Ephraim talks on SCE Australia phasing out 60 GB model |
Ó
In a recent interview with GameSpot, Sony Australia's managing director Michael Ephraim talks about their recent decision to discontinue the 60 GB model for the PlayStation 3, leaving only the 40 GB model to fill the market. He expresses that this is the right decision for the company to do, despite the criticism they receive.Ephraim explains that even though the 40 GB version will not be sporting backwards compatibility with PS2 titles, it can still be upgraded. Portable media slots and USB adaptors can be purchased and the hard drive memory can also be increased. The strength of the console wasn't reduced, "we've just reduced the capability of the machine in those areas."
Ephraim says that flak is expected for their decision, but that it was the right move to do:
We seem to be copping flak on just about everything we do. What we just have to say on that is, if you look at the sales figures [...] 83,000 units at a price that everyone said was expensive, that's a very solid result. [...] We believe the PS3 product will prove that the vision was correct. Whenever you have a new item that is establishing new boundaries in entertainment, you're going to cop flak.

"The strength of the console wasn't reduced, "we've just reduced the capability of the machine in those areas." " if i cut off my feet, my whole strenght will still be preserved?
Can't beleive the setbacks sony keep putting out and not appologising, instead just saying "its ok". "We seem to be copping flak on just about everything we do" Thats because u keep stuffing up. I had a pre-order paid for on the "First release" which got knocked back 6 months !!! I thought, great there will be heaps of games out, but just about every single game has been delayed ... Not too mention the poor families that have put all their money into PS2 games and want to upgrade can't keep their old games. This is Poor management from Sony yet again. I friggin Love the PS3 but I'm constantly waiting waiting for stuff to happen .... ps. Sony needs to update their games release dates ... Every date on their website is WRONG !! Come out Sony pull ur finger out !!! Grumpy.
I think in their case, they'd like to think they're merely clipping their nails. ;p
I was going to buy a PS3 when the prices came down, I think I'll just forget that now and stick with my PS2. Unless I move to another country the PS3 isn't going to be a good deal it seems... ever! not while idiots like him are in control. I will not buy a PS3 without backwards compatibility, I wasn't even happy when they took out the hardware for it and said it'll be software driven, but you'll hafto wait for everything to work. can we have the american or japan sony move into australia, our sony sucks, heck I'll even take the europe sony over ours. You think Sony would treat all countries fairly wouldn't you?
While a good feature to have, it really isn't necessary. I noticed this the other day while playing God of War 2. I tried it upscaled to 1080p on my 60gb PS3 (with true hardware backward compatibility) and it looked OK, but the upscaling really just makes it blurry to compensate. Then I tried the PS2 (which I leave hooked up next to the PS3) and used high def mode at 560p or whatever it is and it looked sharper and better. I couldn't get the 560p mode working on the PS3. I leave my PS2 (I have 3 of them) next to the PS3 to save wear and tear on the expensive PS3 and use the PS2 when I can anyway so I can see why sony isn't concerned about backward compatibility anymore. Software emulation for 2,000+ games would be very difficult so I can see why they aren't going with that either. For once I am defending sony's laziness and cheapness, after all they need a cheap PS3!
dont be a MOOOO ron! Listen up! There is still software emulation. And not one complaint from the public about thier software not waorking on thier NON B/C machines. And even if they had a problem with a title next year, THE PS3 has more than enough computing power for the software to be upgraded and adapted to fit each and every WHINERS wims. Think about it you mooooo ron
