Ergonomics of the PS3 Keypad: how comfortable is it, really?

Ó

Back in the Leipzig GC 2008 event, Sony revealed their SIXAXIS peripheral for text input, the PS3 Keypad. Ever wondered what it looked like in the hands of a gamer? Here are some pictures from MTV Multiplayer to, well, lend you a hand.

Just to give you an idea of size differences, the first two pics are of MTV Multiplayer's Stephen Totilio's hands (who says he's 5'6") and the other two pics are of PlayStaion Home lead developer Jack Buser's (Totillo says Buser is bigger than him).

Totilio notes that the peripheral itself doesn't add much weight to the PS3 controller. And Buser, who says he's been able to use the peripheral a lot already, is able to "blaze through typing with it, to reach for the hardest-to-reach keys." (as seen in the third pic)

Well, I'm still not completely sold to the idea... this coming from a) someone prone to dyslexia (as in the case of spelling out "Large Hadron Collider" sooo wrong so many times now), and b) someone with butterfingers. I may take some time getting used to it (which would be the same case with each and every other text input device or controller anyways), but damn, this definitely beats carrying around a clunky keyboard.

Third PIC - Why is he reaching? Just use your left thumb!

Anyway, I look forward to this. I hate typing on the PS3.

» Agreed

He could have just moved his left thumb up instead of being so dramatic.

And this is definitely a must have. The onscreen keyboard is hell. The wii's is easier.

He had to reach with his right thumb because his left thumb was busy holding down another key. That'd be the shift key, I believe...

Which is weird because there's a shift key on the right side too.

He could have just used his right thumb to hit the right-hand side shift, and then use his left thumb to hit whatever button (I think it's the "1" button on top) he was trying to press.

Maybe it's just a demo of how acrobatic you can get with the Keypad? LOL. Go Jack Buser!

How often do you actually use text input?

Not sure about the rest of you but its not very often for me. I've got a USB mini keyboard anyway. And those buttons look pretty small and close together.

I guess your not gonna know until you've got one in your hands and tried it for yourself. It looks good though.

But how much do they cost and when are they actually getting released?!

by Gino D. - 2008-10-02 08:49
» price, release date

The original press release (i.e. their announcement during Leipzig GC) was never really clear on it.

But according to Amazon, it's 40 bucks, end of November. Other online sources say the same thing. "Sometime November" and "around 40-50 bucks".

» Madcatz or Nyko?

Isn't one already made by Madcatz or Nyko?(one of those companies, not too sure which) From my opinion, I think the one that is out is better.

» I don't think so...

It looks as though the L1 an R1 buttons are a part of the keyboard.

I can see the left trigger button just fine in the third picture.

» Movement?

Is this thing still going to have the touchpad abilities that were previously announced?

The keys were also supposed to have touchpad sensing so you could move a cursor just by running your fingers over them.

by Henkibojj - 2008-10-03 06:21
» Not touchpad

What I heard was that there won't be any touchpad, but actually pressing the buttons by sliding the finger across the board would act as a touchpad, only you PRESS buttons instead of TOUCHING a pad.

Then again, I might have misunderstood it. Maybe the keys were touchpad-ic after all.

I can't wait for this but honestly seems kind of like an 360 ripoff
