Now that the PS3 Slim has been officially revealed, what's next for Sony? How about a PS3 Slim with a bigger hard drive? That's what an FCC document unearthed by PS3News is hinting at.

The document, which you can view in PDF form by clicking here, lists a 250GB version of the PS3 Slim with the model number CECH-2001B along with a pair of Slim debug models. The one that Sony announced at GamesCom sports a 120GB hard drive.

So, another new PS3 model so soon after the Slim? It's possible, although since this one has a bigger hard drive be ready to pay more for it if it ever gets announced. The FCC tested the 2001B back in march, so we may hear something about it at TGS. If the price ends up too high, well, you can always just buy a bigger hard drive and swap it with the one in the Slim.

Note that if you look through the FCC documents you'll notice that it was filed not by Sony, but by a company called Sand Dollar Enterprise, Inc. A little sleuthing reveals that Sand Dollar is actually located in SCEA's Foster City, CA, address. PS3News also points out that Sand Dollar is represented by SCEA's general counsel, Riley Russell.

I've got 500gb drive but I don't have the PS2 compatibility :(

by papajag - 2009-08-19 13:17:10
@hush404

Same here. I should have waited for the 500GB. But to be honest, you don't really need 250GB. 120GB is good enough. Damn this is like the week of the PS. I can't wait to see what MS does with there marketing plans.

I dont understand why Sony includes a game with their console, what do they think everyone is gonna like the game they put in? Why not give some kind of voucher that lets you pick out a game for free when buying your PS3? Or give you something that lets you download one free game from the PS Store?

Depends what you do with it I guess. I like that I can install anything I like without having to worry how big the file is (well except for downloading of course cos my connection speed during evenings is terrible). I store a lot of movies and music on there and I'll be getting PlayTV soon which makes use of a fair bit of space for a full install and recording. I got 10gb partitioned for Linux and I run emulators on that for things like SNES, Amiga and arcade games. Overall I'm just happy I'm not stuck with 40gb anymore. Pretty much had to delete something every time I bought something off the store or a new game on disc that wanted to install several gigs. And the 500gb only cost £69.99 anyways.

500GB Samsung Spinpoint

I have a 500GB drive and barely scratch 250GB. I have movies and music on my PS3, but I don't see myself using up much more space. I could have bought a 320GB and been fine. I do hope that the slim is still able to be upgraded without voiding any warranty.

So much hype in general with this PS3 slim.... am I the only one who thinks the original PS3 is better looking? I thought the PS3 was a GREAT looking console.. nice and shiny too.

by TPot - 2009-08-19 16:39:47
ummm.

When you think about it... It is a toy and it is meant to be thought of as cheap. Maybe it looks just the way Sony want it.

I WOULD be suprised.

I know that just because something still exists you think that people will still use it. I used to think that way. Maybe they do, though. But it's a stupid idea to use dial-up internet and it has been for 6 years. I could be mistaken for having a mixed up memory with this, but, I remember dial-up and DSL having same monthly costs. DSL is still pretty bad but it's decent if it's found to be cheaper than cable. But for games, PS3, Xbox 360? Cable. Cable or I'm placing you on my block list on PSN you damn lagger!

by UltimaArmorX - 2009-08-19 21:45:36
Wasn't it safe to say

a year or two ago, that sony doesn't adjust their products to the customers liking all or most of the time? Well I believe it. I won't forget all of those firmware updates that's only purpose was stopping us from running home-brewed code. And, I don't recall surveys or questionaires referring to a revamped PS3 model. I personally find these revamps of PSP and PS3 to be annoying. Because I see it as bait for suckers who think "it's time to upgrade to the newest technology". Nothing is new about it. ALL HAIL THE PS3 TANK!

by kimdrummel - 2009-08-20 02:56:10
Hey,

Is there anyone other than me to think that the slim looks very "disassemble-friendly"? The underside of it looks just like the PS2 Slim and that one is reeeaallyy disassemble-friendly. :D My fingers are itching to pick one apart...

ps3 slim/pspgo

@ultima dude, they made these versions to capture new market. everyone who has either consoles is probably not going to buy the revamp versions. if they do, then chances are they got money. if they're poor and still get a the revamp, then they should check themselves cause we in a recession stupid

by chessboxer - 2009-08-20 19:09:35
I've had a 500GB for 11 months

and my HDD has been nearly full (always under 10GB free) since the beginning of the year. I'll get a PS3 Slim once 1TB HDD's are available and give my BC PS3 a well deserved rest.

by chessboxer - 2009-08-20 19:13:48
My Core i7 975

cost more than 2 PS3's and a 360 Arcade but I know what I'll be using to play God Of War 3 and Uncharted 2.

by zzk2001 - 2009-08-24 12:24:44
@truk

If i would be buying a New Ps3 or PSP right now I would NOT get the crappy New versions. I did not save up all that money just to get a Lower costing PS3 with all the Good things taken out that sold me on the system in the first place. One of the main points that Sold me on the PS3 was the PS2 on it as i need to buy a New Ps2 and i had many Ps2 games (I was going to buy the PS3 anyways as i love new Tech) So the PS2 add to the Ps3 Was the best thing in the world for me. And what really placed the PS3 Over the Top for me was getting All the USB ports and Card reads slots, (And yes i use All 4 USB prost (still wish it was 6 like they said it was going to have) Being able to Pick Any Playstation Game at a Store and Not worry if it will play or not Is the best filling, And the fact that Most Ps2 games have Much better Game play and story lines then the Newer PS3 games coming out. ps.. i think Anyone who Needs a New PS2 and Is wanting a PS3 should really get a "PS3 60g" version (IF they can find it)
