F1 Championship Edition: living, breathing example of the PS3's power

race to perfection - Image 1 The critically-acclaimed Formula One racing sim, Formula One Championship Edition for the PS3, exhibited a glaring example of the huge power the Playstation 3 houses inside. The racing sim dares to push the envelope past virtual visuals and sits right next to realism.

N'Gai Croal of Newsweek had a few questions for SCE Studio Liverpool's Game Director Graeme Ankers about the game and just how sexy it looks on the PS3.

From the interview, Ankers pointed out that the game was specifically built to put the title into a worthy next-generation level. So everything from damage modeling, high-definition rendering and life-like AI to the captivating simulation gameplay and every bit of detail was under scrutiny. If anything just didn't look real enough, they put it back to the drawing board until it comes out exceeding expectations or just right.

"One of the key challenges you face when developing a game for Playstation 3 is making sure everything in the game consistently hits the high benchmarks you've set yourself," Ankers explained.

The game allows the player to race against 21 other cars in a single track. A single car on the track uses as much memory as 22 cars would use for the PS2 version. Everything they had estimated came close enough that difficulties in realizing the next-generation level of detail for the game were minimal. And the weather effects... whew! Are they a sight to look at or what?

Ankers explained that the game models realistic rain. And it's not done on a looped way like other games have done before. The rain is simulated per droplet, meaning each drop can have a different impact effect, splash direction and splash area on the car, your helmet view and on moving parts like tires.

Cars veering off course or navigating turns will actually show how water sprays off the wheels from the wet track or from the rain. The game models each droplet by using the PS3's unique CELL architecture.

Even though the game doesn't delegate SPUs to specific tasks, each SPU is called on to do jobs in a priority basis. And because each SPU can process vertex shading tasks hand-in-hand with the RSX graphics engine, the game can render more than the usual vertex shading programs to deliver that superb "WOW!" effect.

This is marketing PR, hold off for the game.

Also remember, graphics aren't everything.

hmm... what no pgr cars on the advertisement? thats strange. dont get to exitided. even though i am a fan of the 360 i admit the ps3 just might have more power.... that being said. racing games will always be graphically superior to other genres.

# And yet this game scored only 4/10 in EDGE!Guest 2007-02-13 19:56
Yep, EDGE magazine said this game is great graphics over poor gameplay. So don't be surprised if we see similar scores elsewhere, perhaps not as low because of the graphics, but just the same, not great (some of the podcasts I've listened too expressed concerns over the driving model, saying it's too twitchy and arcadey).

So given the choice, I would choose lesser quality graphics for better quality gameplay. Seems to me the devs spent most of their time on the graphics. :|

Racing games do tend to be graphically superior because of the nature of the game, even going back to racing games in the 90s on the PC and Playstation (F1 Grand Prix series and Gran Turismo series).

F1GP3 on the PC didn't use a 3D graphics card, it was released when PC graphics were all created by the CPU, and yet the graphics looked VERY realistic in replays and it had a fantastic driving model (unlike F1 for the PS3), making it one of the best F1 games ever released.

Thats pretty much like every F1 racer.

F1 cars are the superior driving machine.

They handle as well as you wish cars would in real life.

While a tuned track car may be able to take a turn going 35 MPH, a F1 could take the same turn at 50+.

They need to watch real life F1 racing and compare it to the game, side to side, the game will be nearly identical.

They went for extreme realism in this game, and if people cant accept that then they need a reality check.

Isnt this just what the game director said ? its not an independent magazine review is it ?, lets wait and see it might be pants.

Oh and of course realism when there is no rumble or feedback? we will see how the reviews feel about that in a sim.

I dont know if this thing is fun because I havent played it yet but this phrase was the most important for me:

"And because each SPU can process vertex shading tasks hand-in-hand with the RSX graphics engine, the game can render more than the usual vertex shading programs to deliver that superb "WOW!" effect."

That is the secret weapon of the PS3, the CELL IS a graphic card too. Awesome!

Other interesting tidbit:

"Even though the game doesn't delegate SPUs to specific tasks, each SPU is called on to do jobs in a priority basis."

This is another way to use the SPUs. On the other hand, Insomniac says that they are delegating different task to each SPU in RFoM. Its interesting to see which one will get most of the gear.

# I just ignore anything but retail reviewsGuest 2007-02-14 02:34
I dont find the comments of any companys own games of the slightest interest, I wait for the REAL independent reviews by game mags etc when the game is in front of them in its sealed RETAIL BOX anything else is just rumour/bull/cack/self advertising etc etc etc...

"They went for extreme realism in this game, and if people cant accept that then they need a reality check."

There are other F1 games that achieve FAR GREATER driving simulation than this game, including the old F1 game for the PC.

You guys are just blinded by the graphics, but as the review scores come in, you'll eventually realize that this game is just not very good.

Shame so many choose 'graphics over gameplay' when it's on their favourite console, but rightfully attack 'graphics over gameplay' when it's on another console. :P

Xenon in the 360 can also be used for shader operations via the use of the GPU's memexport feature (which also provides an efficient method to use the GPU for other tasks such as physics). This doesn't make Xenon a graphics card too.

Also, before the arrival of 3D graphics cards on the PC, ALL the graphics were created with the main CPU. Even today, I can run games like UT2004 in software mode only, where all the graphics are being created by my PC's CPU and not the GPU. Again, that doesn't make the CPU a GPU, even though it's performing GPU type operations.

Blinded by graphics? What exactly did Gears do beside deliver awesome graphics? What exactly did lost planet do other than deliver awesome graphics? Please tell, as i don't understand how PS3 fans are blinded by graphics.

"Blinded by graphics? What exactly did Gears do beside deliver awesome graphics?"

Gears of War delivered awesome gameplay as well, that's why the reviews are so high from almost EVERY website. On gamerankings, out of 113 worldwide reviews, the lowest score was 80% in just FIVE reviews, and the highest was 100% for 28 reviews. The average score is 94%.

That says it all!

http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/928234.asp

If GOW was graphics over gameplay, then the average review scores would be much lower than 94%. FACT!

So going back to the point, I didn't say PS3 FANS were blinded by graphics. I said the guys HERE who responded to my post are blinded by graphics, since the review so far says the game is not very good.

Fair enough it's just one review so far, but as others come in, and if they also agree that the game is average/poor, are you still going to deny that those saying this game is great are not blinded by the graphics?

Why do you guys even read these post. Just so you can talk s**t about the PS3. Are you that unhappy with the purchase of your 360 that you have to bash the PS3 every chance you get or was it that you couldn't afford the PS3 and you had to settle for the 360. I own both and I like them both, but I prefer the PS3. I don't talk trash about the 360 or Wii, even though theres plenty to say. Each console has their strengths and weaknesses. If the game is bad ass but you don't own the console the game is made for, don't go talking trash about it just deal with it. Grow up.

"That is the secret weapon of the PS3, the CELL IS a graphic card too. Awesome!" To funny..... I mean seriously, do people that make these coments even do there own research. The cell was designed to handle everything, but they counldnt make it work to there expectations. So they slapped in RSX at the last minute. And hence the basdardised memory arcitecture. And who ever thinks this is a sim, needs to get out more. Its arcadish at best. The rain looks amazing, ill give it that. But other than that, the textures they used could have been done on the ps2.

What, you mean like PS3 fanboys on the 360 boards!!!

I hate fanboys too, but they are part of EVERY forum. They always have been, and always will.

So I really don't see the point of your post, because it doesn't say anything we don't already know and it will achieve nothing (even though your point is valid). :|

you idiots really do not have a shadow of a clue about the ps3 and its true power don't you find it sort of embarassing that the weak60 is already maxed out after only a year yes it has i really honestly feel so sorry for you wanna be tech specialists you dont understand the hardware design of the ps3 in any way but you keep using your last gen knowledge to try to decipher a truely next gen system you minds are only subpar at most you have no idea what your talking about first of weak60 is nowhere near the ps3 in any way wanna know why because the ps3 is a supercomputer and do you wanna know what supercomputers do they are the machines behind these movies such as the incredibles, madagascar, toy story, final fantasy, cars and even those movies that will have those computer generated dragons, and creatures that dont really exist but look incredibly close to real they also render movies such as the day after tomorrow i know your minds are to weak just as weak as weak180 in comparison to the sheer unparalleled magnitude of the sony playstation 3 super computer and i know even after this post of the truth someone else will try to come up with their lame explanation of why your little miniscule minds believe that the weak180 is even at the shadow of the bondary of the sony ps3 and its true power many of you are saying that the ps3 had shown some fake trailers at e3 05 yes you may be right but then again maybe not those games shown were tech demoes done to the ps3 spec and wonna know one more bumber the graphic chip wasn't even complete at the time of e3 05 and one more bumber even with the incomplete system they were only harnessing 70% of the ps3's power that is extremely scary considering no one will ever use 100% of the ps3's power thats if there is a 100% now many of you poor idiots are so bent on just judging these launch titles as oppossed to the full power of the system you idiots dont even understand that whereas the weak180 is very very close to its limit if not exceeded its limit ps3 is doing its warm-up excercise ill show you idiots just how foolish you are why do you think that microsoft released gears of war right around the time of the ps3 launch gate ill tell you why gears of war was microsofts graphical trump card oh its very much common sense micrfosoft planned this release for a long while they knew the game exceeded what the weak60 was capable of but they knew the ps3 is 2X + powerful as the weak180 and they were doomed if they didnt try to battle the ps3's starting graphics with there best graphics you see microsoft is sort of smart and sort of stupid kinda like you people they released the game at the launch of the ps3 because they knew developers werent going to be able to make that level of graphics at the launch of the ps3 so that was microsofts opportunity to release this gears of war but you boys didnt notice that im no tech but yet i figured that out reason 2 why bill gates even stated,"this game is what the system is built for" in other words thats all the system is able to withstand you know the weak180 may be able to match the ps3 if you had 2 weak180's + something else and here is another scary fact sony said the finalized ps3 hardware was more powerful than expected another bummer guerilla games confirmed killzone 2 is already in developement and some elements already exceed the trailer and you that say that the weak60's current games look better than on the ps3 your far from correct because develpopes say that every game done for the ps3 is only possible on the ps3 because its a supercomputer developers could easily at this point and time stop what they are doing with the ps3 just trying to get the physic power out of the system not so much as to scratch the graphic power im so tired of you idiots saying that the graphic processor in the weak180 being superior to the ps3's your so far from right that im sorry for you you see the ps3's graphic chip had to be compatible supercomputer hardware in order for the system to be able to render the true photrealistic graphics that you will b
