European PS3 backward compatibility status site up now - Image 1

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) Senior Director of Communications Dave Karraker, alongside other top Sony executives, promised that a list of backward compatibility titles for Europe will be released through a dedicated website on or before the PlayStation 3 (PS3) launches in Europe this March 23.

You may be delighted to know that this site is already up and running now. A couple of days ago, most of you got a bit pissed when we shared with you a report saying that, after running a series of test,  the European version of the system is only compatible with Eragon. While that wasn't the official list, it was quite unsettling to say the least.

Anyway, we checked the official compatibility site and as it turned out, there's actually a sufficient-enough library of video games for PlayStation 2 (PS2) and PlayStation 1 (PSOne) owners alike to enjoy. The games can be viewed according to countries, making it easy for fans to browse the site. The Eragon-test was ran on a German PS3 and it is worth saying that the said site doesn't have a Germany-dedicated page.

If you want to get a headstart and make a checklist of PS2 titles that you can play on your new system, the Read link below should take you to the European PS3 backwards compatibility status site. A similar site, as you all know, is available as well for North American players.

» Soccer games?

Gargh, both FIFA and Pro Evo have major problems. Dammit, how will I play my armchair soccer (or football if you prefer) now? Hope they fix this soon, or at least get a PS3 soccer game out.

BTW, this is from the Australia list, didn't bother checking the other ones, but I assume they're the same.

» A Typical Occasional Gamers Compatibility List

I've had a Pre-Order for the Euro PS3 for ages, so I thought I'd do a quick check to see how my games library, of 19, stacks up on the Euro PS3:-

0 stars - Don't Work:-

================

1) EyeToy: Monkey Mania

2) Gran Turismo 4

3) Guitar Hero II

4) Metal Gear Solid 2

5) Ratchet & Clank

6) SSX

7) Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner

1 star - Should work with noticeable issues

===============================

1) Resident Evil 4

2) Zone of the Enders

2 starts - Should work with Minor issues

============================

1) Gran Turismo 3 A-spec

2) Worms 3D

3 stars - Works, No known issues to date

=============================

1) Dancing Stage Fusion

2) Dancing Stage Megamix

3) Devil May Cry

4) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

5) Rayman Revolution

6) Resident Evil - Code Veronica X

7) Ridge Racer V

Timesplitters

» A Typical Occasional Gamers Compatibility List - Not pleased

So what does this mean. Well 37% don't work at all, 42% work properly, leaving 21% somewhere in between.

Also for the working games I'd only still play Resi X, Vice City + GT3 (with its minor glitches).

But I'm p*ssed about Guitar Hero, GT4, Metal Gear 2 + Zone of Enders 2. Resi 4 (1 star... eek).

Better than nothing I suppose but "I expect" sony to fix this. Maybe MS can get away with dumping its old console, but its MS's approach to things like this which is why I bought Sony.

This sort of compatibility is a joke, especially when compared to Sonys original E3 announcment. They should have left the hardware in until the software worked, and done it with a price cut. Not now when your paying loads more than the US and Japan.

The whole thing reminds me of the planned HDMI port being excluded on the 20Gb PS3, right after they'd been braging about it at E3.. At least they changed there mind on that one.

» Euro 1.70 update

Thought I'd post an update, following on from the 1.70 euro PS3 firmware. To be honest I'm amazed at how much better the BC is now. It auto detects my USB adapter for the PS2 controller, rumble works. And all but two of my games now work!!

Only these two won't load:-

1) Metal Gear Solid 2

2) Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner

With all these previously dead titles now loading:-

1) Gran Turismo 4

2) Guitar Hero II

3) Ratchet & Clank

4) SSX

These ones all still work, though possibly with less glitches now:-

1) Buzz - The Music Quiz

2) Buzz - The Big Quiz

1) Dancing Stage Fusion

2) Dancing Stage Megamix

3) Devil May Cry

4) Gran Turismo 3 A-spec

5) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

6) Rayman Revolution

7) Resident Evil - Code Veronica X

Resident Evil 4

9) Ridge Racer V

10) Timesplitters

11) Zone of the Enders

I have a few issues that I was wondering if anyone else has. My USB GT Steering wheel works with GTHD, but isn't detected in GT3 or was it GT4 with the PS2 emulation.

Also the on the Guitar Hero 2 controller it looks like some of the coloured buttons are mixed up with Green and Red not working at all. Could this be because I got the adapter from Japan, or is there a general problem?
