E3 2009: Debut trailer for Square Enix's Nier

Ó

I had no idea what Nier was when I first read Square Enix's E3 2009 lineup. Now I know a few things about it thanks to this teaser video. Well, three things actually.

First, it's the game Square Enix teased in OPM. Second, it's an action game that has a very palpable God of War vibe. Third, you'll be able to use multiple weapons. The trailer shows different swords and an axe, but I don't know yet if they are merely upgrades of the one sword the lead character, Nier, carries in the OPM screenshot.

The game's official website also reveals that it's "set in a crumbling world plagued by disease and dark, unrecognizable creatures". Nier's a bit of an oddity in Square Enix's predominantly young cast of protagonists, as he's definitely an older dude. He even has a kid afflicted with something called the Black Scrawl virus. This is Nier's primary reason for going all Kratos-like on his enemies as he searches for a cure.

Anyway. Enough with the chitchat. Here's the Nier teaser trailer. Cavia is handling development for this game, and it's being made for the PS3 and Xbox 360. You can also check out the game's official site here.

For a SE game it doesn't look too appealing to me. And trust me I'm like a SE fanboy.

I'm soooooooooooooo oooo underwhelmed. Square, maybe you should stick to the handheld games... minus FF of course.

Look at it as a video game. Not a Square Enix game. The video wasn't all too interesting but the game could very well be good. If you start looking at Square as only putting out RPGs starring teens then you then type cast them and lock them into a box of expectations and disregard any of their attempts at new things. Let them try new games and stop saying "for a Square Enix game..." Square Enix =/= RPG. Square Enix = quality game company.

I agree, and besides, the action in the trailer looked pretty sweat.

While I do agree with your first point, Square Enix isn't a quality company anymore. The times are over.
