dolby logoPS3 will feature interactive Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound for games, Dolby Digital, and Dolby TrueHD for decoding up to 7.1 channels for Blu-ray movie playback. Sony says the Dolby-PS3 combination will kick open the next chapter of gaming and entertainment. Dolby Laboratories returned the love by saying people will be amazed  once they connect their PS3 to an audio/video receiver or home theater system. This makes the PS3 a real eye-and-ear candy!

The PS3 with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound and Dolby TrueHD will be available in Japan on November 11 and November 17 for North America.

» Question

Is a special reciever required to obtain the TrueHD sound or will it work fine with my old DD/DTS one?

» 5.1 for games

If it is capable of 7.1 sound, then why only 5.1 for games?

» 5.1

A Lot of people over the years have splased out on a 5.1 surround sound system, So i assume the industry has decided to not piss us off again by making stuff in 7.1 Only.

Anyway, I was hoping the PS3 would use both Dolby and DTS sound on games, I prefer DTS as it seems to have a better kick to it.

Dont quote me on this but i think that games will not use dolby true HD because of the load it would put on the cpu. As i said, do not quot me on that!

As for backward compatibility, yes current DD decoders will handle true HD stream but will only playback in DD 5.1, well thats what i heard from some techie over at the afterdawn forums. Anyways, the likely story will be that blu-ray flicks will contain both true hd and standard DD streams like dvd's contain multiple audio tracks.

Now here's a question id like answered. PS3 will playback SA-CD's, but how? I thought that SA-CD's will only output via analogue outputs or i'link. If thats the case, how the hell will that work for PS3? It wont work via toslink so will it output via HDMI? Then again, wouldnt that not jepordise the copy protection scheme meaning that if an exploit is found, 1:1 digital copies could be made via HDMI, somthing that sony tried to avoid by originally making it analogue only so only downsamples copy's were possible, defeating the purpose of high def audio.

This one has been confusing me for a while now!
