DoA's Itagaki: Heavenly Sword is "half-assed"

Tomonobu Itagaki - Image 1Now that we all know what Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki thinks of Tekken, here comes another news tidbit that tells us what he thinks of another noteworthy video game: Ninja Theory's Heavenly Sword. Itagaki-san offers a few choice words about the epic game:

I've never played a good game where the developers put a big icon of the button you're supposed to press onscreen... I look at Heavenly Sword and it seems really half-assed, because it's asking you to do all these button-timing sequences but you are not getting much payoff from it.

While it's not as succinct as his "Tekken sucks" quote, it delivers quite the same blow. Ninja Theory's Kyle Shubel, however, has a few words of his own to shove at Itagaki's way:

My response to Mr. Itagaki would be that the intent of the Hero sequences is to empower the player to experience events that would be nearly impossible to play in a natural platforming state... for example, making the player run down ropes, leaping from rope to rope as they're being cut from underneath you, all while dodging other objects — that would be a frustrating experience to 99 percent of our users if we were to force them to do that manually.

With most gaming developers and producers giving bland regards and salutations to each other, it certainly is refreshing to find them turning to Hollywood from time to time to liven up the gaming news. Maybe we'll get to see some of them in future Jerry Springer shows.

Like the creator of DoA has the right to say anything to anyone about anything they've created. The man is obviously a mesogynist..

Frankly his work should be AO rated and pulled off shelves. It should also be renamed "We dont care about anything but huge tits".

Must be frustrating looking up at others all the time. His comment about the gameplay seems to based on the demo, so that's not much to go on. I think he should move along and maybe look at what he himself is doing to make the gaming community better. Ie, nothing.

That sounds like it would be really fun to do in regular gameplay. Too bad the developers half assed it and had you doing timed button presses to a non-interactive video instead. Since the PS3 is more of a video player, I guess the game is showing off all the PS3 can do though.

God of War was a good game, but why couldn't they at least try to offer anything new? Isn't this supposed to show off what next gen is all about? Wow prettier graphics and a hot chick main character. Doesn't hide the fact you're still playing a PS2 grade game.

STFU, really, did you like God of War? I would assume so since nearly everyone did. This game > God of War. Why? A WAY WAY more advanced fighting system, with motion control in the fight, and aftertouch, a 15 HOUR game, I could really go on and on. To believe you are convinced of the status of PS3 simply by the fact that 1/10th of the demo had buttons presses, shows your lack of "Common Sense"

your a fkin idiot, dont think of the sequences in heavenly sword to be half assed, its more of an interactive cut-scene, most other games only let you sit and watch, this lets you become more involved rather then just sit back and watch it happen, and baggin a "PS2 grade game"? not fkin ***** its a PS2 grade game, for one its on the PS2.... what did you expect? and @ Mr. Itagaki, i kno resident evil 4 was an awsome game with sequences and cut scenes in which you interact with just like heavenly sword, i got ninja gaiden sigma and i look forward to heavenly sword more cause sigma lacked in a good story/characters and is full of lame enemy's and *****ty script writing.

Like everyone else, he is entitled to an opinion. I dont think that Tomonobu Itagakis opinion on games like Tekken and a demo of heavenly sword will affect a lot of PS3 owners decision, not my decison anyway.

All I have to say back to Mr. Tomonobu Itagaki is good luck to your sexual harrassment lawsuit.

Since the PS3 is last right now on console sales Tomonobu Itagaki will not be all that nice to the PS3 as he has hitorically preferred consoles who are currently on the top of the Market.

Actually, running down a rope and jumping off when they're about to be cut actually sounds pretty damn lame. Kinda sounds like Megaman 1, Gutsman stage. Anyone who enjoyed doing those gay 'jump off platform in time or die a horrible death' things are retarded.

At least with the keypresses, they can make the sequence actually look good.

Also, lets not forget Resident Evil 4.

But, he did say that 'he's never played a good game" so... he's just a sheathed retard who can't see past his horrible DOA series. Talking half assedness, he took an old game, which was already remade and presented it with some graphic upgrades as his contrubtion to the next gen. Cuz fu_k knows DOA is a recycled POS fanservice crapfest.

The XBOX 360 plays HD movies right out of the box as long as you have a hard drive. Ever heard of the movie download service?

That's assuming you didn't do the smart thing and get satelite TV service with a HD recorder. It's not like you can see any movie you want in blu gay anyway. I'm loving recording FREE HD movies.

You sure are starting to sound like a sore loser, MCS. You actually resorted to using the pejorative "blu-gay" like a 12-year-old. Are you sure you are doing this for fun, or are you just worried about your investment? Or maybe you have just invested too much of your pride in a 360, which is why you can't see past the end of your nose.

Oh, by the way, anything you can record in your HD Recorder, you CANNOT OWN, only rent for a while. And, as for the 360's download service, after download, it only allows you to keep it for 14 days, and once you've started playback, the download expires within 24 hours. So are you saying an HD experience that you can't own for more than 24 hours is better than an HD experience that you can own and keep with you?

So you like watching the same movie over and over again?

I watch a movie once, and if it's good, maybe one more time. That's it. Why pay $30 for that? I get 2 months HBO for that price. There's so few movies I want to see released on blu ray or HD-DVD, getting any player at this point is stupid. When I go into wal-mart and see the blu ray selection, there's about 10 movies to choose from. Does that make the PS3's blu ray player worth it?

I wouldn't doubt this game is half assed, because most PS3 games are. Nothing but PS2 games with better graphics. Take a game like motorstorm. I've played so many superior PS2 off road racing games, just with lower graphical quality. They can do split screen 2 player racing on launch PS2 games (even running at the same framerate) but not motorstorm for some reason. Explain that.

You have to wait until mid 2008 for full assed games, and there's only a few.

" So you like watching the same movie over and over again?"

+> Yes I do. Anything wrong with that? I've several movies (Lord Of The Rings Extended Versions, Star Wars, Batman Begins, Back To The Future, Contact, etc) that I've seen several times. Apparently, a large portion of the movie-going public feels the same, judging from sales of DVDs.

"I watch a movie once, and if it's good, maybe one more time."

+> Well there's owners and then there are renters like you. Doesn't mean your is the golden standard for enjoying movies, the yardstick by which all movie-buffs must be measured.

"There's so few movies I want to see released on blu ray or HD-DVD"

+> Agreed. There aren't very many movies out there yet. But they are steadily increasing, and at a faster pace on Blu-ray than HD-DVD, if I may say so.

"When I go into wal-mart and see the blu ray selection, there's about 10 movies to choose from. "

+> Well, the Walmart I go to has a minimum of 26 movies, and increasing each week (at the same time, HD-DVD has stayed nearly constant, starting at 11 movies and right now it's 13). Yes, I counted as I don't like to make half-assed comments with figures pulled out of my ass, the way you do.

"Does that make the PS3's blu ray player worth it?"

+> From where I'm standing, yep it does. Doesn't mean I go all-out to defend every single thing about the PS3. You, on the other hand, will blindly defend everything 360 and bash everything PS3.

"I wouldn't doubt this game is half assed, because most PS3 games are."

+> Thus spoke the great unbiased reviewer MCS ... NOT! You would be the last person in the world that ANYBODY should go to for an unbiased PS3 games review. I do remember you mentioning in a post of yours (If I remember correctly, it was on the UPDATE: PS Firmware 1.90 topic) that you hated people commenting on a game that wasn't released yet, and here it looks like you are doing the same, and for ALL PS3 games in one shot! Biased little fanboy!

"They can do split screen 2 player racing on launch PS2 games (even running at the same framerate) but not motorstorm for some reason. Explain that."

+> I can't. I don't know the reasons why they chose not to add that. Do you? Or will you come up with just some more of your half-assed remarks and try to pass them off as the reasons?

"You have to wait until mid 2008 for full assed games, and there's only a few."

+> Well, if you want to compare, FEW 360 games are truly great as well. Sure it has lots of games. Quantity doesn't always mean quality though. I'm not saying that all PS3 games are great, but try and remember that you said that YOU HATE people commenting on the quality of unreleased games. So why are you commenting on games that won't be coming out for another year? Hypocrite!

Anything else?

By the way, anything else you can throw at me, I can refute or answer (and unlike you, if I'm wrong, I'll accept it as well) as I respond with facts, and not with bias like you.

AoxomamoxoA

-----------

You done with your single site review of Lair yet? Let's wait for September when it comes out, shall we? By the way, I'm sure, if I scan hundreds of gaming sites, I CAN come across a couple which say Halo 3's demo sucks. That doesn't necessarily make it the truth. But I doubt an immature kid like you would be able to comprehend what is fact and what is bias.

some how the sports take the biggest hit for it,but look at something like Zelda, what changed since the n64 game? GTa3 and it's followups are the same.Halo and every FPS game out there plays about the same.

doesn't resident evil 4 run off the megaman legends engine? (or omishua or whatever it's called) dead rising and lost planet sure do run off megaman legends engine.

so basically the foundations that were laid down in the 32/64bit era are still be redone today with better graphics.

the only games to come along that do something different is wii sports.

MCS is an idiot. He harps on about how Halo 3 will be sooooo soooo great (even though its Halo 2.5) and then *****es about how Heavenly sword is not next gen...

"Wow prettier graphics" - Hello, Halo 3 is essentially the same game with prettier graphics...

Seriously, its like he has two standards,

one when it comes to the PS3 (whereby nothing can please him);

and one for the 360 (whereby he is happy with the same game but with prettier graphics) which doesn't "show off what next gen is all about"

This is what being a fanbot is all about...

What you say is KIND of true... but not completely... But thanks for proving that MCS/Assmoxa are idiots for expecting radical change from "next gen" that even their "oh so beloved" 360 can't produce.

Dead rising and lost panet aren't run off the megaman legends engine, but more like they designed a NEW engine that they could possibly use for the next Megaman legends...

RE4 doesn't use the same engine either. AFAIK, its a brand new one (definitely not Onimusha's)

But you're right... games haven't changed much over the years (not that its a bad thing) and those 2 Fanbots just want to ***** about everything the ps3 does, thats all..

8. PGR 4

9. Banjo Kazoie 3

10. Lost Odyssey

11. Blue dragon (you can't say they aren't great consol games, as they come from the creator of YOUR most successful franchize)

12. RE 5

13. SH 5

14. DMC 4
