"Does MotorStorm gameplay meet its target render?"

Ask that question about Sony's dirty off-road racer to GameTrailers, and GameTrailers will respond with their side-by-side comparison of current MotorStorm gameplay with the trailers Sony showed off during E3, and let you be the ranting, l337-speak judges. So, does it meet its target render?

The gameplay renders are quite sharp, no doubt, especially when you drill down past the cars and to the terrain, however, the gameplay vid's obviously a different animal from the E3 teaser, as the colors in the gameplay are quite vivid compared to the subdued, sun-bleached palettes of the E3 target render vid. There isn't much dust cloud effects in the gameplay, although (A) we don't know if that much dust choking the game's air was the intention of the devs at any point in time, despite the trailer, and (B) we don't know if dust thick enough to choke your sight of the game's a wise idea anyway.

But then, the final gameplay product always tends to be different from pre-rendered concepts, and that's all we can honestly say about the side-by-sider from GT. Anything else, and that would be pure opinion on our part. But what do you guys think?

» Well

Well obviously no game looks like their rendered partner, but motorstorm certainly has the same feel as the rendered images.

reason why rendered images look so good is because its staged, every crash, every acceleration, every vehicle is staged. Gameplay on the other hand is a natural thing so it looks worse.

just shows how pesticide on food is better than organic.

» nope

lol i don't think anyone is going to be stupid and say they look the same. Now I would like to see how it looks on my standerd TV.

by Vecha - 2006-12-01 15:30
» huh?

the GRAPHICS are different.

no matter how I CRASh the car the GRAPHICS will remain the same.

The rendere one is way different...sony and microsoft love to lie to us. PERIOD!

ps3 suckz for this, they actually made ppl think that the games wud actually look good....who were they foolin

» umm yea

i played it for a while and it was fun for being what it was, it looked alright but nothing impressive or that would make me say "this is like uber times 10 the xbox 360" but i mean it just wasn't all that great. i'd probabaly buy it if i had a ps3 but oh well.

also the SIXASIS controls for the game are weak.. i mean the turning for it was horrible.. stick with joysticks when it comes to racing.. or a wheel for that matter.

» Target Renders on the PS1 and PS2

were met/surpassed within 4 years, so we'll what happens with the PS3. The game looks better than any other racer, and it's extremely impressive once you get your hands on it. Doesn't match the E3 05 trailer obviously, but I'd love to see them get closer with each iteration.

» Motorstorm comes pretty damn close

So shut the ***** up and stop complaining.

by MDN360 - 2006-12-01 16:08
» this is gay

i played it at walmart and the graphics were choppy and terrible. Nothing even close to the rendered trailer.

by Kunai - 2006-12-01 16:11
» Hmm...

Yeah, it's a little disappointment, but hey, the game still looks awesome! Im defenently getting it when it's released in Europe.

» remember madden

remember how EA said how madden was supposedly going to look like next with their render in the promo, tell me now if they even got close to it no ofcourse the real gameplay will never actually come close to the target render but it motorstorms it did in some aspect's of the game.

by gazm - 2006-12-01 16:27
» wow

and what game's render does look like the game thats released a year later? Also, who said that was game play footage, and when doesn't an intro look worst than game play

by Shek - 2006-12-01 16:44
» welp

Well...I can certianly see a difference...just like whenever Killzone 2 comes out, and it looks like crap compared to the E3 render, you guys will see the difference in that...

Oh yeah, just take a look at E3 Warhammer from like a year back and look at it now...they completely ruined it. Made it all cartoony.

take all the stars away from this post...could care less, but I speak the truth.

» Common guys

Ok, we all realize that it could not meet the trailer, but let's be fair to Evolution Studios. First of all, it looks amazing, and anyone who says it looks like crap at the stores obvioulsy saw it being played on a crappy monitor (even if its hi-def, ive seen great looking games look mediocre because of a poor moniter). Second of all, that was a really tough target, anyone can surpass an unimpressive target, but to set the bar that high, can come that close, is amazing. Finally, i believe in the interview they had with IGN, they said that the second Motorstorm would pretty much include everything in the trailer that the games currently lacks (improved particle effects, graphics etc etc) which i think can be done, or come extremly close to being done. Btw, it's nice to be able to put in a comment about something without having to be a member. Props to the website guys.

» whaa?

um.... did we play the same game? no choppiness when i played. since i dont have a "next-gen" console yet, i thought the graphics were beautiful.

by anonymoose - 2006-12-01 17:39
» biggest problem...

the biggest problem here seems to be that they use too much of the same textures for the ground, The render has very realistic looking non repeating ground, where the actuall game is too much of the same dirt textures used over and over, Add some more foliage, and a smarter texture system and zoom in and it will look quite similar!

Also the sky is too dark, lighten it up and the game a bit to get the original feel back

the render is obviously better for character movement, and staged crashes, but resolution looks very similar

» expectations are too high

First of all thank you blogger.... this is the first blog I have read that had a level of maturity (as in leaving the opinions to the person reading). So thank you and keep that attitude up. Second, this game is a launch title. I wouldn't expect anything from a launch title. This console is just warming up. Wait a few years, we've already seen MGS in action.

» missing the point

many of you are forgetting the point..

not the trailer.. but the TARGET RENDER

the footage that sony showed saying "hey this is what the game is going to look like"

sony missed the mark on this that is all

by Figboy - 2006-12-01 18:42
» pretty damn good actually

i've played the Motorstorm Demo on my standard def TV, and it looks pretty damn amazing, to be honest.

one of my concerns was that you would need an HDTV to see a difference in current gen and next game gaming, but i was wrong.

Resistance, Motorstorm, NBA 2K7 all look great on a standard def TV.

by nanoware - 2006-12-01 20:58
» whhhh $$%^$&$^&*^%$$^&(**&^%$#@

ok to the guy that said the madden doesnt look nothing like the one ea purposed. First of all, they wanted a madden launch game, so the madden 07 for ps3 u see on the shelves is basicly the xbox 360 version. It was rushed. Next years version should be a big improvement. And for the motor storm issue... i personally have downloaded the "DEMO" and i was pretty dam impressed. Being able to look that good on a 480i tv, i got to give them props. Sure the graffics look dam good in the e3 trailer. But remember, thats what it was, a trailer. And what it boils down to is the game play. For having just one course, its pretty dam fun, the demo that is. And the Tilt controls are awesome, but need a few tweaking, and i think its an awesome idea. I pretty much got th hang of it. I just cant wait for it to come out. I pretty much think its perfect , i could only imagine how the end product is going to be like. Also the DolbyDigital 5.1 surround sound is really amazing, the old experience ive had in surround sound gaming is Dolby Pro Logic. This is a whole new experience. So i would say, until you acually play the god dam *****ing game, quit your *****cing *****ing. Becaue at the end of the day all that matters is the gameplay, sure this combination of words is cliched, but its the *****ing truth. Now all you 360 fans, go boil an egg over your console, and you wii loosers go get some exercise!

by Gamez - 2006-12-01 23:54
» Actually...

...there were no target renders for the Playstation or PS2 games prior to launch. Everything shown was running in realtime, so of course it should be possible to match or surpass them in games or realtime cutscenes years later.

Pre-rendered target renders are a completely different issue, and therefore you can't assume they will be matched in future.

The realtime PS2 demos such as the 'Rige Racer Girl' the 'Final Fantasy dance' can be seen again here;

http://www.gameklip.com/v/74/

The dinosaur demo on the original Playstation was also realtime.

» aa

Sony promises and fails to deliver all the time, get used to it.

by Gamez - 2006-12-02 00:19
» Let me guess...

...you were one of those who thought it was realtime at E3 2005. ;)

by Gamez - 2006-12-02 00:52
» Nope...

..and this was the problem at E3 2005.

Gamers were amazed at Killzone and Motorstorm, because both were presented as if they were realtime. However, those with common sense knew straight away that these two trailers were pre-rendered (sorry, but I had to say that), but a large number of gamers and reporters didn't seem to understand that.

So whenever asked whether these games were realtime, people like Sony's Phil Harrison and Jack Tretton would NEVER give a straight answer of 'yes' or 'no' in interviews, but instead would ramble on and on without give a definative answer. In otherwords, they were happy for the confusion because of the publicity it gave to the PS3 throughout the rest of 2005! It was deceiptful, but who cares, it's the publicity that counts, right?

As a result, after E3 2005 and right up until the early part of this year, you could not suggest Killzone or MotorStorm were pre-rendered without being attacked by hoards and hoards of PS fanboys, who would present evidence such as this;

Jack Tretton on PS3 and Killzone at E3 2005; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v+Jt5ZBsr_p9A

(Note, if the link says "... v+Jt5ZBsr_p9A", change the + character to the equals character)

And for Motorstorm, go here;

http://www.control-freaks.tv/

Wait for the ad to finish then select 'Search', enter Motorstorm, and watch Evolution's deceipt at work! ;)

Today on forums, it seems everyone always knew Killzone and Motorstorm were pre-rendered, no-one ever thought they were realtime. ;)

by Gamez - 2006-12-02 01:15
» Hmmm...^^^

Again the equals character has been changed to +.

Doesn't anyone else have this problem posting links?

by hmm - 2006-12-02 03:44
» if that is so

damn more promises less delivery im gonna wait till the ps3 is around 350 bucks then ill buy it. i dont understand the point on sitting on a console that is so expensive and barely any games and constantly being promised games thats delayed or fall short of expectations. mwahahah ill get my ps3 bundled with ff13 and mgs which is prob gonna be a year from now.

by 2k1yellows2k - 2006-12-02 03:47
» So what.

The trailers get you excited for the game. It's merely a cg movie designed to make you want to buy it and play it.

I have a year old Sony 26" lcd that supports 720p and 1080i, but not 1080p. This game looks so good in 720p that it's rediculous. The first time I played the pre-PS3 release demo in Target, I immediately said that the 360's graffics doesn't even come close, even if there was a small bit of choppyness at the start of the race.

To me, this game is amazing and I will be buying it on release date. I'm just upset that I'll be waiting so long for my beloved GT5...

by PlayerONE - 2006-12-02 04:24
» Motorstorm looks fun but please...

...it's not THAT good graphically, and to say 360 graphics doesn't come close is a joke.

Better looking games have been previewed on both the PS3 and 360 and there are games out now like GoW on the 360 which blow it away (yeh different genre I know).

Have fun playing Motorstorm when it arrives, but please, it's nothing amazing, but is a lot of fun.

by dude - 2006-12-02 04:24

MetalGearSolid4 looks great now and will look like that when released....too bad Motorstorm didn't make it.

well you pittiful xbox 360 gamers you really are wanting your miniscule minds to believe that the ps3 cant render the type of graphics in the e3 05 trailer but the truth is that it can go up and over that you see developers cant figure this super computer out yet as it so happens their is one developer that is familiure with the systems full archietecture and that is guerillia games now they have resurfaced and they have stated that killzone 2 is in the works they have also stated that some aspects of the game have alread surpassed the trailer they said they would not show the game until it exeeds gamers expectations you know you xbox 360 gamers are really beggining to get on my nerves you think that ps3 can't really render the graphics you have no idea what you are talking about you are forgeting these are japanese people were dealing with U.S. has never been smarter than them think about it this is the first time games have been developed for a super computer think about it why can't you suck up the inferioriety of the wack box 360 you keep trying to say that the 360 is equal in power to the ps3 but you are forgeting that the ps3's specs have never changed but you are right wack box 360(2) + something else will equal the system power of the ps3 remember PS3 2.16 tflops>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>wack box 360 just give it some time and sony will show all you fools that the ps3 will go up and over the graphical showcasing of e3 05 way over oh and at e3 05 the hardware wasn't ps3's actual hardware but it was to spec but not quite you see the graphic chip was incomplete and they said the graphic chip would get stronger when complete and they said the trailer was only the tip of the iceburg for ps3's graphical abillities it will not be matched suck it up motorstorm if the developers new how to use the hardware correctly like guerilla games this game would also go even beyond the e3 05 trailer in game with ease and yet the ps3 super computer would run extremely quiet unlike the vacum cleaner you know as 360 because ps3 has no limits and no boundaries even after this next generation is up ps3 will still have more graphics to go and wont stop wackbox 360 has already maxed out with gears of war sorry haters but wake up from your dream ps3 will deliver more than anyone can imagine wait and see it's way to early to judge launch games and little demoes of motor storm the demo is a prototype that will reach beyond the e3 trailer. thanks for your time............... I love my ps3

They are not even slightly close. ITs like night and day. And if we remeber correctly, Sony didnt say it was prerendered at E3. Thank god Sony has sheep like you, who beleves all there lies and will buy all there crap.

Counter what? Is anyone reading this? I skimmed it becasue its just a huge run on sentance. His first two lines sum it all up. FANBOY. He still beleves that the pre rendered cgi could be achieved on the PS3. Hahaha. He also still beleves in the 2 TFLop performance. hahaha.

I love how now, everyone knew it was pre rendered, and it was a target. FFS, the majority of PS3 fanboys wre defending these as real time..But now you all knew it was just a target. Pathetic. Sonys lucky to have fans like you. Man this thread is funny. Sony fanboys trying to save face. haha

» Hey!?

There is something people seem to miss here. This comparison is not entirely accurate. This is NOT the final game as everyone seems to think. For one thing there are many other tracks and environments that have only appeared in footage briefly on Eurogamer TV behind the scenes, further this is the demo. Although I think most demos are pretty much what the game will look like, there are lots of reasons to believe that is not entirely accurate in this case. Each new demo (E3, TGS, Gamer Day, PNP download) have looked much better than their predecessors. Wait a few days (its out in Japan as of this writing) for someone to post true video off the actual game disk before talking.
