E3 update: Peter Moore says Dille's HD-DVD's death comment greatly exaggerated |
Ó
Following the last statement from Sony's Peter Dille, it's not surprising that someone from the Xbox 360 camp comes out to say his piece as well. Enter Microsoft's head of Interactive Entertainment Business Division, Peter Moore.Moore did not care about Dille's comment that the Xbox 360 will not be having a 10-year life cycle. He continued to say that Sony's opinion on what would happen in the next ten years is perfectly fine with him, and is not worth sparring about. However, Moore bristled a bit about Sony's claim that HD-DVD will be going out of business in a few months:
Of course, the fact that Sony has an economic interest in making sure that it's dead is interesting. I think his comments will be read with interest by folks in the European Union, and looking at the tactics the Blu-Ray forum has been using to ensure that retailers do things their way. Let's just look at what happens this holiday. I think it's kind of a preposterous statement. Within months? No.
Is Moore hinting that Sony is using underhanded tactics to ensure that the PS3 and Blu-ray come out on top of the console and format wars?
The Microsoft executive is confident that results in the future will disprove Dille's remarks. He could be right, since HD-DVD is currently doing well in European shores. When asked about the format wars, "On that mark I look forward to speaking with you at, say, CES next year," he said, referring to the next Consumer Electronics Show. "I was just looking at HD-DVD numbers over the weekend, and I think Toshiba may have an opinion about that."

Stop linking to the article about the flawed survey. HD-DVD selling more than Blue-ray when excluding PS3 is just non-sense.
Peter Dille is a trash talking douche. He's worse than Phil Harrison. Read his interview at this link:
http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=14679
Check out this dumbass quote:
"With the Xbox 360 you’ve got an inconsistent design, some have a hard drive, some don’t, and none of them have Blu-Ray, and the HD-DVD will be out of business in a matter of months. Is this a 10 year product? And by the way, it doesn’t even work. Do they want to be selling it for 10 years and refurbishing them all for 10 more years? I don’t think that’s a 10 year product. You could disagree with me, or they could disagree with me, but I’d put that up against the PS3 any day."
#1 Choosing if you want to spend half as much without a hard drive is a good thing if you want, not "inconsistent #2 Microsoft doesn't want your blu ray you're trying to force onto everyone and profit off of. #3 Your profit motivated opinion of blu ray you're shoving off as fact is irrelevant.
#4. The PS3's will never see the success of the PS1 or PS2 and never have the same 7 year life cycle they did (and you know it.) #5. BS it doesn't even work. That's the message you want to spread because you are on the losing side this time. If it doesn't work it gets fixed. My console lasted the last 16 months with no problems. The 360 isn't a 10 year product, but neither is your PS3. The hardware will be obsolete probably the same time as the 360, not later.
Strong, idiotic words from a senior VP of marketing. I thought those words came from a 15 year old fantard. You know sony's in trouble when they make desperate comments like that. This is no doubt in response to losing exclusives like MGS4 that were key to any chance of PS3 survival.
Firstly, having no HDD in some xbox's does make them inconsistent. Because devs cant make a game with the knowledge that everyone has one. Secondly, you make it sound like Sony is ramming Blu Ray down our throats when it is winning because of consumer choice. And finally I know two people with Xbox 360's and about 3 with PS3's. Both xbox people are on their second.
"Choosing if you want to spend half as much without a hard drive is a good thing if you want, not "inconsistent"
Having a hard drive in one model and not another, is inconsistent.
MS does make a profit off of HDDVD, one of their codecs are licensed.
And no, 360's do not work. 1 in 3 will fail. That's what he's referring to.
And yes, PS3 is a 10 year product. Just like PS1 was and PS2 will be shortly.
I should've known the comments were from you, the biggest moron on QJ
there is no way that the EU will find Sony guilty of anything. I think people forget that SONY was not the lone designer of Blue Ray, it was a group of companies that joined efforts to developed Blue Ray. The rumor is that EU wants to catch Toshiba, Universal, and Microsoft's deal regarding HD DVD releases.
"And no, 360's do not work. 1 in 3 will fail. That's what he's referring to."
So if one in three xboxs need to be sent in for repairs after a year or so and those that get sent in will be back to their owners in 2 weeks this means xbox's dont work??
Anyone could see what a major overstatement this is its the reason i dont like sony so much they lie and theyre so viscous like going on the radio and saying the ps3 is 3 times powerful than the xbox360 or the many other times they blatantly try to decieve consumers.
I would go through the rest of your comment but this utterly illogical statment alone shows you to be the sony fanboy you are
Well they quite litterally forcing anyone who wants a ps3 to fork out the extra doe it costs than if it would have been dvd. I do doubt that the majority of ps3 owners actually wanted a bluray player but its profitable for sony to do so
BOTH companies bad mouth each other...stop defending companies...it makes you look like an american b1tch that mindlessly sucks her bosses c0ck trying to get a raise...we should just simply, follow developers (who make your games) and go with the console they best support...i go with insomniac, yuke, square enix, and (now) media molecule
LITTLEBIGPLANET FTW!!!!
lol xbox 360s break down after a year or so more like a month or so
In terms of usage and quality whats the difference between the two formats?
yea, but hes right! when you exclude the ps3-sales, than hd-dvd is selling better! thats just a fact, sony-fanboy!
if you dont know, what you are talking about, than just let it....!
They each have good points, Its just that Blu Ray is overall more superior in quality. But Microsoft made the smart move by including a DVD on one side and HD-DVD on the other for some movies. This is there only hope for success as it will make the "move" to HD easier for people. But the HD-DVD single movies will not stand a chance. The main problem is that if you own a Xbox 360, you need a $150 -$200 add on to even watch them. PS3 on the other hand, has Blu Ray built in(VERY SMART MOVE).It is now actually cheaper to go with Blu Ray..
X360(HD-DVD) Premium X360($399)+HD Add on($150)
Xbox 360 with HD-DVD = $549
PS3(Blu- Ray) 60GB PS3($499)
PS3 with Blu- Ray = $499
I hate to say it, but PS3 has the upper hand....=(

I would say only $ony bad mouths other companies.
When sony does an interview to "talk about the 360" it's nothing but an attack. They only say what they think is wrong with it, then exaggerate the hell out of it on top of that. What kind of professional refers to a competitor's product and blatently says something like "And by the way, it doesn't even work" Then act like the problem will not be fixed for 10 more years, when it's already been upgraded.
Just look at Peter Dille's picture. Looks like a guy that would start s*it in a bar and make you want to beat the s*it out of him. Anybody with half a brain knows Peter Dille is a trash talking moron.
Peter Moore is just like whatever man make up whatever you want. You're going to far with the HD-DVD lie though.
BS! $ony is pulling all the strings there. The other companies are only signed on to license out the technology. Sony started blu ray development on their own so they could get nearly all the profits. That's why they didn't get approval from the DVD forum to make a unified format, so they could make more money.
Anyway, I can't wait to see how this investigation goes.
I'm sure you completed a full investigation on your own and rightfully can defend them though.
for someone from Microsoft to talk about Dirty tactics.....unbelievable
this is coming from the Company that has ruined the OS [operation systems] market with disgusting monopoly.....people never had the choice to install their own OS....MS forces OEM makers to have the windows OS pre-installed on every computer and threatens to take their license from anyone who refuse
thanks for DELL,s brave move....people finaly have a choice in a different and a superior OS....screw microsoft and its 400$ garbage [Vista]
dont wait....stop the Monopoply and install one of the most popular and easy to use Linux disrtos on your PC:
http://www.ubuntu.com/
get Ubuntu linux and kiss goodbye for freezes, spyware ,crashes, and save your wollet from having to spend for microsoft trash
use Wine...a project that allows you to run some applications that were designed for windows on linux, you can learn more on this spectacular project at:
http://www.winehq.org/
once wine is more refined......MS and windows are finished,MS can threaten to sue linux users but let see if it dares to do so,Europeans wont stand still for this garbage
dont wait....go and start knowing what MS "NEVER" wants you to know.....know about LInux Ubuntu and Wine
dont wait....go to the sites mentiones, and FREE yourself from MS for all eternity
Do it..

[...] I would say only $ony bad mouths other companies.[...]
I do not agree. My impression is, there is a "Playstation" or "PS3" quote in every second comment MS makes (and especially PM makes). Now, saying Sony is the only company "badmouthing" another is pathetic. Especially given the bad bad press in the last couple of month and the constant pro MS reports.
I do also not agree to any attacks of either side, but say Sony is the only one and they are the "dark side" is, well, pathetic (I think I am repeating myself). All these comments of marketing people should be taken with a grain of salt.
The funny thing is, either you complain and say "forcing to buy" - which is still good, obviously you have an interesst in the PS3 - or you buy a competing product. Well, you can go 360, or Wii or PS2. If you can't afford a PS3, just wait but don't complain. I remember the same discussion with the PS2 when it came out. Back then there was no way I could afford one. Well, they "forced" DVD upon their game customers which nobody wanted (The PS1 used CDs, the Dreamcase their proprietary GD-ROM (now I would call that "forcing")). Today, nobody would complain about DVD anymore, the same will happen with BluRay in 2-3 years.
Also the main reason why stand alone DVD is outselling BluRay players is, there are almost no BluRay players available. Excluding the PS3 is even stupid, because, even buying a PS3 to watch BluRay only is a valid point. Beeing the PS3 the cheapest and best BluRay Player out there (guess which blu ray player will get an update by end of the year to support extended functionality). Most of 3rd party Blu Ray players will hit the market this holiday season, hopefully with a pre-$400 price range. I think after that time, we can continue discussing that subject again.
Saying Sony's interest in Blu Ray is their "greed" is uhm, "creative", too. At least they use open codecs unlike a OS vendor who tries to force everyone to support their proprietary decoders - and not only on HD DVD, but with Windows and because of their monopoly for every other OS vendor, too. (Ever tried to support wmv in anything not windows ?)
Yeah, right...
Ok, so lets remove the PS2 from DVD player sales and see what happened over the last 6 years with DVD sales...sounds logical huh.
You don't know what your talking about Akira...people buy whats most inexpensive to them to play their next gen formats, the PS3 is a Blu Ray player, so it must be considered in sales.
Look at E3. How many times did M$ mention the ps3 and wii in their presentation. Now how many times did nintendo and Sony mention M$.
now for your bullet points-
#1- all console not having a harddrive is the reason the ps2 harddrive was not used to make games load faster, nor did it recieve the full support it should have. The same hold for the 360.
#2- of course, they have windows. They have mastered the trojan horse. How can you hate sony when M$ does this same thing with Internet Explorer and Windows media player. When I rip cd's Windows media player converts then to wma when mp3 would be much more convenient. I wonder why?
#3- unless something drastic happens HD-dvd is dead, it may still be sold but this will probably be the last holiday season they are available. As a matter of fact almost none of the xbots that defend hd-dvd even use it. Look at the number of add-ons sold, pathetic.
#4- it may not sell 100 million, but they will last at least 7 years, unlike the 360 the ps3 does not use the same storage medium as last gen. Most games out now can fit on dvd9, but in 3 years when computers are getting blu-ray drives the 360 will be the only gaming machine without games on blu-ray. #5 Bull***** doesn't work, no matter how much you want mgs4, you can't and won't have it. The hardware won't be obsolete the same time as your 360, because it's better. " If it doesn't work it gets fixed." Good thing the system hasn't been out 2 years and It has a 33% breakdown rate, not good. You know why M$ gives you guys 3 year warranties now, because they didn't want to do a recall. That would have been funny, another problem with the doing a recall is the fact that they have not fixed the problem. Like it or not the 360 is flawed a 33% failure rate proves that.
Hey dummy got some news for ya. PS3 owners are winning this format war. Blu-ray is one of the main reasons I got a PS3, who in their right mind wouldn't "want" a blu-ray player. Of course we want to watch movies in real hi-def, why not. We are not like xbots, claiming to be hardcore while they play their games on standard def tv's, remember them saying hdmi was not important. One difference between xbots and PS3 owners seems to be that PS3 ans even PS2 owners care alot more about movies in general. Think about how M$ is forcing all 360 users to have a HDD, if you want to watch HD movies that is. But of course you can't just buy a hdd from the local computer store you have to pay double the price for an xbox only hdd.
M$ PWNS U!
PS3 format games are losing horribly.
ass hole.
Movie enthusiasts (the ones that buy a lot of disks) in general will not buy a console to watch movies on, as it is an inconvenient and usually noisy, lower quality experience. The winner of this format war will not be decided by PS3 or Xbox, but by whatever the real enthusiast chooses to support, in stand-alone form. I think Sony's efforts to push BR have severely compromised their focus on gaming (isn't that what these consoles are made for???), whereas MS, who has less financial interests in any HD movie format, has done the right thing by not making a big deal about it. Sony fanboy will draw parallels between what PS2 has supposedly done for DVD and what PS3 will do for BR, forgetting that in 2000 (when PS2 was released) DVD was already an established format for nearly 5 years without any competing formats. I had a DVD player YEARS before I had a PS2, and Sony shouldn't flatter themselves with the claim that PS2 made DVD a success. The film enthusiasts market has no patience for competing formats, and will not commit to buying a lolt of movies at this time, and Sony's decision not to support the DVD forum in HD-DVD may well have doomed both formats (remember it was Sony who has forced a format war on us because they HAD to have complete control over the HD format).
As for the 'Trojan Horse' that is Windows; there have ALWAYS been alternative OS' to install on your PC, but despite all its flaws, windows emerged as the most universal and compatible one, putting it in the position it is in now. This monopoly position was not achieved only by sleezy bussiness tactics and OEM abuse. You can still walk into any PC shop I know and order a PC without OS on it (built to order, as PC's were sold for years before the big OEM's started their 'budget PC' wars), so you can install whatever OS you want.
These comments by Dille are extremely childish and are a sign Sony has lost the ball in the gaming arena, clutching at straws to regain footing in a market they ruled for a decade but lost for no other reason but themselves. Sony should stop whining about the competition, should stop trying to explain why everybody needs BlueRay, should stop talking about 10 year plans, and should start doing what they did for the last 2 generations; deliver the best gaming experience possible, and they should start doing that NOW, otherwise there will not be a PS4.
Even sony didn't support the PS2 hard drive. You couldn't even use it as a memory card! The PS2 slim had no bay to use it!
Who would buy the HD-DVD add on when you can buy a whole player for $300? Also, only PS3 owners care about HD movie players because they were told to by sony.
That is the most intelligent thing I have ever read.
Please come back often! There's far too many idiots here.
blu ray isn't trying to monopolize?
Lots of companies are supposedly behind it, but sony developed it. Guess what, sony gets most of the profits.
Sony is being investigated by the European Union for their tactics they used to nearly force retailers to carry only blu ray.
Let's see how your "can't do anything wrong" company responds to that.
There has always been a choice of operating systems moron. Windows has been the most popular. Ever heard of Apple computers? If you hate MS buy an Apple, shut the f*ck up, and pretend to enjoy your half assed PS3 ports while waiting for games you hope will be good.
So those second 360s they got didn't work either? None of them work?
I'm just believing Peter Dille's lies like a brainwashed idiot.
