Exclusion of Force Feedback on PS3 To Affect Immersion's Revenues

ImmersionPS3Even though Sony will still support the Rumble technology in its PS2, Immersion admits that should the technology be excluded once and for all from the PS3 controller, its revenues would definitely be affected.

Should this come to pass, apart from the loss of revenue from PS3-related sales, it would be safe to assume that other parties would feel less need to incorporate vibration controllers in their own consoles, potentially shrinking the market further.

The company, though, states that they still have a stable source of revenue with their growing business in automotive control, medical simulators and cell phone space.

Immersion and Sony are still trying to talk things over, though. If any progress will be made at all, then there's a big chance that Immersion's TouchSense can still be used in the PS3's controller. Any such action on Sony's part will also give gamers something more to look forward to when the PS3's finally released.

# I LIKE RUMBLEGuest 2006-06-19 18:09
I think rumble is an important part of the gaming experience. Playing FPS just doesnt feel right without some forcefeedback. Its just wrong. I hope they can include it in the PS3 because I dont think ppl are going to realize how big of a deal this is until they play without the rumble

# This is a MUST HAVE feature.Guest 2006-06-19 18:25
Sony has included it throughout it's reign of playstation products (excluding PS1 non-ds2 & psp). Playing games without rumble takes away the whole (pun unintended) 'immersion' of the player into the game. I love playing socom and feeling the heartbeat of the player in the control, letting you know when your beat calms down, your scope does as well. Rumble also lets you feel when you have been hit by a bullet. Rumble is essential to an adequate gaming experience, if sony doesn't settle the ***** down and accept immersion, I will be very dissapointed in them.

# Wont Lose sleepGuest 2006-06-19 18:38
I do agree that this is a great feature for all games but in all seriousness im not going to lose sleep if they dont include it... Im sure later on a 3rd party developer or Sony will include it in a later model... just initially it wont have it

# Vibration is good, but not everything...Guest 2006-06-19 18:44
To me, vibration has been the sesame seeds on the bun of a good hamburger. Is the hamburger not good when they are absent, no, its still great. But it is nice to have them, even though it isnt adding anything spectacular.

Some games benefit greatly from it, but with most games, i either dont notice it, or its kind of annoying. Fighting games for example, its an annoyance, i always turn it off, because it vibrates a bit too often. Other games on the other hand, use it so sparingly, it might as well not bother. Lik Ok has said before me, it would be nice if they manage to put it in (there is still time) but im not going to lose sleep over the matter if they dont.

I don't know I don't seem to mind missing the rumble in pc games and on some of my console games the rumble feature just seems to be annoying and doesnt really immerse me into the game. Eventually we will be seeing 3rd party and Sony made controllers later on in 2007 with both the tilt and the new rumble.

# rumble isnt everythingffaldkja 2006-06-19 20:28
people say rumble is a must have, others dont care cause they dont notice it. In the past the rumble feature was used to increase the feel of the game in a way that wasnt possible due to limitations in the visual and audible aspects of games. It wasnt until playing god of war that i realized that rumble was overrated. Yes it feels good to feel the recoil of your blows hiting hard into the flesh of monsters and the sharp jabs from getting hit... at first, then you dont notice it when your into the game. But what you do notice when your getting backed into a corner, health low, you almost have the boss strategy figured out? Not the rumble, it almost kicks at your fustration, the antisipation, the angst. You pause the game in the middle of battle where the minotaur just finished off a large attack giving you a second to get back in whenyou unpause. You notice something amiss.... an erie silence from your own body... your heart doesnt seem to be beating as fast with antisapation as you originally thought... you feel your chest, it beats quick but not as you thought, you unpause the game, your heart feels as if it quickens, the blood rushing so that its pounding in your ears, you react to slow to a swinging paw, the pounding beat of your heart quivers and stops. you leave a sigh or disgress and prepare to start the fight over again. Its then you realize that the feeling of your heart quickening, its rushing blood thumping in your ears was fabricated using low level sound frequencies that corolate directly to kratos's health. With this realization you no longer have to worry bout watching his health bar, you know your magical limits, rumble is non existant in midbattle. Kratos's heart echo's your own seemingly quickening as you struggle and weaken, beating faintly harder in your ear.

I know my descriptive narrative is rusty, probably to the point of lock-jaw, but i hope you get the idea. Rumble may not be nessicary anymore. Technology has brought forth more innovative ways to pull you into the game. Rumble pulls from the sense of feeling, its also one of the easier senses to block out. Do you feel the nail in your foot from the nail gun before you see it? Do you feel pain from a gunshot wound immediatly if you dont hear it, let alone see it? Howbout the constant 1ton pressure of air pressing against you from above? Feeling is a concious effort of interaction, Sight and hearing goes deeper into the stem of our brains.

Says that Sony and Immersion are talking about co-oping? Or is it just speculation. I would like to see that article, pretty please. :)

# Won buy ps3 if no rumble.........Guest 2006-06-19 21:41
I will not consider to buy PS3 if they really not going to implement rumble in the controller. Maybe move to Xbox 360. Very disappointed when sony came out with this idea.

# Rumble is just a part of gaming now...Guest 2006-06-20 00:12
The Rumble feature has been a HUGE part of console gaming since the dawn of the first rumble enabled game, Starfox 64(if my mind serves me correctly). So to say that it wouldn't have an impact on gaming is just insane. It adds a depth to games that couldnt be without it. This is why they have added the tilt feature, it adds depth to the game. Same concept. I agree that if Sony does not include rumble, after it has finalized talks with Immersion they will bring out a rumble feature in time to come.

#8: Wait, are you telling me you decided to not buy a PS3 and might get a 360 just because there is no rumble feature? Your kidding right? Deciding not to buy a console because of rumble. Why don't just say your were gonna buy a 360 anyway? Doesen't make sence.

#11: Again WTF! You lost all hope in a system because of Rumble feature isn't included. What other things made you loose hope, because it can't just be rumble feature, or this would be the stupidist thing I ever heard. Wow, just wow!

From the article, it appears Immersion will try to do whatever it can to get rumble include in the PS3, as that's one of it's source or revenue. And when Immersion is that desperate, Sony is bound to get a good deal out of it.

lol. Immersion should have thought of that before they *sued* Sony. it's kind of a ironic, i guess. they basically bit the hand that fed them. they had since the PS1 era to sue Sony, but they waited until the PS2 era, and when the Playstation brand was phenomenally successful, and had mainstream recognition, thus bringing recognition to Immersion, thus leading to more companies interested in their rumble technology (i imagine that massage machine manufacturers would be looking into various forms of that technology for thier appliances, and willing to pay Immersion a lot for the license to use it in their chairs, pillows, what have you). it strikes me as a very carefully planned attack to capitilize off of Sony's popularity for major publicity to Immersion. and they've already garnered instant sympathy from the masses that love to think of big corporations as the devil, crapping on the little guy, and taking what they can get from them for maximum profits. i'm not saying Sony is innocent of their violation, i'm just saying that it's suspect Immersion would sue after ten years of Sony using their product. you'd think the first time they saw a Dual Shock they'd be like, "Hey, that seems kind of familiar..."

anyway, by suing Sony, they burned a bridge that will not be easily built again, and it's led them to *less* profits than what they sued for. maybe if they had settled with Sony, they would have been more willing to license the rumble tech from them. it's kind of a prison of their own making. Sony will do just fine without the rumble, wheras, the rumble is *all* Immersion has. if other companies were to follows Sony's lead, they would be in trouble. sure Microsoft and Nintendo would have rumble, but if their consoles don't sell large numbers, it's kind of pointless to continue in the rumble business.
