Even more from Kojima on MGS4

Kojima - Image 1We've already informed you folks about several interesting excerpts from Hideo Kojima's interview over at GamePro magazine. Based on your comments it seems that you folks like that topic (doi it's MGS) so If you haven't read the whole interview yet, we'll give you guys a link to a transcript of the whole interview.

Of course, before we deliver to you guys of the main course, here's a few more appetizers from that in lengthy interview.

The excerpt below is on Kojima's thoughts on how the game is building up to a battle that could be described as World War III.

Kojima: Actually at first, yes. I kind of had that vision in mind. Because in the past Metal Gear series, it was just like battles popped up here and there. But this time, it's the last entry in the series, the finale. We thought that we needed to scale up the whole storyline, so of course World War III was the vision there. Snake cannot go into outer space, you know, to make the story scale bigger. However, my thinking was that warfare was not going in that direction, so the direction we took was Private Military Companies (PMCs) or people fighting for other countries. So it's not actually a World War III, but it is in that direction.

In the interview he also talks a bit about the OctoCamo suit, and how in the latest Metal Gear, Snake isn't necessarily 'the enemy.' You can still sneak around, and if you decide to attack a certain faction, say "Enemy Squad A", said squad will antagonize you more, and they get better at spotting and searching for you. Kojima even says that some units that you will encounter will turn out to be allies.

Kojima says that the OctoCamo suit isn't the central gimmick of the game. He emphasizes that it's just another option available to players, and that it is not an almighty item. He even hints that it's harder to use than when you're just hiding in shadows and corners. He says, "If you get spotted once, it'll be more obvious because you're not going to blend in." So just what tools other than the OctoCamo suit are in Snake's arsenal? We'll let Kojima explain:

GP: Will swords or other hand-to-hand combat weapons be a factor for Snake?
Kojima: Yes. And you'll be surprised by the number of weapons that he will use. And you can customize your weapons by putting attachments and upgrades on them.

GP: Would that include [attachments like] silencers and lights and laser sights?
Kojima: Yes. Grenade launchers, scopes.... We have a sort of geeky maniac of military weapons on our team. I can't keep up with him! For the game design, I don't do [intricate weapon design] -- I leave it up to those guys on the team to make attachments and so on.

Yeah, we know how you feel, Kojima. We have military geeks in  our office too. Military geeks can get a bit too overzealous sometimes. You just have to leave things to them and let them do stuff.

That's that, for the complete interview feel free to click on our read-link below, it should lead to a transcript of the GamePro Interview.

Wow...

If there's one thing that kojima knows, it's how to create a masterpiece.

He's done 3.. now the forth is almost certainly gonna be the best game of this generation...

The MGS games have always had a strong storyline and excellent gameplay... number 4... well, with PS3's hardware his vision is even larger and i absolutely can't wait for this title.

The Whole PSP-Connectivity and sixaxis involved in this title (unless canned) will no doubt give it a truely unique and realistic touch to it.

Can't Wait!

» Lets Hope

MGS4 will be a huge game for the PS3!!!!!!!!

People will buy a PS3 just to play this game.

I just hope that Kojima will take FULL use of the PS3s power and not let it be a PS2 game with enhanced graphics.

So far things are looking great for the MGS4 game, but as a por 15 year old kid who was barley able to get a PS3. I gonna have to see some actual ingame footage before i fork over 60 dollars for a MGS3 game with HD graphics.

If the game is full 1080p or 720p thats great, but lets hope the gameplay will still be a challenging , fun, and exciting game

To All the Fools Who Say Blu-ray Capacity is Not Needed...this Is for you.

http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=94011

"GP: Resistance: Fall of Man uses 22 GB [edit: recently changed to 16 GB] of Blu-ray storage. Is that necessary for next-gen development? Is that massive storage something you'll need to make MGS4?

Kojima: Right away. We'll need more.

GP: We recently spoke with Sony's Phil Harrison, who told us that he thinks PS3 games will soon use 50 GB. Do you agree with that prediction?

Kojima: Yes, I do. It's high-def, and just to make it high-def, the data requirements are huge.

Back in the days when I was working on 8-bit, 1 MB ROMs came out and I thought, "wow, great!" But it wasn't enough. When the CD-ROM came out, we thought we had so much space. But when we started to add sound, there was a lack of storage already. Even Blu-ray, I don't even feel that it expanded data so much. With cinematic, the space fills up right away. You may hear Blu-ray is huge, gigantic, 20 GB or so, but that's not really that big to us. One basic [gameplay] frame with HD and 5.1 takes up so much space that the capacity will become too small in no time. If we maintain the same level of graphics and sound as the PS2, then Blu-ray is spacious. But that's not the case.

GP: Is that intimidating for a developer to have to work with so much storage? Do you worry about being buried under a mountain of data?

Kojima: I don't care so much about the space. In the past, we spent so much time creating programs for compressing. But now, we don't have to do that so much. So in that sense, it's gotten a little easier."

There you Have it....Not Only Developers Need Blu-ray Capacity,Its Actually Not [Enough]...Kojima Clearly Said Blu-ray Doesnt Offer Much More space than DVD,and they Will Use all the storage Right away..

Also..this is Important on Exclusivity...

"Frankly speaking, I want to create something on the PC. It's a multi-platform [format]. I've been regularly studying work on the PC anyways, and I want to provide something as a world-wide platform because of the consequences with timing on the PlayStation platforms, MGS4 is actually for the PS3 only so far."

FOR-PS3-ONLY....and He want to male games for....PC..??

Dont do it Kojima.....PC gaming is Expensive, and is not Stable,Stick to the PS3 ;)

by Snowspot.net - 2007-01-20 23:21
» err

I'm confused. That interview must mean FMV's...It actually sounds like an interview to mislead people into thinking Blu-ray discs are necessary. HD is just a resolution... I don't understand how that translates to 50 gb games, when gears of war is on one DVD.

» anything MGS...

MGS + ratings

piracy is becoming common, you have been informed!

by Devise - 2007-01-21 01:00
» Yeah I know, roll eyes at 45GB of FMV

Gears Of War used it's engine to render the cut scenes so the game is only 6GB. But MGS is going to be full of 720p and 1080p FMVs to fill the disc up. Because the PS3 doesn't upscale he's probably going to include a 720 and 1080 copy of each FMV so people can experience the highest possible res their TV takes. Wouldn't want to be watching those 1080p FMV on a 720p TV at 480p now would you? The 360 just upscales everything up to 1080p.

by Robd - 2007-01-21 02:48
» I understand now

So you are saying that the lack of scaling in the PS3 is why they need so much storage space? Now it all makes sense.

by Spooks - 2007-01-21 02:54
» Yep...

... imagine a game size of MGS4 on the 360. How many DVD's would you need? Surely more than four.

by thedirector - 2007-01-21 03:59
» cell chip

well, its not completly true about ps3 not able to upscale, the problem is the cell chip will do this, but developers know how to use a normal render engine, like 360, but they are still getting to grips with using the cell, it renders in a new way, and render engines are very common so its second nature to most developers, i got this info form a interview, but i find the inteview, i will post link, i think it was on Devil may cry 4 in famitsu.

Yes I would also like BROKEN_HERO to tell us WHY GEARS OF WAR HAS BETTER - GAMEPLAY GRAPHICS AND SOUND than Resistance if the 360 is so restricted by the dvd as he claims?.

by ILuvGames - 2007-01-21 06:14
» Exactly.

Some gamers act as if the quality of a game is determined by it's size on disk, which is just stupid beyond belief.

Which ever way you look at it, whether it's from the reviews, from comments on fourms, from sales figures, from online popularity etc, Gears of War is a better game than Resistance, despite taking up less disk space.

To cover another point I notice here - It's true that some gamers (usually fanboys) have said Blu-ray isn't needed, but it's also true that equally stupid gamers (again usually fanboys) have said that DVD is not enough. Neither is perfect, and both are fine for next-gen games, and each have good points and bad points, but as usual, fanboys only see the bad points.

by Vietone - 2007-01-21 07:09
» no

A 1080p video is enough, Since the PS3 can downscale to 720 or 480.

Also Sound takes up alot of space, more then you can imagine.

For example, take an audio CD, the audio on a CD is by far better then any MP3. But people use Mp3 to save space but the quality will never be CD audio because every time you convert, you always lose quality even if you cant hear it.

ON a 700MD cd, you get 80 minutes. with MP3 at 192kbps which is close to cd audio quality, you can fit alot more then 80 minutes worth.

Same is here, they are using 5.1 uncompressed lossless audio. CD Audio is 2 channels. 5.1 is 6 channels. Therefore lossless sound in 6 channels takes up alot of sound.

by Vietone - 2007-01-21 07:19
» Ill explain

Take GoW vs RFoM

RFoM not only has more maps, but they are bigger.

RFoM has lossless audio in 5.1 whole GoW is compressed 5.1

Sound quality in RFoM is far superior to GoW. I played GoW with 5.1 sound and it doesnt even come close to the clarity of RFoM when using HDMI for lossless audio. The comparison isnt even close.

Saying GoW is a better game is an opinion. The single player in RFoM to me and alot of other people is far superior to GoW. GoW is the same thing every map and the boss battles, if you can even call it that, are easy since everything is scripted to the point that you can completely anticipate what every enemy, including bosses will do.

I beat the game a couple times and died a few times each run. RFoM has a much harder game, had AI that more dynamic and more realistic. How often will you find yourself in a position to get close enough to an enemy in RFoM to melee them. While in GoW, almost every enemy in the game can chainsawed without breaking a sweat.

Some of you dont see the difference that sound quality an make. when comparing 6 channel compressed audio vs 6 channel lossless audio, its several times bigger when your using lossless audio and it sounds much cleaner. goW never sounded good to me in the first place since I play most of my games on a PC, but games on the PS3 like RFoM sounds so much cleaner with the same speakers I use for my Xbox360 thats its pretty much night and day.

» Blu-ray Vs DvD

GoW : £60 at launch i payed.

Finished the game the day i got it in about 12 hours on medium difficulty.

£60 for 12 hours of a decent game is a rip off in my eyes. Which is why i will not be buying halo 3 just to finish it within 10 hours. Xbox need to make longer games not just good ones. This is the reason i have sold the xbox and waiting for the ps3 launch.

by GaMeS69 - 2007-01-21 09:22
» Eh?

"I beat the game a couple times and died a few times each run"

Since when did you play and beat GOW. You've had nothing good to say about the 360 and this game since the beginning. Now you're claiming you've played it to the end, and not just once but a number of times!!!

No really, show me the thread where you've described playing GOW before. :|

by GaMeS69 - 2007-01-21 09:33
» Really?

Then you should have played it on a harder setting, and since when is 12 hours not value for money? Resistance is estimated at 12-15 hours, so how is that suddenly great value for money but GOW isn't? Especially given that GOW is to MOST gamers a better game.

And you think Halo 3 will be 10 hours? You think all 360 games will be 10 hours? How long is Oblivion BTW?

Look, if you really did have a 360 (we only have your word for it) and decided to sell it for a PS3, the fine I respect your choice in the matter. But please, don't go making up stupid reasons as to why you did so.

by GaMeS69 - 2007-01-21 09:51
» Well yes, audio is great

"but games on the PS3 like RFoM sounds so much cleaner with the same speakers I use for my Xbox360 thats its pretty much night and day."

From my understanding, Resistance is the only PS3 game making use of PCM audio, and no other games that I know of will be making use of it either (although I'm sure there's a few).

It does sound better, but it's not on the list of must have features for gamers. So with the vast majority of PS3 games not using PCM audio, I wouldn't be so keen to make out it's such a BIG thing. Great when it's there for a gamer who has the setup to appreciate it, but for the majorty of gamers, who cares! :|

But going back to the 360, when did you buy it and why do you still own one when you never have anything good to say about it?

» Money vs Gameplay

£60 for 12 hours play is a massive rip off. I would be upset at paying £40 for 12 hours play. Games nowadays need at least 20+ hours gameplay. Or like the GTA series lots of replay modes.

by comedy - 2007-01-21 12:31
» ok chaps. let's get some things straight...

firstly, the mgs series doesn't use fmv's as simple video files, it uses the game engine (as someone described GoW does - although i've never played it). this is why mgs3 has like 6 hours of video on, but is on one 4.5Gig dvd. simple.

so mgs 4 will have a large single player game

it will be in 1080p, which will take up some space

it will have uncompressed audio (a luxury rather than prerequisite)

it will most likely have a large enough multiplayer game

now, i know GoW pretty much does all this very well and is squeezed onto a dvd9 but doesn't that simply tell you that the guys at epic are very clever? i'm sure if kojima was limited to dvd9's as well he could do it but at the expense of content or fidelity.

when a video comes in 1080p format and you have a 720p tv it won't break it, it will be downscaled by your tv or by the system.

vietone has had as much negative stuff to say about ps3 as he has about 360. i find myself disagreeing with him regularly, but most of the time it's either opinion or things i can't disprove - this means i don't think he's a liar.

perhaps he has a 360 and GoW, is that so hard to believe?

i can't afford any next gen system right now but i'm keeping a watchful eye on the situation and i know that GoW is a top-notch game, still i am not swayed into getting a 360 simply due to the nature of the game. also, although it seems quite shiny and good enough i am not about to go buy a ps3 for Rfom - i play my fps's on my pc.

also, hideo kojima is not one to downplay anything; he loves sensationalism, just play mgs and you'll see that, but even more so he has always talked big about stuff... so when he says 'we need even more than blu-ray' try to take it with a pinch of salt.

in the end it's exclusives which will sell systems, while 360 has GoW (new ip, quite refreshing) and Halo3 (console fps, not my scene) and others... the ps3 has Rfom (meh) Mgs4 (i am v exited by this game) and ff13 etc.

who wins? you decide...

by comedy - 2007-01-21 12:37
» actually

given mgs4 and ff13 are so far away shouldn't we all simply be hoping to own BOTH a 360 and a ps3? that way we get to play all these kick-ass titles.

look at how much fun you can have on a saturday, and how much it costs:

travel to football: 5

football ticket: 25

'food' and 'drink' at football: 5-10

go to pub and eat/drink: 20-30... even 40 or 50 quid

Until proven otherwise there is not one game to say the PS3 and its Blu Ray drive are better than a 360 with dvd or hd-dvd so stop ignoring the facts that dual release games to date have been better and smoother FOR WHATEVER REASON on the 360 so until these NEW ! or updated titles come out keep it to the facts and dont forget a developer is never gonna talk his game down now is he.

And even if a game is on 5 disks who would really care about changing disks maybe once every few days after all surly even on the PS3 you have to get up and change games just as often or then again you may not know that yet as the game ratio to hardware I believe is quite low so maybe not a lot of game disk changing going on at the moment.

you ask why gears of war looks and and is a better game than resistance well of course you idiot resistance is a launch game you novice gears of war is been in developement for well over 2 years maybe 3 and for how long as its been in developement it outta look a whole lot better than that but i guess not since it maxed out the system as a matter a fact it exceeded the systems limit thats why the game is so short and has so many glitches now the scary thing is when insomniac games makes the next resistance wheras there will be no gears of war 2 because there will be no change in graphics from the first we'll see which game is better and not to mention killzone which will trump the trailer glitches of war will look like macy gray compared to hally berry no this please love you.
