PlayStation 3 - Image 1Eidos U.S. CEO Bill Gardner has said that while he doesn't believe that the price of Sony's PlayStation 3 video game console is too high, he also believes that the recent US$ 100 price cut for the console will not be able to draw as big a part of the mass market as Sony hopes.

"I don't think [the price cut] is enough to reach the mass consumer," said Gardner in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, "but I think it is enough to get it moving again, and it will move a little bit further, and they'll need to do it again and it will move a bit further."

Gardner also emphasized the PS3's value thanks to the console's built-in Blu-ray player. "Go buy an HD or a Blu-ray player. Go ahead. Tell me what it costs you. Then take a look at the PS3," he said. Gardner also said that he thinks "additional people [will] pick it up and use it, maybe not necessarily exclusively as a game player but as a Blu-ray player and a game player, and there is an advantage to that."

» Sure

It will be a great Blu-Ray player which is great unless, of course, Blu-Ray goes the way of the Dodo. If that happens, the "added value" just becomes "added cost".

» Getting old

I'm getting real tired of the whole PS3 is expensive. Bottom line is there are people that can and cannot afford it. How *****ing cheap do you want the PS3 to be??? I think that its well worth the money.

Blu ray player

Wifi ready (still not included on the 360 Elite)

HDMI port

Free online gaming

I thought about a 360 and I am glad I did not get it. Just recenty I found out that the Elite, Premium and Core does not include Wifi. The Wii has Wifi for gods sake!! You get what you pay for with the PS3.

The 360 Elite is a scam. For $500 you get HDMI and a bigger HD. Whoop dee doo!! These should have been included with the premium from the get go.

» getting old (continued)

these articles are getting old.. we alll know what's going to happen when MGS4/GT5/FFXII..(the list goes on) come out.. we dont need these morons to keep telling us its too expensive! afterall, we all bought one, didnt we?

by Rikimaru - 2007-07-31 07:00
» Pointing out the obvious

I think the whole "PS3 is expensive" should be dropped. Its like pointing out that water is wet. If you can't afford one then skip it. Boo hoo its expensive...then STFU and buy a 360 or wii. If I was in the market fo a car and I have money to afford a good car, then WTF would I settle for a CVhevrolet when I can afford a Benz?!?

by Hellraiser - 2007-07-31 07:50
» What price cut?

All sony did was temporarily slash prices to clear out old stock, then introduce a model that's cheaper to make for the same price.

In essence, it's a price increase! You get less backward compatibility, and a measely 20gb of hard drive space in return.

Of course it's insufficient! Who ever said a HD movie player was worth $500 or $600 in the first place? Look at the people who bought DVD players for $500 when they first came out. They were crappy and basic with few features. Are any of those players still around? What are they worth today? Nothing?

by RU*****enKiddinMe - 2007-07-31 08:43
» what the heck?

We should see the price of PS3 to be $100 by the end of the year. That will make everyone happy. Oh.. no, I forgot. no one will be happy. It's too cheap.

Dang!!!

» Look to yourself

Why don't you look at your own company and let others handle theirs.

by Thabor - 2007-07-31 10:22
» Price increase?

I bet you pretend differently when Microsoft does the same thing with the 360 Core.

by PS3Rider - 2007-07-31 10:43
» ...

Ah yes but those DVD players didnt have firmware updates.

by @ Hellraiser - 2007-07-31 10:54
» Your an ass

Oh since you put it that way I feel so betrayed by Sony boo hoo. I guess I'm going to have to sell my PS3 and get an Elite..NOT!!!

HD DVD players are $500 to $600 because it's new tech moron!! All you've pointed out is tech gets cheaper. Will your 360 be $400 5 years from now?? SO in a sense you just called your 360 crappy and basic which actually is bang on.

Premium 360 + $399.99

HD DVD + $179.00

Pay for online gaming

Hmmm.. Looks like 360 owners are getting fleeced.

» ????????

well eventhough i payed up for one i still think they are too expencive.

you do get your moneys worth for the technology you get .......B U T,where the ***** are all the games for it?

whats the point of paying £500+ for a brand new "next gen" console when you dont have some good games to play on it, theres about 5 good games iv played on and theres about 5 more games out in the uk that arnt that good, thats about 10 games iv seen out to date for the ps3 and theres only one that i would consider a true next gen game for graphics, gameplay and look and i think it was relesed at the console launch back in november last year i think(not sure about the date).

any way the point im trying to make is that we need more realy fresh and outstanding games for this new console and not more GTA clones or copycat games from the ps2 with better graphics.

sony wants us to pay top doller for a console

sony should make or allow for good games to be relesed on the console then maybe more people would pay top doller

by Anon - 2007-07-31 12:30

"B U T,where the ***** are all the games for it?"

If it help at all, Lair will be out August 14.

by Rikimaru - 2007-07-31 12:44
» Are you simple???

You bought one?? Are you sure?? I bought one and before I decided to plunk down $600 in the "pricey" PS3 I knew there was not a lot of games for it. It's called research!!

Sony wants us to pay top dollar for a console

- Yes and No. Its still up to you if you want to pay for what Sony wants for their machine

Sony should make or allow for good games to be released on the console...

-WTF?!? I did not know that sony was hindering for games not to be released on the PS3??? And last time I looked, there were good games coming out for the PS3.

by bob2 - 2007-07-31 12:44
» why pay for it now?

to ensure its future! i bought my ps3 as soon as i could find one because i knew the games WOULD be there eventually.. plus every time someone buys a ps3 early we get better ***** down the line.. we wouldnt be losing exclusilves so quickly :(

» Who twisted your arm?

I just want to make sure that I read your post correctly.

"whats the point of paying £500+ for a brand new "next gen" console when you dont have some good games to play on it"

You made the decision to buy your PS3 when you did. I made the same decision to buy mine when I did!

One glaring thing I must mention is that you said yourself that it was "brand new" so you should have known what it had for games.

I knew what it had for games when I purchased it. I knew that it would be at least a year before developers really had it figured out enough to start flexing it's muscles. I also knew that until it had all of the games that I wanted to play that it could be used as one of the best BD players on the market. It's wi-fi also allows it to do wonderful things with streaming media! Sony never made you any promises about when the blockbuster games would start to hit the shelves.

"sony wants us to pay top doller for a console"

You are completely correct! They do want us to pay top dollar for a console. They aren't forcing any of us to do so, though! They are not going to buy DLC, exclusives, or your place in their community.

They are going to continue to sell an excellent piece of well built machinery on the retail market for as much money as people are willing to pay for it. With the included hardware, e.g. wi-fi, GbE, bluetooth, card reader slots, HDMI, HDD, and BD, it is worth it's value and more. If you don't believe me ask Sony how much money it loses with each one sold.

When a PS3 owner complains about Sony not producing enough games to keep them happy they are making two mistakes.

The first is assuming that ALL of the content is produced by Sony. The only thing that Sony makes all of is the hardware! Many different companies contribute content in order to build a consoles game catalog. There was an article on QJ not long ago covering the advantages and pitfalls of having too many first party or too many third party games in a consoles catalog. A good mix is far better for longevity and success!

The second mistake that a PS3 owner makes when saying I bought an PS3 and now I am pi$$ed because there are no good games for it is that you are now joining with the XBOTS. There are enough games for it to keep you busy until the first of the killer games start to roll out this fall! If there are not enough then watch some BD movies. They blow DVD's away!

XBOTS have an excuse but it is hard to make sense of someone that says I bought this console and now I am pissed for lack of games. To me that is like buying a car that runs on CNG and then crying because I can't fill the fuel cell anywhere near my home. It just doesn't make sense to purchase something that you did not have a good reason to purchase in the first place. It also doesn't make sense to cry because you bought a product before it built a foothold in the market unless you planned on waiting for it to gain it's stride.

My two cents!

by doodad - 2007-07-31 17:51
» i actually like that's its expensive

then it wont go the way of the GBA and the DS where every single 8 year old has one and they buy those stupid games (ex: spongebob and 99% of all the other tv show/movie games) which makes developers make more cheap games and it becomes a never ending cycle!!!!!!!

by doodad - 2007-07-31 17:53
» HAHAHA

Hellraiser, your comments always make me laugh so hard!!! Keep it up!!!

by Shatterdome - 2007-07-31 18:30
» PRobably won't though...

Sony is pretty big in the movie biz and can pull some weight, so BD will no doubt be bigger then HDDVD.

Thing is, it will take awhile for it to catch on at the level they want...and something else could come around by then.

by Shatterdome - 2007-07-31 18:32
» Rikimaru...

You understand they want to target the mass market, not just the hardcore nerds that live in their moms basement and think they are cool by having an overpriced console.

Nintendo hit the mass market quite well, why do you think it's quadrupling the number of sales of the PS3...

Price is not an issue ? Think again buddy...

by Stealth! - 2007-07-31 19:10
» Shatterdome

I see your back with BS as usual. The xbox with all its add-ons is high way robbery more expensive than PS3. Its a shame that xbox couldn't just allow you to have all of them as standard.

With this it shows you The S3 is a great buy and due to the fact PSN and Home is better than XBL. Hell it accomplished more in less time XBL did when it first cane out, scary huh.

» @ jayo83

Get a life will ya, your being a whining fantard. Folding Junkie! Once again you have proven why your smarter( or just have common sense and logic) than some. Good points buddy, i couldn't have said it better myself.
