Electronic Arts: Godfather II delayed, even more layoffs planned |
Ó
Guns, pasta, and cats. That's the life of the Godfather. Unfortunately, you won't be able to take over the title of Don just yet. EA's mobster game The Godfather II (PS3, 360) has been delayed for a few months, and will be released sometime between April and June.
The official reason given was to hype up the game a bit more. EA CEO John Riccitiello says the game is a "solid title" but that it "would get its best shot at success in [fiscal] Q4." It's smart for EA to be careful about the timing of its releases nowadays, with the economy being as it is. Also, it seems the studio is having some internal financial troubles.
According to the figures they posted for their last quarter, they lost US$ 641 million due to a weak holiday run. It probably isn't as bad as it sounds, but it's no comfort that they increased the number of their projected employee layoffs from 10% to 11%. Looks like the high body count won't just be in the Godfather game.

They did this with the Sims 3 also. It was to be released in only a few weeks and they pushed it back father to "market" it more
Doesn't seem so smart to me to push back a title to create hype. Especially if they are laying people off. Ship the title and make some money. If it is a good game then sales will snowball as people discuss it. I will definitely be very leary of picking up this game now because it sounds like they need as many people as possible to buy it the first week. Sounds like they know it won't do well over time. I can understand when there are tech problems, but it sounds like the marketing team may just be extending their jobs while programmers are let go. Just silly.
No one delays something to add more hype/advertisement. They do it because they found a last minute major issue that needs fixing before it can go gold.
Its a nice cover story but unless they actually start advertising, I wont believe it.
I mean I see very very few video game comericals on tv (minus nintendo wii games) I think maybe motor storm is the second most then would have been GTA4.
I remember with the ps1 there were actual comericals for FF7 on tv all the time. Cant remember the last time I saw a game hardcore advertised on tv.
