HD it would be the ultimate SKU. While offering a cheaper, smaller HD but similar in other ways SKU.
I love my 60gb and plan on upgrading it's HD to 250gb and thus shouldn't have a prob with space for a long time.
I'm currently in the process of updating my Nov 17. 60 GB PS3 to a 320 GB western digital HDD :)
I think their trying to find a good SKU to sell, but I dont really care if they change it now cause I got my 60GB already +]. But I think its good to have a choice in which you want to buy, if you see the one you want at the right price you go and pick it up.
Interesting, I hope it'll end up like what MCS said (except, Sony developed a 45nm cell processor, it was on an article but kinda old, may be on the Gadgets section).
As long as it has backwards compatibility, 4 USB ports, and a decent hard drive, I'll probably end up getting it.
"while adding the 65nm cell chip"
-> I thought the new Cell chip is 45 nm.
