DIY tutorial: increase your PS3's harddisk capacity by replacing it |
Ó
Even with the release of Sony's 80GB PlayStation 3 console, sometimes 80GB of hard disk space isn't enough to satisfy all the downloading delights some of us have. There's a solution to this, however. CNET Asia's James Yu has come up with a very useful DIY tutorial on how to increase the HDD capacity of your PS3.Yu mentions that the PS3's hard disk is compatible with just about any 2.5-inch SATA notebook hard disk. What's important is that you get the right size to fit into the 2.5-inch drive tray of your console. As for storage capacity, he recommends going for any of the big HDD sizes ranging from 120GB to as high as 250GB.
If you have any existing data on your PS3's hard disk, don't forget to back it up using either an external storage device or copy selected files in the XMB. Don't forget to format the new hard disk you want to install under FAT32 since that's the file format system that the PS3 recognizes.
Everything after that is pretty much the usual handyman job with a Philips-head screwdriver and some screws. For a more detailed explanation of the tutorial complete with pictures, you can take a look at it through CNET Asia, accessible through the Via link below.

ehh, everybody knows that you can change the HDD.
Besides, it is even described in the manual........
Is there a maximum capacity drive I can fit to my PS3? Been looking into it but cannot find any info
yea well its still useful to all the new ps3 owners
The max is whatever the FAT32 file system supports. 8TB. The max single-file size is 4GB.
yeh some people probs havent read the manual i recently upgraded my 20gb to 160gb it waqs only about £50.
coz right now im constantly having to delete those HD comercials/trailers everytime a new demo arrives(60gig)

is it just me, or are they just copy pasting articles from blog.us.playstation.com
i think i'll upgrade when they start having decent downloads, i mean the demos are nice and some of the videos are good but untill they have some shows or movies my 60gb will work just fine. as for my own stuff i just use media server to stream all my music movies and pictures.
Anyone know if RPM would affect load times from HDD games? Or is it restricted to less complicate things? >_>;
