DoA's Itagaki: Heavenly Sword is "half-assed"

Now that we all know what Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki thinks of Tekken, here comes another news tidbit that tells us what he thinks of another noteworthy video game: Ninja Theory's Heavenly Sword. Itagaki-san offers a few choice words about the epic game:

I've never played a good game where the developers put a big icon of the button you're supposed to press onscreen... I look at Heavenly Sword and it seems really half-assed, because it's asking you to do all these button-timing sequences but you are not getting much payoff from it.

While it's not as succinct as his "Tekken sucks" quote, it delivers quite the same blow. Ninja Theory's Kyle Shubel, however, has a few words of his own to shove at Itagaki's way:

My response to Mr. Itagaki would be that the intent of the Hero sequences is to empower the player to experience events that would be nearly impossible to play in a natural platforming state... for example, making the player run down ropes, leaping from rope to rope as they're being cut from underneath you, all while dodging other objects Â— that would be a frustrating experience to 99 percent of our users if we were to force them to do that manually.

With most gaming developers and producers giving bland regards and salutations to each other, it certainly is refreshing to find them turning to Hollywood from time to time to liven up the gaming news. Maybe we'll get to see some of them in future Jerry Springer shows.

Must be frustrating looking up at others all the time. His comment about the gameplay seems to based on the demo, so that's not much to go on. I think he should move along and maybe look at what he himself is doing to make the gaming community better. Ie, nothing.

Like everyone else, he is entitled to an opinion. I dont think that Tomonobu Itagakis opinion on games like Tekken and a demo of heavenly sword will affect a lot of PS3 owners decision, not my decison anyway.

All I have to say back to Mr. Tomonobu Itagaki is good luck to your sexual harrassment lawsuit.

Since the PS3 is last right now on console sales Tomonobu Itagaki will not be all that nice to the PS3 as he has hitorically preferred consoles who are currently on the top of the Market.

Actually, running down a rope and jumping off when they're about to be cut actually sounds pretty damn lame. Kinda sounds like Megaman 1, Gutsman stage. Anyone who enjoyed doing those gay 'jump off platform in time or die a horrible death' things are retarded.

At least with the keypresses, they can make the sequence actually look good.

i cant believe he's actually criticizing tekken and heavenly sword. this is all coming from a guy that designed doa, the most shallow fighting game ever. i totally agree with the other posts saying re4 included button pressing and i especially like that one interactive cutscene where you needed to tap buttons to avoid a boulder rolling you over and having to jump to the side. it's much better than just watching the character do it himself. this guy should just keep making his half-assed games for his beloved horny 360 fans and shut the fuuck up.

Oh, by the way, anything you can record in your HD Recorder, you CANNOT OWN, only rent for a while. And, as for the 360's download service, after download, it only allows you to keep it for 14 days, and once you've started playback, the download expires within 24 hours. So are you saying an HD experience that you can't own for more than 24 hours is better than an HD experience that you can own and keep with you?

some how the sports take the biggest hit for it,but look at something like Zelda,what changed since the n64 game? GTa3 and it's followups are the same.Halo and every FPS game out there plays about the same.

doesn't resident evil 4 run off the megaman legends engine? (or omishua or whatever it's called) dead rising and lost planet sure do run off megaman legends engine.

so basically the foundations that were laid down in the 32/64bit era are still be redone today with better graphics.

the only games to come along that do something different is wii sports.

Dead rising and lost panet aren't run off the megaman legends engine, but more like they designed a NEW engine that they could possibly use for the next Megaman legends...

RE4 doesn't use the same engine either. AFAIK, its a brand new one (definitely not Onimusha's)

But you're right... games haven't changed much over the years (not that its a bad thing) and those 2 Fanbots just want to ***** about everything the ps3 does, thats all..

This guy has finally completely fallen off his rocker, and needs to shut it. DoA is all right, but doesn't compare to Tekken, or Soul Calibur. The spin-off DoA games (Beach Volleyball and the like) don't even need mentioning, everyone with a brain knows those games suck hard. If you're that into breasts just go to the beach and stare, no need to waste $60 and endure the torture that is DoA Volleyball gameplay.

Dude, take a chill pill... I didn't say Halo sucked... All I said was that its not any more different from its predecessors (after all, if it were wildly different it wouldn't be HALO). My commentary is based on MCS being an idiot fanbot who has double standards. As a member of the industry, he should respect his colleagues enough to not belittle them publicly. All views of the game aside and especially console wars aside, these comments were way out of line. Im no fan of Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Soul Caliber or any fighting games to be honest, but Im sure as *****, they're all better than DoA in every way.

As for Ninja Gaiden.. I downloaded the demo and deleted it without finishing it. I played the Heavenly Sword demo many times and loved it every time.

Regardless of anyone's views on these boards, mine included, this guy needs a serious kick in the balls and few slices of humble pie
