Soviets logo - Image 1Electronic Arts has confirmed that the PlayStation 3 version of Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360) has been put on hold. While we've known this for a while now, it's the first time that the game's developers acknowledged its status and gave an explanation on why they took the action.

Speaking to Videogamer, Red Alert 3 producer Amer Ajami said that EA LA had to put the PS3 version on the shelf due to the system's issues with the game engine of their title. He described the PS3 as a powerful console, but at the same time said that it was tough to develop for.

Here's the rest of Ajami's statement:

We actually announced a PS3 version early on but that was when we were still doing a lot of technical exploration of the architecture. PS3 is a very powerful system but as you guys know it's very exotic and tough to develop for and our engine really at the time wasn't designed for PS3.

The producer did say that this doesn't mean that PS3 owners won't get to share in the RTS fun of the franchise's latest installment. He hinted that EALA may go back to the project in the future to try and make the whole thing work.

Here's hoping that more third-party developers can catch on to PS3 development. This isolationism on the PS3 is becoming a little annoying as of late.

Damn it, I don't want to wait much longer for this game. PS3 or nothing.

» Port :(

So basically they thought they could just do another cheap port and it would perform ok. A blunder only EA could make.

I thought they were getting wiser about this but I guess they have internal communication issues too.

you fail. anyone who plays the best RTS ever on a console is a crying failure.

» Actually

Actually, it's not completely stupid to play RA3 on a PS3.

If it gets a PS3 release and the devs incorporate support for keyboard and mouse, it can be a very "PC like" experience on the PS3.

I'm gonna go for the PC version though.

BTW, the RA games are good games but far from the best RTS ever.

Warcraft, BFME2 and the Dune games all rank higher IMO.

» Agreed

Damn straight - an RTS on a console? Really don't know why they're even bothering...will be nice if I can kick some console players ass though while I'm sitting behind my PC (I'll probably be able to do this blind folded too).

» Exactly

It gets a bit tiring hearing this developer or that cry that PS3 broke their engine. Hello: maybe that's what the *real* definition of "next-gen" means. --You can't just amend the old crap and expect it flog it to death and squeeze every last penny out of it. You actually have to build something ......new. (What a concept.)

yeah, ok. But, have you tried UT3 on the ps3 with mouse and keyboard? Now, ra3 on ps3 with mouse and keyboard wouldn't be a failure. High Res graphics, mouse and keyboard, and your rts is the same thing without needing to meet system requirements on a pc... sounds good to me.
