FCC document hints at possible PS3 Elite?

FCC Document about a PS3 Eilte? - Image 1Say what? A PS3 Elite? *awkward silence* Just right after the official announcement of Microsoft's Xbox 360 Elite, things couldn't get any more unsettling. As Kotaku reports, Sony could possibly be working on an upgraded PS3 so much so that it was dubbed to be the "PS3 Elite." This speculation was born due to a document filed to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) earlier this month.

The document is posted on the right - don't strain your eyes, click to enlarge - and if you look closely, it outlines a request for making a new PlayStation 3 model (CECHE01) which will include 80GB of storage.

The current models, CECHA01 and CECHB01, respectively have 60GB and 20GB capacities. So what's this now about a 80GB model? Kotaku speculates:

Could this new hard disk represent a totally new model or simply a storage upgrade? Will the 80GB PS3 at some point become the lower-end model? We've heard in the past from inside sources that the Ken Kutaragi was pushing for the introduction of a 250GB model PS3, so future models of the console may feature increased storage.

Well, whether it be an entirely new model or a simple storage (and Bluetooth) update, this does not sit well with Karraker's recent statement about how "no one is going to get shortchanged at the end of the day, whether they bought one on day one or just yesterday." But now, if they're planning to make an upgraded PS3, wouldn't that be considered "shortchanging" those who've already bought a unit?

There's no confirmation about details regarding this CECHE01 model, and who knows, maybe it was never even approved to begin with? We'll keep you guys posted as soon as we hear anything official.

If it is just a hard drive upgrade, then I don't think anyone was shortchanged. I've already swapped out my 20GB HDD to a 160GB HDD. Then again, what else can they upgrade?

I have no problem if Sony wants to upgrade the HD size in their console, and I expected this would be the case when I bought my 60 gig in December.

Look at Apple and the iPod - they upgrade the storage while keeping the price the same. If Sony wants to upgrade the PS3 HD to 80 gig in a year (after a price cut) then I doubt people will take issue with that - I certainly won't. As long as they don't add/remove features (and a larger HD isn't adding a feature), then it's not a big deal.

It's just a HDD update, also these new PS3s will follow the PAL PS3 with the removal of the Emotion Engine Processor and contain the 65mm Cell instead of the 90mm Cell in the original NTSC PS3s.

It looks like the 60GB model is the new basic model and the 80GB model is the new premium. That means all versions of the PS3 going forward will have the chrome trim, card readers and built-in wifi.

Still doesn't shortchange the 20GB adopters, since they can just buy a wireless bridge and larger HDD cheap. =)

And 80GB is still too small, then again so is the Elite 360's 120GB.

How did the person that posted the image get a hold of the document or image of it? I thought documents like this should be kept private until made official and approved.

About the hard drive upgrade, it is not big of a deal. 20Gb more than 60GB is not that much. By now, most have already upgraded their 20GB or 60GB to something higher. I am thinking that Sony might use the 80GB with their 65nm Cell Processor PS3.

But that's not what that Krakker moron said about the new XBOX 360! They might be taking out the emotion engine in other regions to so only 1 of 3 PS2 games work right again.

if i am sony i will not release an 80gb ps3, im not that that stupid to release something like that knowing my competitor has 120gb. sony is not dumb. if sony is cooking up something i bet it will be outright way better than xbox360 elite's offerings. or as common sense tells if it sucks nobody will buy it.

then now its me talking, does everybody really wanna play all the old ps1 and ps2 games on ps3? i wonder? me i still have my chubby reliable ps2 for such gaming habit.

too much publicity on the compatibility issue which is really nothing but an excuse to curse a new pricey technological product. i see what the ps3 is capable and i myself say im impressed but still wanting more. anyways rest assured sony will give what sony fans crave and that is total entertainment.

As long as you are ranting about an unsubstantiated rumor, why don't you rip on them for the other two mystery models.

Or maybe you didn't realize..

CECH(A)01

CECH(B)01

CECH(E)01

Clearly there are two other models there which Sony secretly shipped to their hardcore fanboys. That is why so many people have bought PS3, when "Mr. Common Sense" would dictate otherwise.

And you haven't even mentioned the super secret CECHF01 which is the ultra elite 120GB model which I have.. Oh wait... I'm the one who put that in.

Sony to Introduce “Multimedia-Oriented” PlayStation 3

Sony Promises Third PlayStation 3 Version for Video Enthusiasts

[ 12/29/2006 | 09:20 AM ]

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.’s PlayStation 3 is already a multimedia powerhouse with advanced processing capabilities as well as support of one of the next-generation digital video disc format. However, Sony is mulling to create a version of the console that would appeal more to those wishing to use the PlayStation 3 not as a gaming machine on the first place, but as a primary video player.

The “media-centric” PlayStation 3 will feature capabilities of consumer electronics devices and will be more focused on digital media content playback, rather than on gaming. Based on claims reportedly made by executives of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., PC Watch web-site reports that the PlayStation 3 “media-centric”-edition will feature anti-vibration mechanism on the Blu-ray disc drive, 512MB XDR memory, more advanced power supply unit and two HDMI connectors to divide audio and video data.

The third version of the PlayStation 3 will also have a new design that matches other consumer electronics products and is unlikely to be totally similar to the currently sold PlayStation 3 gaming machines. Still, all the games for the PlayStation 3 should play absolutely well on the device.

According to comments reported to had been made by executives of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., the PlayStation 3 game machine is unlikely to be sold by SCEI, but more probably to be supplied by Sony itself under Sony brand.

Given that in the consumer electronics industry manufacturers do not subsidize hardware in hope to compensate their losses by selling many games, it is highly likely that the console, which currently costs $840 to manufacture, will be sold at a premium price. The Japanese web-site noted an executive at SCEI as saying that the price range could be from ¥200 to ¥300 thousand ($1680 to $2520).

Sony PlayStation 3 console is based on the Cell processor developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba, the RSX graphics chip by Nvidia Corp. and will be equipped with Blu-ray optical disk drive. There are two versions of the PlayStation console available today: one is equipped with 20GB hard disk drive and priced at $499, another features 60GB hard drive, card reader and some other improvements and is offered for $599.

Man HDD's are cheaper everyday. I can go into Best Buy right now and find a 500gb external WesternDigital for $200 or less. Even cheaper if I bothered to look online. Microsoft needs their ass kicked for charging gamers so much for so little. Bill Gates is a slick hustling geek.

# shortchanged?Guest 2007-03-29 10:11
Nice work QJ! Make it a flame war. As prices come down on hardware, they will add things like a larger harddrive. Nobody gets shortchanged because we can all just get a cheap upgraded hd. Not like we got a version without the bluray... And at some point they will have to incorporate the 65nm chips, and need new fcc approval for the device. At the same time, might as well throw in a larger hard drive, since the prices continue to drop. If they did something like release a new console with 2gb of ram, that would be shortchanging...

But this is like saying that releasing the slim ps2 was shortchanging the original buyers... Cause it looked better.

Not like sony is charging their loyal customers $180 for a 120 gb hd, which should retail at $80... But hey, Vista should be XP sp3.

Was that 250gb model coming out tomorrow, or 5 years from now when a ps3 cost $25? You don't know right, use some common sense.

Sony's problem with the 2 different 360's was that one had no hard-drive, meaning dev's would not be able to fully take advantage of it. Something like the ps2 hard-drive.

Now Sony laughs at M$ adding an hdmi port because the xboys and everyone that works at M$ were happy with their red/green/blue.

Do I need to point out this is just a hard-drive upgrade, not putting in features you should have anyway?

Dude if your going to have that name you have to at least try, damn.
