Download PS3 games faster in Japan

Aside from not getting fat easily, having had the chance to get a free classic Wii controller for 5000 Wii points and being able to use the DS in the classroom, there is yet another perk to being a Japanese - faster store downloads of PS3 games.

Although CheapyD, the maker of this video, sure doesn't look Japanese, he claims that the download has been made in Japan. Read this: 586 MB in under two minutes. That, we know, is surely fast. Why it became that speedy, we don't know for sure, but here's the video as proof, lest you think that we jest.

» cached download?

ive had similar experiences with the US store, my tekken DR download was cancelled at around 15% then the 2nd time at 47% and each resume of the download the speed would go blazing fast but stops shortly after it hits the previous downloaded amount(i.e slows down at 47%)

suppose if he cancelled the download at 99% then resumes it im guessing it would be something similar.

Japan has better internet service than the US. Simple as that. The US is behind in the speed department for online. Japan also use fiber optic cables. It is a no brainer to why the download is faster. They have faster connections than the in the US and they are using better materials to transfer the data.

It's true...I also live in Japan and I made a video about 3 months ago showing the speed of the net in Japan. I have a 60 Meg fibre optic internet speed. You can check out my video also.

» ok.. US-> Sweden

Ok, explain this:

I download at similar speeds. I have a US PS3 and 100MBit (fiber) connection and I live in Sweden.

I get similar speeds from Sweden that this dude from japan is getting.

So, it´s not only the japanese store that´s fast.

The internet speeds in Japan is alot faster.

They pay probably 70-80 a month for 50+MB connections.

Suffice to say, just about anything downloads in Japan faster unless your leeching off a bypassed university connection.

You have to understand while the US will have to replace thousands of miles of backbone to increase residential speeds to that level, Japan has it alot easier with a smaller country. This is one of the reasons why the US is pushing for a better Wifi service. Eventually you will get higher speed broadband through Wifi.

The bigger the country, the harder it is to upgrade the internet backbone. On top of that, ISP companies choose not to since it cost them a fraction to maintain your connection then they lead you to believe. While they may charge you 30 bucks, it cost them less then half for them to run it.

» UK Broadband

is in for a couple of speed boosts, but untill BT starts to deliver fiber optic to the box down the road (not the exchange) we will still have slow internet.

» It took me...

less than 10 mins to download the Tekken 5:DR game. I live in Canada btw.

» Its from a proxy

You can do that by using the PS3 proxy. I doubt he is downloading it from the web, but via a proxy from PC to PS3 over a network.

You can change your internet settings on your PS3 to download from the PSN store via your PC. The proxy can sniff incoming and outgoing URLs, and replace .pkg files with those on your PC.

» qwest dsl 1.5mb is slow

I would not dare to download this file during the day with my qwest DSL in the Northwest, USA. Plus the PS store is even slower then my PC download speed. University have fairly fast connection, but I am done with school.

» what's ur connexion?

I live in Québec, Canada, and my connexion is a 3.2 Mgb/s so I download at about 350k/s MAX, and it cost me around 35$CAD ( 29$US ) for that! :'( Someone is Canada know a better offer? mine is with high speed bell. And I take it only because it have unlimitted download ( needed for torrents ). so phalanges, what is ur connection speed, do you pay more than me or should I change? lol, plz help, I just want to download fast ( and upload a LOT faster, since seeding at 75k/s is BAD and takes hours and hours to have a good ratio ) anyway, thanks

» If you get shaw...

You can get X-treme internet, which is 10mbps, or they just introduced Nitro, which is 24Mbps....some parts of Vancouver can get fibre optic...I'm just not sure if Shaw is in Quebec, but i'm sure they are, in montreal at least...

by Shatterdome - 2007-03-04 10:42
» No...

More likely he is on fibre optic, it runs from 100Mbps to 1Gbps....so 10megs a second to 100 megs a second.....

Nothing to do with cache...according to my calculation (using 110seconds, since they said just under 2 mins) He is only getting 4900k a second, which is less then a 50mbs connection...which I guess in Japan would actually be a *****ty connection...

» Wow u ppl r dum

R u ppl seriously dum...watch the video again, u can clearly see that he speeded up the video, the screen flashes 1000 times a second, and when hes clicking the download it opens up in like 1\2 a second when it takes like 5 seconds to load really. and on top of that i have a japanese account, THE WORDS ARE IN JAPANESE and they don't even have a full auto 2 demo!!!! QJ.net u ppl r jokers

» Wow u ppl r dum

Is this a fkn joke? U can clearly see he speeded up the video considering the screen is flashing 1000x a second, and to top that off the download opens and starts downloading in 1\2 a second meanwhile is takes 2-5 seconds. To top that off he din even record his voice while he was making the video, because theres no clicking because of moving the camera, plus the qualitys of the sound is too clear to be a video camera, i can do this so easy. And i have a japanese account, downloads are the same...and the descriptions are part Japanese and part english there is no Japanese in those descriptions, and plus Japan doesn't even have the Full Auto 2 demo, at least last time i checked it didn't have it. QJ.net u guys r a joke.

» look who's talking

He was probably using either the US or Canada store, just because he lives in Japan doesn't necessarily means he has to use the Japan PS Store. +P

by maclinux - 2007-03-04 19:22
» I wouldnt draw conclusions....

He was clearly talking about the speed of internet connection in Japan. He never said anything about having a japanese account.

Could it be that he's downloading off the US server but residing in Japan's fast connection to acquire him to download Full Auto 2 demo that isn't readily yet available in Japan's PSN servers?

And oh, judging by capture rate of his crappy camera based on the stutter shakey movements looks like its playing at a constant 15-20 fps. If he speed it up to an amazing value of 1000 times a second, wouldn't the playback rate be much much more smoother?

Just a thought...

I get fast speeds too if i use my pc.

by Axzs - 2007-03-05 03:22
» Wow you ppl r dum

Wow, you're dumb. The screen flickers because the video recorder can record a higher frame rate then what human eyes can. Every second, the screen is constantly refreshing much like FPS except it slides upwards instead of being processed and shown like a single image at a time.

Human eyes can see up to around 40 frames per second, video cameras can see higher thus they see the tears in the screen. Also, have considered the fact that he could be using a mouse? English isn't my first language, but at least I can spell better then you
