Divnich: LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2 won't pull in casual gamers like Xbox 360 price cut will |
Ó
Analyst Jesse Divnich gives another two cents to the holiday predictions pile.Like last time, he predicts doom and gloom for the PlayStation 3 this Christmas season, saying that as great as Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet are, they just can't beat the appeal of a cheap Xbox 360.
We could begin to see a considerable amount of potential PS3 owners, who may be waiting for a PS3 price cut, to choose the Xbox 360 over the PS3.
While we have no doubts that titles like Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet
will drive the core gaming market to purchase a PS3, we do, however,
have doubts that either title will lure in casual and mainstream
gamers.
The $399 price point is simply too steep to entice the casual and mainstream markets, regardless of how great Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet may be.
Moreover, Divnich believes that the Gears of War 2 Xbox 360 SKU will be Microsoft's spearhead for the holidays.
Both predictions aren't all that surprising. Considering what the release of the original Gears of War and Halo 3 did for Xbox 360 sales, Gears of War 2 may very well pull off the same. And if the current sales boost of the 360 in Japan is any indication of how well a price cut does for the console, the PS3 may be in deep doodoo very soon.
Still, considering how much of a success the LittleBigPlanet Beta is, I'm inclined to disagree with Divnich when he says that the game will fail to lure in casual gamers.

I sold my 360 after I realised it was unreliable and that every decent game it had played better on my PC costing less per game. Sure enough it broke months after I sold it to friend.
I think the only thing they got right was the controller, which Sony also got right, but then apparently hardcore fans complained and to cut a story short the back triggers suck and the analogue sticks are harder to use, but otherwise blueray rocks and so do the more unique games that I can't get on the pc. Graphically they're still keeping up with new PC games too for the most part.
If you want what the 360 offers, buy a cheap PC. It'll pay off very quickly as you buy games and you'll get a lot more out of it.
Its just one month of the year yet this guy still think competition and doesnt think about after the Holidays
What happened to Pachter? His crystal ball broken? These guys kill me! And his opinion is based on what, market research?
I can get paid for this crap! Make up stuff and call myself an analyst! And it seems you don't have to be right either!
Pachter probably got fired for being wrong 90+ percent of the time!
Sony will not be able to meet demand for PS3 units this XMAS. They are forecasting that their supply will satisfy 80-90% of demand, but all their inventory are spoken for already.
So why would they cut the price when they're already sold out? People (this guy in particular) need to stop and think about how merchandising actually works before they start making these claims.
The unique thing about LittleBigPlanet is that it will continue to bolster the PS3 for at least the next year and beyond...not like most games which are hot at first but get forgotten really fast.
yeah dude i agree that LBP is going to satisfy the ps3 users not only for this year BUT for next year and possibly further...
this game has unlimited potential, and thats wut makes the game a long lasting future product, unlike gears or halo 3 or any others out there for 360-tho's games are really great for the start and possibly a good 4 months (if that).. its gets critisizm and consumers to fall away fast.
but LPB has a long lasting effect on the ps3 crowd, enuf to draw the Wii ad 360 users into it as well.
+ LBP apeals to a HUGE crowd as GeoW has limited amount of consumer playability.
anywho,i also think resistance wil do some moving as well (mainly do to multilayer content),but not nearly as much as LBP.
oh and BTW GeoW and Esspecially halo 3 developed ALOT more critisizm then Risistance or about anyother ps3 exclusive (eccept HAZE).
Since when were LBP and Resistance supposed to appeal to casual gamers? When?
Well, LBP is a casual game. But yeah, R2 is not. Also, how the hell is the 360 price cut a casual gamer thing? The price cut will affect all types of gamers.
There HE goes again.....
the fanboy under the analysts...
Don't listen to HIM, he's always talking trash about the PS3.
If you don't believe me, click on his name, you will see all articles with him.
Only buy wiis so this whole argument is invalid
Well in a way the guy that writes the article is right. Casual gamers are heavily persuaded by price, or at least more-so than the more hardcore crowd.... but there are tens of millions of people that own Playstation 2's that don't own PS3's yet. Games like this(especially a friendly family game like LBP) may be what push people over the edge to finally upgrade. And if these games are at the quality level that they're touted to be, I'm sure they will catch the eyes of some 360 gamers as well, especially if they're reviewed at a high level.
No it probably won't make as big of a dent as the 360 price cut will(especially with the economy tightening people's pocket books), but Sony seems to be very happy with how many units they're selling, and games like this definately can't hurt.
But I have both, and my 360 definitely sees more use, even for games I own on both systems. Just something about sitting on a big sofa or chair and playing games with a simple gamepad. PC games are too much of a hassle most of the time, unless it's a game you really want to play, and you're PC isn't a POS. I have to bother with installing the game, messing with the settings/controls to get it to run good, and then usually deal with a plethora of errors. Like missing textures/meshes in Oblivion, or RAM running low in STALKER, or god damn Crysis getting 20 FPS on medium settings even tho I have a top of the line PC. GRRRR CRYSIS
360, just insert disc, play
But if you do go thru all of that on the PC, it's usually worth it.
Only thing I don't agree with is that last line, you aren't going to get what the 360 offers without sinking at least $800 into a PC, and that's not exactly "cheap". Try playing Mass Effect or Bioshock on anything that costs less. You won't enjoy it
either of those titles may be, pricing is what sells consoles to the casual crowd. Not brand loyalty... and not which games the console MIGHT get exclusive rights to....
Price.
If consoles ALL looked and did the same thing, then yeh he is right. Brand is enough to distort his idea of price influence on market alone.
He has to question if MS have made an attractive looking console. Are they any good in quality? Lots of games dont usually influence casuals since they buy whatevers available on shelves. I can only be certain myself that 360 will be popular for clueless parents buying for 8-10yr olds. every1 already has gear1 has 360
Wii has earnt itself mass appeal with "motion sense". so that accounts for majority. They cant get enough of it.
Playstation has that reputation from last gen. And thats a BIG reputation. No 8-10 yr olds since they probably too young for a PS2. Only those who lived with PS2 in their lives will be up 4 a PS3. 12-18 yrs old and beyond perhaps.
Wii is a definitive 1st.
