SCEE announced PlayStation Eye - Image 1We know you've been waiting for this, so we won't mince words. Here's the big announcement from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) that dropped earlier today: the PlayStation Eye camera will finally be available all across Europe this coming Summer.

SCEE President David Reeves is quite proud of the new accessory. He mentioned that PlayStation Eye is little like the PlayStation 2's (PS2) EyeToy. He added,

PlayStation Eye has four times the resolution, twice the frame rate and double the sensitivity of its predecessor EyeToy USB Camera. With the technology that we now have at our disposal we will be able to dramatically improve the communications experience enjoyed on PS3.

The camera itself is capable of shooting frame rates of up to 120 frames per second that allows smooth video and advanced low-light operation. This means that the room where you are playing doesn't have to be well-lit to produce quality video output. PlayStation Eye's key features and technical specifications include:

Key Features:
  • A sophisticated microphone with the ability to reduce background noise and focus on the spoken word for smoother, more accurate speech recognition and transfer
  • The ability to capture videos and audio clips directly to your PS3's hard disk drive
  • Engineered to perform well even in low-light conditions
  • A range of different capturing modes, including slow motion and time-lapse
  • Faster frame rate for improved tracking, responsiveness and smoothness
  • Two position zoom lens for close-up and full body options
  • A range of eye-catching visual effects to apply to photos and videos
  • Bundled with EyeCreate editing software, which allows users to save and edit photos, video and audio clips
Technical Specifications:
  • 4 channel audio input:16 bits/channel, 48kHz, SNR 90db
  • 56º to 75º Field of View zoom lens
  • 2.1 F-stop, <1% distortion, fixed focus (25cm to 8 at 75º FOV)
  • 640 x 480 at 60 frames/second
  • 320 x 240 at 120 frames/second
  • USB2 high-speed data transfer
  • Uncompressed video or optional JPEG compression

LOL - fugly

looks topheavy :) anyway, very sweet looking feature list. 4 channel audio input through a microphone is pretty sweet technology. it also further hints at a future firmware update to allow for recording video and taking pictures, along with photo options and stuff...hopefully it will support the original eyetoy as well. (because i doubt i'll have the cash to dish out on this) i too am wondering about north america.

Woah, 60fps Videos on 640x480, and even 120fps vids on 320x240!! That's ALOT, and it DOES make a HUGE difference

by - 2007-04-26 10:23:51

by - 2007-04-26 10:31:36

by - 2007-04-26 10:50:30
HD eyetoy

i think they figured an HD eyetoy would not provide smooth video chat over the PSN.

by - 2007-04-26 10:57:47
reason:

Crystal ball. that's how he knows.

by - 2007-04-26 12:03:15
wireless??

i thougth the PS3 eye will be using bluetooth or WiFi USB 2.0 is prety old for "next gen".

by - 2007-04-26 12:50:09
yep...

Nobody like your comment but it's true.. it doesn.t matter cables to me.. but the ps3 don't have a usb connector in the back... I don't like a mess with cables.

by justincoool - 2007-04-26 13:49:05
I will get it....

The eyetoy for my singstar is a hd/IP camera, but I figure sony made this one for mass consumers, to keep cost down they omitted some expensive features.

by justincoool - 2007-04-26 13:50:43
"my singstar" aka singstar ps3

had to clarify my last post

by - 2007-04-26 14:38:42
huh?

The original Eye Toy is capable of 640x480 at 30 fps. How do they get the new camera has 4x the resolution?! It only has twice the framerate.........

by - 2007-04-26 14:58:50
PlayStation Eye can't be bluetooth..

the current bluetooth specification doesn't provide for enough bandwidth for smooth video. It would require the combined bandwidth of 6 of the PlayStation 3's 7 available bluetooth channels...and I believe the PlayStation 3 can only receive WiFi.

He knows...

because unlike you he is familiar with FACTS... 1080P + a resolution of 1920X1080....so a 640X480 picture will be either quite tiny or,if blown up, really blurry....and don't even talk about 320X240 (ie. gammer pic resolution). But, not so bad for people running 480i/p, as that res is 640X480, and the video would be full screen. An Hd camera would be sweet, and totally possible, it's just that it'd probably cost $200+ for one that does 30fps, and it would only be good for recording videos, as it would require way to much bandwidth for full res video chat over the net....not to say it couldn't downsample for chatting though.... I like that you can record videos....I could have a nice collection of amateur porn by now if I had that, as the camera is so non-descript...just leave it on and the rest is history :P

Can recieve WiFi.

"and I believe the PlayStation 3 can only receive WiFi." Wrong.

by - 2007-04-26 19:07:15
Hmmm

Dang looking pretty good, wonder if i could use it with my Xbox 360 that would be cool any body car to comment?

by - 2007-04-26 22:16:09
Linux Drivers?

If Sony is going to support the PS3 Linux movement, I say they must release a PPC Linux driver for the Playstation Eye. Official Playstation Eye support for only the Game OS will prove Sony's lack of commitment for PS3's Linux crusade that Sony was trying to push.

BOB

Is this for the ps2 or ps3 or psp

by CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2007-04-27 03:16:08

by - 2007-04-27 04:33:36
PS3 duh!!

PS3 man read it carefully and u'll find out

by - 2007-04-27 05:05:38
ahem

does "double sided sticker" ring a bell? stick it anywhere you like that doesn't cost your fortune if it has sticker marks on it.

by - 2007-04-27 05:45:04
to "ME"

The PS3 can use BLUETOOTH 2.0 and WiFi B/G and you are wrong!!

by - 2007-04-27 06:21:24
wifi

it can transmit also, you can prove it by connecting your psp wireless-ly to the ps3. since the psp doesn't have bluetooth

by BlacKDraGoN_ - 2007-04-27 09:19:10
hmmm..

i just hope that it comes out in the U.S. pretty soon as well and i hope that it doesnt cost more than maybe US$40.00. i could expect that to maybe be the cost

by Shatterdome - 2007-04-27 13:35:35
Of course...

it can transmit and receive wi-fi....what he meant is wi-fi is the only other signal it's able to receive wirelessly.... Also, they will not make a wi-fi wireless anything, as that requires putting a networking solution into the device (ie. wireless network card + programming) and that's not going to happen for a camera...or anything.

by - 2007-04-27 13:45:33
