F1 Championship Edition: living, breathing example of the PS3's power |

The critically-acclaimed Formula One racing sim, Formula One Championship Edition for the PS3, exhibited a glaring example of the huge power the Playstation 3 houses inside. The racing sim dares to push the envelope past virtual visuals and sits right next to realism. N'Gai Croal of Newsweek had a few questions for SCE Studio Liverpool's Game Director Graeme Ankers about the game and just how sexy it looks on the PS3.
From the interview, Ankers pointed out that the game was specifically built to put the title into a worthy next-generation level. So everything from damage modeling, high-definition rendering and life-like AI to the captivating simulation gameplay and every bit of detail was under scrutiny. If anything just didn't look real enough, they put it back to the drawing board until it comes out exceeding expectations or just right.
"One of the key challenges you face when developing a game for Playstation 3 is making sure everything in the game consistently hits the high benchmarks you've set yourself," Ankers explained.
The game allows the player to race against 21 other cars in a single track. A single car on the track uses as much memory as 22 cars would use for the PS2 version. Everything they had estimated came close enough that difficulties in realizing the next-generation level of detail for the game were minimal. And the weather effects... whew! Are they a sight to look at or what?
Ankers explained that the game models realistic rain. And it's not done on a looped way like other games have done before. The rain is simulated per droplet, meaning each drop can have a different impact effect, splash direction and splash area on the car, your helmet view and on moving parts like tires.
Cars veering off course or navigating turns will actually show how water sprays off the wheels from the wet track or from the rain. The game models each droplet by using the PS3's unique CELL architecture.
Even though the game doesn't delegate SPUs to specific tasks, each SPU is called on to do jobs in a priority basis. And because each SPU can process vertex shading tasks hand-in-hand with the RSX graphics engine, the game can render more than the usual vertex shading programs to deliver that superb "WOW!" effect.

Demo was really great.
The videos of the retail version are awesome as well.

Also remember, graphics aren't everything.

So given the choice, I would choose lesser quality graphics for better quality gameplay. Seems to me the devs spent most of their time on the graphics. :|

F1GP3 on the PC didn't use a 3D graphics card, it was released when PC graphics were all created by the CPU, and yet the graphics looked VERY realistic in replays and it had a fantastic driving model (unlike F1 for the PS3), making it one of the best F1 games ever released.

F1 cars are the superior driving machine.
They handle as well as you wish cars would in real life.
While a tuned track car may be able to take a turn going 35 MPH, a F1 could take the same turn at 50+.
They need to watch real life F1 racing and compare it to the game, side to side, the game will be nearly identical.
They went for extreme realism in this game, and if people cant accept that then they need a reality check.

Oh and of course realism when there is no rumble or feedback? we will see how the reviews feel about that in a sim.

That is the secret weapon of the PS3, the CELL IS a graphic card too. Awesome!
Other interesting tidbit:
"Even though the game doesn't delegate SPUs to specific tasks, each SPU is called on to do jobs in a priority basis."
This is another way to use the SPUs. On the other hand, Insomniac says that they are delegating different task to each SPU in RFoM. Its interesting to see which one will get most of the gear.

There are other F1 games that achieve FAR GREATER driving simulation than this game, including the old F1 game for the PC.
You guys are just blinded by the graphics, but as the review scores come in, you'll eventually realize that this game is just not very good.
Shame so many choose 'graphics over gameplay' when it's on their favourite console, but rightfully attack 'graphics over gameplay' when it's on another console.

Typical fanboy denial.

The demo is amazing in both the graphics and realism department.

Xenon in the 360 can also be used for shader operations via the use of the GPU's memexport feature (which also provides an efficient method to use the GPU for other tasks such as physics). This doesn't make Xenon a graphics card too.
Also, before the arrival of 3D graphics cards on the PC, ALL the graphics were created with the main CPU. Even today, I can run games like UT2004 in software mode only, where all the graphics are being created by my PC's CPU and not the GPU. Again, that doesn't make the CPU a GPU, even though it's performing GPU type operations.

Gears of War delivered awesome gameplay as well, that's why the reviews are so high from almost EVERY website. On gamerankings, out of 113 worldwide reviews, the lowest score was 80% in just FIVE reviews, and the highest was 100% for 28 reviews. The average score is 94%.
That says it all!

If GOW was graphics over gameplay, then the average review scores would be much lower than 94%. FACT!
So going back to the point, I didn't say PS3 FANS were blinded by graphics. I said the guys HERE who responded to my post are blinded by graphics, since the review so far says the game is not very good.
Fair enough it's just one review so far, but as others come in, and if they also agree that the game is average/poor, are you still going to deny that those saying this game is great are not blinded by the graphics?

What, you mean like PS3 fanboys on the 360 boards!!!
I hate fanboys too, but they are part of EVERY forum. They always have been, and always will.
So I really don't see the point of your post, because it doesn't say anything we don't already know and it will achieve nothing (even though your point is valid). :|

Agreed
"The rain looks amazing, ill give it that."
Agreed, best racing rain effects I've seen so far.
"But other than that, the textures they used could have been done on the ps2."
Come on, you know that's not true. :)

LOL! Nice one! :)

It explains somewhere on the 1 page of why it doesn't do so well also I'm not sure if they mention why the score is so horrible cause frankly, I'm to lazy to look for it.
IF this was already posted I'm sorry.
