No cosplaying in PS3 Home - Image 1

Home, Sony's online virtual community for the PS3, will apparently strictly be a t-shirt and jeans affair. In a recent interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine, Home Executive Producer Peter Edwards revealed that having non-human and other fantastical avatars "is not the Home ethic".

"If everyone's walking around dressed as Orcs or stormtroopers or whatever, then you lose that welcoming, accessible element that means Mum, Dad, and your sister might get involved as well," said Edwards. "The idea is to keep it as accessible, mainstream, and friendly as possible."

That effectively rules out any kind of cosplaying by Home users. Personally, this blogger thinks this could lead to some backlash about censorship and the freedom to express one's individuality, but then there are other ways to express yourself apart from dressing up as a balding red ape with a necktie.

What about you guys? Leave a comment below and let us know what you think.

Fine with me....

It would be pretty stupid if you could do it anyways. Glad sony didn't go that way with this....
by senjutsu - 2007-06-06 13:52:00
yeah

it would be really gay to have all the freaks spam the network with stupid costumes... But Still, I think it would be better if we could wear watheer we want in OUR home, at least! (photos of your own shirts :D )

I'm glad too

I have nothing against people who wanna do it but I always thought Home's avatars were free of the usual "game fantasy" stuff a lot of other games cater to. I could see if the Wii or Sims offered these things out of the box then maybe there would be an argument but cosplay isn't what I think Home is about.

Censorship...

It has nothing to do with censorship, and everything to do with this being sony's platform that they are giving to you for free. Therefore they make the rules...if you really want people to see you cosplaying, then dress yourself up, video tape it and put it on youtube... I love how people think they can complain about free things...
by - 2007-06-06 14:14:02
yeah...

Is a social network and I don't want to see a some weird walking arount... not to play pool with some monkey... anyway... if they just let personalization and in our own home can share things it will be cool for me...
by - 2007-06-06 14:23:09
Sorry, but I dont believe any of you

This seems really stupid. it would have been a lot funnier if you could have had more choices, they've just taken the easy way out. And you lot. I think you're just taking the usual "Yeah we don't care, our console did it all right". Believe it or not, your console can do things wrong, you dont have to like everything about it. There will be one or two PS3 owners who dont actually want to see stuff like cosplays in Home. But the majority probably couldn't care less, and think this is something other console fanboys will hold against it, so they act like they're proud of it.

...

To much caffein can be bad sometimes.. anyway... if u are the kind of person that like to be a cyborg ninja well cool.. don't use home anyway.. like the guy before is something free... that they can be better.. of course... SONY are not doing the best in their PS3 but is too soon to say something... still in beta and I'm not in... and nobody is telling that their console is perfect... if thats the case nobody will telling that sony are not listening to the consumer... telling that this console have this and yours not... but anyway... thats the way u r thinking ok then

Good move imo

Actually most would. It would cause a complete change of atmosphere. I think you are trying to blame people actually being rational on fanboyism. It wouldn't be cool to have a cool, building with nice architecture and then seeing people dressed as Orcs. Its like no way! They just don't fit in. Its like swaping out all the characters in GTA for something random. Yea it would be funny, but the type of game it is allows that. Here it would be completely inappropriate and change the experience for other people too.

if...

if there were different costumes and funny outfits etc. then that could turn into a competition about who has the coolest outfit especially if you unlock them as people will rival againts others to have the new coolest funny costume from games while others just want to meet people, chat and play games and you have these people running round spamming saying "look at my costume, i am the best" if you just have humans then you can customize each and everyone of them to your liking and no one will be the same so no one go go round saying "i have the best avatar, you all suck!"

Meeting place

I see Sony's vision on this as being a meeting place --a virtual Starbucks. If they can keep it fairly adult (at least as far as keeping fantasy costumes out of the picture), there's probably a real possibility that there'll be dating services and a whole unexpected outcrop of social events form from Home.

man.. i wanted to be shao kahn or something

but at the very least, i want to put pictures on my t shirts and jeans...and maybe one week only during halloween they will let use dress up...but if they retrict creation and not let certain cultures have their look...i am going to think the delopers are races...i am mostlty talking about scotish, australian, and japanese...also i want to see more old like cloths...like suits
by - 2007-06-06 15:03:47
Bob

u really dont know what da hell your talkin bout, so dont speak for others. im pretty sure every single person on my buddy list likes not having weird stuff walking around... i think people tend to forget Home isnt a game. N your damn right i dont care, cuz they did do it right
by gtauk - 2007-06-06 15:10:53
woops

it made 2
by - 2007-06-06 15:18:10
WTF!?!?!?!?!

I completly agree with $ony on this one. This is supposed to be a REAL WORLD hang out spot. When you go to the mall do you see Orcs walking around? NO!!! This isn't a fiction project. It's a non-fiction project and I hope it stays that way!

I'm not complaining!

But I do like the decision to only allow human avatars. With a large enough selection of clothing and accessories available self expression will not be difficult. I really am humored by the fact that the article writer is concerned with the ability to express yourself. The last time that I looked at a sizable group of people I did not see any monkeys, stormtroopers, or anything else except normal human beings. Is the writer trying to tell me that those people were not expressing themselves sufficiently? Home is meant to virtually replicate real life. They are not trying to produce the atmosphere of a bar in Tatooine! I don't see any reason for a monkey avatar to be available in the name of self expression. I am not a purple monkey and I would bet that your not either. Like you said youtube is for crap like that.
by - 2007-06-06 16:28:43
Good

That would be stupid if they had un-human characters, if you want that crap go play WoW
by - 2007-06-06 17:33:47
ya I agree

I personally would not find Home enjoyable with a bunch of "creatures" walking around. Now if they let you have pets, that would be cool. Anyone know if we'll be able to buy pets? :)
by - 2007-06-06 18:45:44
well

theres always people who are normal in everyday life, and by contrast like to parade around as something weird on the internet. tron guy for example
by - 2007-06-06 18:56:58
TO THOSE WHO DON'T LIKE THIS POLICY

You must hate every game you play. Could you change the look of the chars in the last final fantasy? Nope. How about WoW? Can you have a storm trooper? Nope. The point is the addon must be kept within reason the the scope. Where I can see how in many situations user customization would be cool I think there are a lot of drawbacks too. (Copyrights, Profanity, Nudity, Relavance) These violations would probably be rampant and too tough to monitor. Therefore I have to agree with this decision.
by - 2007-06-06 19:00:47
On the money.....

I agree with what appears to be the majority here. I realize that there are people so unhappy with their existance that they want to dawn a monkey or cyborg suit for the solitary purpose of disrupting things for everyone else. Maybe I am self centered, but I enjoy seeing a character that looks like me and can socialize with others that look like real world humans and not some made up creature. There are other forums for that and you don't have to use Home as I don't use those places. Here is a life's lesson: Don't ***** about the things you hate, enjoy the things you like. There are plenty of things in HOME that you can do to express yourself and just like in the real world, dawning a creature suit is NOT one of them. Finally, I praise Sony for attempting to have "rules of society" it makes the online experience better for those of us that want to escape to a "Virtual Real World" ;-) . All of the crap (Glitching, modding, foul language, racism and out right cheating) is what is keeping online play and socializing from being what it could be and is a perfect example of what the world would be like with out law and order. Also hiding behind some monster makes all those things easier for the people that want to do them, from a psychological perspective, people are more apt to act like people if they appear as people... Looking forward to mmeeting some of you in HOME!!!
by - 2007-06-06 19:05:36
Thank you!

You make perfect sense, dont understand what others like bob are talking about hahaha. I agree with sony's decision; who wants to be walking around and have weird avatars left right center. That tends to kinda drive some people away if you know what I mean.
by darkgeekrocker - 2007-06-06 20:50:00
we will have pets

but that after the final release of home...it was in GDC...and good to know creatures (as long as LittleBigPlanet works out)
by - 2007-06-07 00:22:29
HEY

Actually, they could enable such possibilities on days like Christmas, Halloween etc. ain't i right? that would add the feeling to the game!
by - 2007-06-07 00:49:22
sage

*****ING STUPID NO TO HAVE THIS THATS LIKE SAYING YOU CANNOT WEAR WHAT YOU WISH IN REAL LIFE
by - 2007-06-07 01:46:36
lol...Anon

u can wear wat u want in real life but do you see people in monkey suits n 5hit? u can wear normal clothes and not so normal clothes in Home, just not crazy things
by - 2007-06-07 05:04:31
come on sony, let me express myself!

I would get an avatar that looks like a huge walking *****. Then people would know I am a true PS3 fanboy!
by - 2007-06-07 05:12:47
.

Nah scratch that, everyone knows I'm a d1ck. Instead, I could be a walking 360 with 3 red lights because that's all I can talk about. It's all I know. It's my basis for existance. I would tell everyone "Hey, I'm a broken 360! All of them break so buy a PS3 and help my favorite company sony!" Of course I'm too dumb to realize everone on home is using PS3s.
by - 2007-06-07 07:25:27
perfect example of the kind of idiot we don't wasnt to see in Home

I mean look at this guy's name "sage" give me a brake. These post are something else where people should be people. Use a real name there "sage" and go play WOW.
