Tiga, the national trade association representing game developers in the UK and Europe, recently sent out a press release stating that the success of Grand Theft Auto 4 (PS3, Xbox 360) showed off the prowess of the UK games development sector, adding that such success was proof that the Government should over tax credits to developers.
In the press release, Tiga CEO Richard Wilson cited the strong sales of the game and praise from critics as "indicative of the strength of the UK games development sector." He continues,
Our games industry is the largest in Europe and we are the fourth largest developer of games in the world. The UK games industry is also characterised by strong regional clusters. Scotland has a particularly creative set of games businesses. GTA IVÂ’s triumph is a success for Scotland in particular.
Wilson then iterated that such critical success should be proof of the need for tax credits for game developers:
From a wider policy perspective, if we are to improve on the games industryÂ’s record of success, then the Government must create a more favourable tax regime for games developers and tackle the underlying skills shortages facing the games development industry. This approach will enhance the UKÂ’s capacity for creating more video game block-busters.
Tiga's called for such moves previously, though they've yet to bear fruit. Will the strength of one additional game be enough to change the minds of the folks in government? We'll just have to wait and see.
