European PS3 backwards-compatible... with Eragon only?

With the PS3 finally landing in European soil by March 23, 2007, things are still not quite all and well for this console, even at this late a stage. As the story goes, there have been many issues regarding the European PS3's lack of an Emotion Engine which basically allows PS2 games to be played on Sony's new console. However, we have all been assured that despite this deficiency in hardware, the missing feature will be made up for via software emulation, and will instead rely on a combination of hardware and software.

Still on the topic of the PAL PS3's missing Emotion Engine, the latest statement that Sony has made about the matter was that the PAL version of the console will instead "be equipped with a different chip that processes graphics for PS2 games, but the backward compatibility of the machine will be lessened."

Shadow of the Colossus... no more? - Image 1Well, to put that to the test, the German site Cynamite managed to acquire a PAL PS3, so they decided to test its backwards-compatibility with 12 popular PS2 games (that is, 12 PS2 games you'd want to be stuck on an island with - according to Cynamite anyway). The titles that they decided to use were:
The end result? Out of the 12 titles, only Eragon worked. All other titles refused to start up and instead referred them to "future software updates and the Sony Website to read the downward compatibility list."

Oh well. So much for that. Well, here's to hoping that the guys at Sony hurry up with those firmware updates that they promised, so that European PS3 owners can play ye good olde Viewtiful Joe, already. And Castlevania Lament of Innocence. And the Prince of Persia trilogy. And Final Fantasy XII. And Space Channel 5.

» lets keep up with the other sites guys

this stuff was already debunked by Sony. The firmware updates enabling backward compat isn't coming out until release.

» c'mon

the early units are still using 1.5 and not 1.6

» Research more next time

As stated this is using outdated firmware. 1.6 is already claiming over 1200 titles.

» GAME UK

i just got a email from GAME UK about my ps3 order for 23rd of march and saying they have my ps3 there and are wating to despatch it so the ps3 they have is probably the same as what us pal will get on launch day, this sucks only 1 game worked well i don't care really because i don't have any ps2 games anymore as my brother has them all

» no need to worry

Even if your consoled is not up to date, the firmware update should be out by the time you get it. You just have to download and install it. Now, if you do not have an internet connection, that is an entirely different story. But I will assume you will be fine.

» Cynamite

I guess most of you don't know Cynamite, but it is a well known fact that they would write absolutely anything for money. I suppose it's just more bashing against Sony. So, you shouldn't believe only their so called "tests".

» ...

This test was conducted on a PS3 running an older version of the firmware.

Sony has yet to release the new f/w to enable these PS2 games, but that should happen around the launch date.

IF the problem is the PAL PS3 didn't come with the BC supporting firmware, what excuse does sony have for not installing it in the first place with all the delays?

If you think the backward compatibility will be ever even close to what it was with the emotion engine, you're horribly wrong. How many games were announced to work? 1,000? out of what 5,000 PS2 games? 1 out of 5 is horrible.

you are so right 1000 out of 5000 is terrible..... ok so 360(which i own) 200 at most compared to 3000 or so games?(estimated numbers not sure) but still the ps3 will have a abckwords compatbility which will end up supporting all "fun/ good rated games"

» Thats not the issue

Firmware fixes for BC on the US/Japan PS3 models with the Emotion Engine chip are not going to help those in Europe. The Europeon PS3s haven't got the PS2 processor, therefore BC problems will need to be addressed differently to the US/Japan PS3s.

» stop making such a big fuss

...and do you have 5000 games? chances are the 1000 games they have will include most of the important games that people will want to play.

qj stop posting this stuff. Heresay just to make more people mad? How many customers in the UK might actually not buy a PS3 because of the BS you have reported??

Obviously they won't release the FW. Any announcements about game compatibility will be up to sony, releasing that website on launch day. And yeah, all the good games you want to play will play.

There are 1000 out of 8000 ps2 games at launch, and they are working on more. Think about how many games you really don't need to play? How many editions of MLB and NFL and college whatever do you actually want to play? There are thousands of games like that, where the newer game is better, so why play the old one.

Can we get whoever's in charge of pspupdates to overlook ps3.qj? Every time I look here, there's older and older information that is normally rumors and completely unworthy of being on the site. Get on the ball guys.

As others have already said, the problem w/ this is that the tests were ran on a FIRMWARE NOT UTILIZING NEW BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY EMULATION!!! A real test can't be done until the proper firmware is matched w/ the system since it lacks the hardware.

» whoa crazy people, look at it this way:

just think if someone in europe gets his/her ps3 and they are shipping without 1.6 on, he'll boot up his fave ps2 game and it won't work! = gosh!

if that person didn't know that sony plan to do a firmware update thing on the release then he/she may not bother to check online, may not be able to, or may not even think of it... then he/she would be all dissatisfied. BUT NOW! now qj and countless other sites have shown this:

with current firmware pal ps3's can't emulate jack, but don't worry as the next firmware is out on release and that will fix the problem.

that could be useful info right?

» I'm lucky

i just did not get my PS3 i have 50 games and I would have been very dissapointed and pissed off if I couldnt play those 50 games on my PS3 but anyway i guess its not Sony's fault!
