Doomsday prediction: 150 to 200 thousand PS3s for U.S. Launch

Controversy-riddenThere's already been a whole bunch of forecasts on the would-be sales of Sony's PS3. And while Sony's sure had its share of both optimistic and negative forecasts, this is definitely one that we oh-so would not want to happen. At all.

Lazard Capital Markets has boldly predicted that the U.S. may receive a lower number of units than expected on the day of the PS3's launch. Why is it bold? Because the launch is only two days away from now. How low are the numbers? A dreadful 150,000 to 200,000 unit, a definite huge drop from the promised 4000,000!

Colin Sebastian, a Lazard analyst, gave retail checks as the source for their cited figures. By the end of the year, their estimate is that Sony would have been able to sell around 750,000 PS3s in the U.S. he also pointed out that some form of substitution could happen, with Microsoft's Xbox 360 reaping the benefits. Because of the high-in-demand of the PS3 and Wii, some might just opt to go for the Xbox 360. This substitution effect may also be given a further boost by key Xbox 360 titles like Gears of War, as well as those cross-platform PS3-Xbox 360 titles.

Well, that certainly sounds like doomsday! Let's keep our fingers crossed tightly that Sony may prove them analysts wrong on this one! Puhlease, let them be wrong on this one!

» you got it all wrong

The 400,000 is still on track for the "North America Launch" Sony never promised 400,000 for the U.S.

How is it a supposed PS3-blog like this one chooses to put the worst spin on any news it posts about the system? Your summary of the article you linked to is flat out wrong - the only news there is how much of the 400K units are coming to the U.S. Yes, it'd be great if there were more, but nothing was lowered as you say because the U.S. numbers were NEVER given before now.

The 400K from a few weeks ago was the allocation for NORTH AMERICA, not the U.S. alone. Until proof otherwise is found out, you can't re-interpret something like that article to mean the U.S. lost units when we never knew how may of the 400K were coming to begin with.

Bad news is fine, but report it accurately and only when it actually happens.

» Supply and demand rules!

I pre-ordered a Japanese PS3 with Play Asia back in August no money down. On Nov. 10th I get an e-mail offering me one. HELL YEAH only $999 plus shipping for 60gb version. It shipped on the 11th and I'll be getting it before the U.S. launch. Thank god $ony hasn't sued Play Asia out of business like Lik Sang! I love my XBOX 360 and see no need whatsoever for a PS3 so it's off to ebay. Cha-Ching! $400-$1000 profit for doing no work whatsoever. XBOX 360 has a much more versatile processor and greater graphics potential anyway.

fony fanboys! how can you defend sony with only 200K units now coming to america?

» Analysts are retarded

Just like those other analysts who still stand by their prediction that the PS3 is selling for $900 on launch day.

» THIS IS CRAP!!!

yea, let me go to EB and preorder my PS3. Let me get the #8 reserve. Let me get sooo hyped with anticipation. Let me get excited about playing Resistance fall of man 40 players online. Let me go out and buy 10 blu ray movies. Let me go get my 1080p Westinghouse 37 inch monitor. THEN LET ME GET A CALL FROM MY GAMESTOP TELLING ME "WE ARE SORRY, WE WILL ONLY BE GETTING 6 SYSTEMS IN ON LAUNCH. YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR OUR NEXT SHIPMENT. BUT YOU CAN GET A FREE $19.99 GAME". this is crap. I cannot explain to you my ANGER at this moment. I am not a fanboy of any system as I own them all (well at least when the 2nd shipment comes in i will), BUT MICROSOFT I HOPE YOU KICK SONY'S JAPANESE @SSES. SOny this utter betrayal will not be forgiven. Well at least I have my Gears of War to console me.

» listen

they said 400k for NA not the US by itself.

Still not very many though, Sony is making that hill they have to climb (the 360) into a mountain.

If they don't counter this weak launch with a STRONG 2nd shipment then they are in trouble. It's pretty much the same as yielding 2 holiday seasons to MS. Actually thats not true, the wii will hurt the 360s sales this season... but you get my point.

Are you blind? Read the above posts. 400 000 is still coming to America. No one ever said United States. It's not the only country in America you know.

» Substitution effect

I have taken MANY economics courses. Consumers will substitute the ps3 with a 360. Sony is actually going to help sell more 360's than they will ever realize. The substitution effect is a proven economic theory. MS has 6 million systems out now. Why do you think that MS still predicts it will sell 10 million systems by year end?

by gg - 2006-11-15 09:53
» gg

I myself am a victim of this so called effect. EB cancelled my preorder for PS3 so the next day I went out and got a 360, Gears Of War, and Oblivion. I actually dont regret not getting the PS3 now because the 360 looks better graphically anyways than Ive seen in any of the ps3 screenshots or vids, especially GOW. I have converted to the dark side (and im loving it)!!

» yes

well, its a really funny effect,

just goes to show how easy people are manipulated

If people would really want a ps3, they wouldnt settle for anything less than a ps3

by datnizzle - 2006-11-15 10:20
» Really?

The same thing happened with XBOX360 you retard. they did not have enough to fill pre-orders and people had to wait for shipment 2.

"Utter betrayal", sony at least made an effort to limit preorders. M$ just let companies sell way too many preorders, where is your outrage, clown.

by Gamez - 2006-11-15 11:09
» Please get your facts right!

No analysts ever said the PS3 would SELL for $900, it was all the people who needed to brush up on their reading skills who thought they said that. The PS3 was said to cost $900 to MAKE. Big difference!

It was also reported here recently;

» do your math

so with all this talk about NORTH AMERICA getting 400,000 units and how it's spun the wrong way I'm a little confused, so the U.S. gets 200k units, which means that canada and mexico will get the other 200k units? while japan got 88,000?

face it sony lied.

by Hupperware - 2006-11-15 18:26
» Expect a 20% cutback just like Japan...

400,000 - 20% = 320,000 for North America. Expect 50,000 to go to the socialists from the North (Canada for those of you who aren't familiar with geography). That leaves 270,000 for the US and plenty of crying kids at Christmas.
