Famitsu: Sony may cut PS3 prices soon

Sony PS3 - Image 1According to popular Japanese game magazine Famitsu, Sony may soon "slash the price" of its high-end game machine, the PlayStation 3. Along with that, some changes in the supply quantity of the console may happen.

The PlayStation 3 has enjoyed good sales so far around the world, but still trails its rivals Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii in sales due mainly to the high price point it carries. A bundled PS3 can sell for as much as US$ 900 inclusive of taxes, limiting the crowd with the purchase power to buy it.

Japan is a wonderful country with warm and ingenious people and a fascinating culture. The Nippon language is absolutely great, and it would be great if we English-speakers could all learn it.

Unfortunately, that's not the case for us here. Okay, we admit! That's about all we understood from the Japanese text! If anyone can do a better translation of the text in the read URL, do everyone a favor and post it in the comments section.

Finally coming around.

Sony finally realized the price point was a huge mistake and need to start to getting those consoles out if they want to "profit in the long haul." They relied too much on their name brand, but the ultimate decider is money. With a few exclusives dissappearing, continual profit loss, job cuts, dissappointing sales in all regions (I'm including our brothers over in the UK since retailers are price slashing to unload their stock.), and having more supply than demand (economics is a funny thing), that I think this will be a much needed lesson to Sony. That being on top is no easy thing to do. It's something one has to continue to work at. I am outraged though that if a price cut does ensue so soon, those of us who purchased early got royally screwed. But on the upside, this will force the 360 to price cut as well and I've been wanting one of those.

ah

weren't they going to lower the price by 100$ in September - November? I guess we have to wait and see

how hard is it...

to hire a staff writer or an intern that is fluent in both languages. for a news blog site that deals primarily in electronics and video games... you'd think the japanese market would be a premiere source of information. every week you get new news from these japanese sites, and cant do anything but "Ooooh, look at the pictures!". please hire someone

maybe

are they lowering the price close to the 360 elite launch?

PS3

I still can't find a good reason to justify buying a PS3 at this point. Blue Ray, in my opinion, after researching I have concluded, will choke and every game available for the PS3 is available for the 360 save a few, and of those that aren't, they don't seem to be of a quality to change my mind. I am taking a wait and see attitude. I am pretty confident that ultimately I will buy one, just not for some time.

Yay for Babel Fish!

From what I can tell from the babel fish translation is that the article is debunking a price drop. All Sony is doing is adjusting the prices so the PS3 is 39,000 yen after tax instead of 39,000 yen plus tax. Technically it is a price drop but they are just adjusting the price to reflect a change in the Japanese pricing. Nintendo started doing this last year with its pricing.

no price cut from sony for 2-3 years

Since I don't give a s*it about blu ray and it has absolutely no gaming advantage, I would pay $400 at the most for a 60gb model. If they had only done that in the first place, I would have bought one instead of an XBOX 360. Do they even have a game out that needs (not uses) more than 9gb?

Outrage

If it wasn't worth the price you paid then why did you buy it? Prices always drop eventually there is no reason to be outraged when it was your choice to buy or not.

I think...

this is alot of peoples stance who were/are not die hard sony fans. The intital sales were high because of all the diehards that would buy the system even if it was twice the price and no games being released for years. Now that those people have bought it though, everyone with half a brain is standing back and saying "Well it sure doesn't look twice as powerful....and why am I supposed to pay more if I don't want blu-ray (which beleive it or not, most people don't give a ***** about).... That's why in march 360 outsold PS3 in NA....probably would have in EU as well, if it wasn't the launch month...we will see end of april...

No...

No game "needs" it at all. The only reason games use more is that devs can be lazy and don't need to think about compression. Also (like oblivion) the devs have duplicated the data on the disk 3 times, as to increase seek times on the slow blu-ray....so it's not even possible to make games bigger then 9 gig....if they do that just means either longer load times or installing the entire game on your HDD...then whats the point of BD ? Oh yeah, so Sony can sell their movies and hope they won't get pirated....nothing to do with gaming...

yeh

Yeh you mght be on to somethng there. As the release of the Elite was all in Sony's Marketing Plan. So they might counter the elite release with lowering the price of the PS3 to roughly maybe only $20 or $20 extra then the elite. If they do this, then this would be an amazing move by sony, as people would see it as two new consoles both at roughly the same price but one has a brand name 'playstation' and will possibly go for that. I hope sony make this vital move and begin to start selling a lot more PS3's. If the do this and have the release of Playstation Home in October I think Sony will have a big fanbase once again, as the lower price, the brand name, the free online and playstation home will appeal to a lot of people.

ummmmmmmmmmm

"No game "needs" it at all. " First of all, blu ray load times are no different than DVDs, at least noticable. Load times depend on the console itself. In fact, the ps3 has better loading times than the xbox 360. And uncompressed files = more quality. So think about it... Oh yeah, and i think that Sony should cut prices at around 25-50 dollars. I dont know...

...umm y did dey rename da same thing

U kno wats funny, 360 elite is just mor memory in a black case, if i want mor memory ill just unscrew my ps3 harddrive n pop a new 1 in, rather den buy a new system

You don't understand what I stated Thabor.

It would be retarded if that was the case you just stated, my outrage is brought on by how soon it followed it's initial launch. Even Apple states that any price drop within 6 months of their purchases allow me to receive money back to meet the newly dropped price. I am sure you just didn't notice the "so soon" that followed my statement of "outrage."

No Buyer's Remorse Here

Hell, I even bought a Sony Bravia just for my PS3!!!! although it is quite fast... if i didn't buy my console during launch (im in OZ) then it might have been an issue for me... But since i bought mine in Myers Sydney on midnight launch i got AUD1,200 worth vouchers/coupons... i saved up AUD35 on my extra sixaxis and AUD15-25 on every game i buy (depends on which coupon i use) and i've already bought a good number of games and i play all of them... i'm going to be using another voucher next week when i get Oblivion... got a discount on small things such us HDMI cable too... and if u want to get a camcorder, home theater, lcd tvs, mp3 players and such there's a voucher for that too some of them is a discount of AUD500... i've already saved close to AUD250 and i'm not half-way thru my coupons yet... so i still think i'll get a better deal even if they lower PS3 price considerably... we don't really have to count the Taladega Nights and Casino Royale Blu Rays that i got too...

spot on

Frankly this guy is right, how can you be a credible news source if you dont understand half the news you read! Surely its not that hard! I can speak Japanese, and can put you in touch with someone if thats what you need. Well said Hermit

Storage space

Games will "need" a lot more storage space, and fast. That's a quote from Kojima, and others say the same. Look at PS2. it started off using regular CD's at first. Tekken Tag fit on a CD at the early stages of the consoles life, but Tekken 5 has to be on a DVD along with many many other games. Games will need Blu-Ray storage space soon, and we'll probably even see multi Blu-Ray discs. That said, that doesn't mean developers dont make use of some of the extra space to avoid compression, and will probably continue to do so. But games will grow, and fast.

.

Resistance and Motorstorm have absolutely no need to be 13gb. None whatsoever
