Kill Zone 2 - Image 1

PlayStation 3 fanboys, I give you: redemption.

It's a well known fact that the PlayStation 3 is easily the most powerful console in the market today in terms of sheer hardware muscle. It's also a well known fact that no game in the PlayStation 3's repertoire has been able to take real advantage of this to really set itself apart from the competition.

On the contrary, many multiplatform games today find that their PS3 versions are the worst looking of the lot. (ex. Fallout 3). Small wonder that the 360 is kicking Sony butt in the financial markets.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel though. The upcoming PS3 exclusive, Killzone 2, has long been eyed as perhaps the first real test for the PlayStation 3's abilities as a next gen console. An expert on technical and gaming issues took careful scrutiny of the title and first impressions are very good. So good that he declared it the "Undisputed Winner" in terms of graphics.

He elaborated on the issue:

While the actual graphics themselves arenÂ’t really a generation beyond anything weÂ’ve seen recently in terms of geometry or textures, I think itÂ’s the handling of those visuals that makes it truly stand out.

He noted the full range and mix of visual techniques, from the motion blur, to the post-processing of the lighting, combine to create a brutal, visceral feel geared to a closer emulation of reality.

Credits were also extended to the audio, which dynamically changes in sensitivity and focus  according to the action (just as a real human ear). For example: If it's quiet, ambient noise gets louder. In the heat of pitched battle, however... well, there's understandably little else.

Although he noted that there was some slowdown in the frame rate when things got hectic (from 30fps to 20fps), it still was able to handle 32-player games "beautifully."

Killzone 2 runs at native 720p with 2x quincunx anti-aliasing. 1080i/p is also supported.

The game has looked absolutely stunning since the first gameplay footage surfaced.

That this game is as great as the graphics. I'm getting this game for sure. From what I've seen so far this game looks fantastic and could be the start of the real next gen console.

» what about

metal gear solid 4? MGS4 at 1080p was pretty darn amazing...

» the gameplay is equally awesome.

From my experiences at least. You've never played another game with the feel that KZ2 has. Everything feels brutally realistic; from jumping to climbing a ladder to grabbing ammo from a crate, the animations are stunning.

IMO, Gears of War 2 came somewhat close to KZ2, but no cigar.

» well after 4 years in the making by times it comes it...

» found the article, but...

...i dont think he says it's THE undisputed winner, he says it's "AN" undisputed winner. so the title is misleading.

reading it makes me REALLY excited for killzone2, but i believe he's saying graphically it has a distinctive look which is "quite unlike any other game", not better than any other game. but the handling of those graphics makes it come together in a way which overall is more polished than most other games.

still, i'm counting down the days for this game. :)

idk.. I'm one of the biggest Metal gear fanboys around, and I can clearly see that Killzone 2 has the graphics beat on that by a mile.

In the past when cod4 first came out people were saying it looking equally good or better than killzone 2, and I was just sitting there wondering how they came up with that. Sure lots of games may look great, but killzone is just better. After trying out this beta I feel like this is the FIRST next gen/current gen game to amaze me with its graphics. I don't know about everyone else but I expected a lot more (graphics wise) from this generation, at least up untill I tried out killzone 2.

» february 2009 guys :D

i must say mgs4 looks great so does resistance 2 and little big planet the only issue with the other games was probably due to the fact it was a port from xbox 360

we didnt see many issues with cod4 cuz they went the smart way and spent an equal amount of tiem on both consoles

An expert analyst seems to think otherwise...

"So good that he declared it the "Undisputed Winner" in terms of graphics."

by PS34ME - 2008-11-16 10:06
» please, both of you.

pissteeth, you're talking bs and you know it.

marcosatti1, read the link i provided where this all comes from. he said for graphics it was AN undisputed winner, meaning the graphics are fabulous and on par with everything else out there. he didn't compare it to other games and say its THE undisputed winner. jon g has twisted what was said by that 'expert'.
