When word got out that 80GB Sony PlayStation 3 units would no longer be available in retailer Best Buy, the gaming scene went ablaze. Now we've got information from a reliable source that giant retailer EBGames/Gamestop will follow Best Buy's move.

Kaizer_911, an EBGames/Gamestop manager, tipped us off that stock of 80GB PS3 units will be unavailable from their shelves in the near future. "I can't say for sure whats going on with the 80GB PS3 but I can relate to Best Buy," he comments.

Our source says that the stores in their district have not received a replenishment of 80GB PS3s since late November. However, it was revealed that 40GB PS3 supplies kept flowing in without a hitch. Kaizer_911 narrates:

I went ahead and looked in our Back Office Inventory screen and found that the only SKU listed as Active for the PS3 consoles (new ones that is) was the 40GB. The 20, 60, AND 80 GB SKUs were listed as Deleted.

Kaizer_911 maintains that the inventory status in question is company-wide in scope. "Unless Sony is just changing the bundles, it looks like a discontinue to me," finishes the EBGames/ Gamestop manager.

If you remember it, Kaizer_911 is the same source who gave us a heads-up on the discontinuation of the 20GB PS3. Which eventually proved true. We'll keep you posted for more.

Looks like either a price drop or a new bundle. Maybe both. Perhaps the possible new bundle will come with a Dual Shock 3 and a new game or something. It could also be a new SKU, such as a bigger hard drive, 120gb like many speculate.

Then again, it could be the white SKU, but I want a black PS3 thats not a 40gb, since i need the BC. Who knows? As sneaky as Sony is, they might do something to blow us away.

I can't imagine Sony not having a ps3 SKU no bigger than 40GB. If they want people to really get into DLC and stuff like that, they need something bigger because 40GB just won't cut it.

It's also unlikely that BC will be totally forsaken. They'd have to be losing some serious marbles if they won't take the massive psx and ps2 libraries as an advantage against the competition.

This is all crap. I work for Gamestop (I hate admitting that) and there is no where in our computers that shows deleted SKU's. If the 80GB SKU were in fact deleted, then we wouldn't even be able to sell the 80GB systems we had in stock. I wouldn't believe anything from this source.

ebola...use F10 and look up PS3 in department 02 once the lookup is done in the results list it will list the sku, dept, STATUS, description, price, quantity(sellab le and defective), rating, and reserve status. But only if SGA or higher will all that show. The Status column will either be an A or D...A for active or D or deleted/delisted/discontinued take your pick. When item is D status its no longer available both from warehous and manufacturer. Learn how u use your inventory system.

I was questioning this articles use of the word "deleted" because then the SKU would be completely removed from the POS and you wouldn't be able to sell them. That is obviously not the case.

dear mr naroon, yep a new kind of bundle can possibly come out. like the ps1 changed to a dual shock bundle. and seeing as sony has its sights for online delivery, the next bundle may also have a big hdd (way bigger than 120gb) rather than just a dual shock 3, itll have both.

the next bundle will also NOT be ps2 backwards compatible, and not having a ps2 backwards compatible ps3 is just YOUR OWN FAULT. if you are really concern why not buy it now while it is still available (60gb and or 20gb, 80gb are half arse).

and these 80gb units are not popular unlike the new 40gb which boosted ps3 sales, so sony will eventually phase them out and create a new better deal bundle, like i said ps3+ds3+bigHDD and still without backwards compatibilty so they can pave the way to ps2 game download on PSN. yes evilish yet cleverish. two can play the microsoft download chacha game you know!

They're probably getting a new model ready. Since the 80gb model still uses the old 90nm cell chips, I'm sure sony has a cost reduced model that will replace it. Hopefully they aren't going to pull that one model with no BC crap like in europe.

In the 60GB model, And to make it better increase the size to 120, with Full BC and everything the 60 had. Oh yeah baby i sense that this could be it.
