You guys are obviously familiar with those cheezy moments in action flicks where the hero tries to diffuse the bomb, and he's wondering if he's supposed to cut the red wire or the green wire. Well, allow this blogger to turn fan-boy for a moment and tell you guys that the vid below sort of exuded that cathartic silver-screen feeling of bomb detonation suspense. There's just this air of tension. There's this nagging feeling that the huge black box might explode or something. Whatever. Okay, fan-boy mode off.

Enjoy the videos folks! Watch out for the crowd reaction when they see the huge-ass PS3 fan. Think of this as the PlayStation Pr0n. After all, we gave the Ninty folks (I want a Wii too!) their dose of console love with that Wii video a few days ago.

My GOD!

They took apart a £450/$600 console! What blasphemy!
by The Hoff - 2006-11-12 06:17:08
Was it really worth it...

Now what are they gonna do? It was a pretty expensive an rare piece of hardware, should they really be doing that to it? It looks kool and all but it looks like they snapped a few things getting it all of it open so i dont know if they will be able to put it back together... Give your thoughts
by - 2006-11-12 06:18:40
the fan...

you have to admit though, seeing that huge fan was geekishly awesome
by - 2006-11-12 06:35:56
it's bing indeed but...

Someone had to do it for the sake of everyone lol

Cooling solution

That unified heatsink (with heatpipes) and fan for the Cell and RSX is the best cooling solution i could have imagined for the PS3 outside of liquid cooling. No wonder the thing runs quietly, theres only one 12cm fan in the whole thing, which will run at relatively low RPM, resulting in low sound output.
by BULL3TPR00F - 2006-11-12 08:41:05
nice

wow great cooling system, one giant heatsink to cover the entire cpu and gpu, with a giant 120mm fan to cool it all. the larger the fan the lower the rpms, the less noise.
by BULL3TPR00F - 2006-11-12 08:43:48
hmmm..

the fan actually looks like a 160mm to me, but im not quite sure. its pretty big, and with the multiple fins it sends more cool air to the heatsink
by - 2006-11-12 10:20:54
what the?

what were they disassembling on the 4th vid? before the sixaxis
by - 2006-11-12 10:23:16
the fan

lol the fan is the heart of the PS3....DID U SEE THAT THING, my god, good to know that sony put such a huge fan to stop the overheating probs that happened to the 360. Damn.... even when it comes down to the FAN, the ps3 is better than the 360 LMAO... PS3 FTW

Marvelous piece of technology

Those videos were nothing short of amazing! Can anyone tell me what's that rectangular plastic piece in the SIXAXIS? Btw, all of you who think they made a mistake disassembling the PS3... bear in mind that these's are Japs were talking about. They'll have the PS3 reassembled before you can say "cupcake" and it'll even work better afterwards.
by - 2006-11-12 10:44:09
The Rectangular Plastic Piece....

I'm almost positive that it the gyro's (or accelerometer (sp?)) for the controllers motion sensing.
by - 2006-11-12 11:06:24
the rectangular piece in sixaxis is BATTERIS

and on 4 th vid it is power supply...
by skidz - 2006-11-12 12:10:01
hmm

useless piece of plastic on the top? :O
by - 2006-11-12 12:15:58
durh!

The Power Supply Unit
by - 2006-11-12 12:47:30
room for rumble?...

any thoughts on whether they shudve included rumble on the controller?
by RommelTJ - 2006-11-12 13:14:21
wrong

The rectangular plastic piece is the Ni Battery. Haven't you ever seen one before?
by - 2006-11-12 13:36:58
Might be...

The rectangular box in the controller could have just been the battery....
by - 2006-11-12 13:46:23
now that is next gen

tech. Makes the 360 look like a speak and spell
by Vietone - 2006-11-12 13:55:14
Great Design

For one they make the entire system fairly modular, I wouldnt be surprised if the motherboard for the 20Gb version and the 60GB version were identical. Meaning you could probably add the wifi and the memory card reader and probably have to purchase the top plastics that have the cut outs. The Xbox360 could have used a better design, instead of smaller louder fans, have one big fan inside the system. Also the fact that the Power Supply in the PS3 looks to be passively cooled, just shows that the PS3 would use less power then the Xbox360 although Im not sure how much each system uses. Sure the system is bigger then the Xbox360 but look at that cooling unit, its HUGE. The only problem i see with the cooling unit is dust, most people and i would say over 90% never clean the consoles cooling system. All it takes is every month you take canned air and blow it. But the cooling system in the PS3 is very efficient to the point where it needs to be kept clean for it to work its best. Kudos for Sonys engineering dept, they designed a great system. The only thing that I could see happening to the PS3 is the BD-ROM drive. Other then that, there are no heating issues, since there are no confirmed reports of it ever happening, just rumors. That cooling system is definitely a 120mm fan or bigger.
by - 2006-11-12 14:49:36
OMG...

PUT IT BACK TOGETHER!!! Please...?
by - 2006-11-12 15:49:05
peice in first vid with ps3 logo

could mean future customisation....like xbox 360.....it comes off really easy and your not opening the hardware...someone's gonna make face or (side) plates like they did with psp
by ps3crazy - 2006-11-12 16:07:04
why?!

First of all i was crying the whole time they were taking it apart.... u bastards! why!! why!! why?? and wtf i know they took the dual shock away but in the old controller it was stored in the handles, and if u look there, its empty.... so what the hell sony? that really breakes my heart. some one give me an explanation
by - 2006-11-12 16:23:51
stupid

*****en techno geeks, id be playing that ***** instead of taking it apart in trying to wreck, *****in googs haha
by - 2006-11-12 17:22:26
plz make it stop

they've dismantled my one true console love....... this is like someone who's afraid of blood, watching an open heart surgery, this makes me a little sick to my stomach
by CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2006-11-12 21:57:13
Ummm??!

Where are their grounding straps? Polyester shirts and semiconductors don't go good together!
by - 2006-11-13 00:29:07
perhaps...

They have no intention of re-assembling the console afterwards? Why bother to protect the semiconductor from static electricity during deconstruction when you won't bother putting it all back together again later? Fightening possibility right there.
by - 2006-11-13 04:34:04
They should have

If you look at the opened controller you can see that the handles and completely hallow. This is where the rumble devices used to be placed in the dual-shock controller, and it seems that it could be placed just as easily in the new six-axis. Sony just doesnt wanna because they dont wanna admit they stole there rumble technology from Immersion. -Ash-
by - 2006-11-13 04:37:40
pfft

they can do alot. now they have the case of the ps3 and the controller, they can make custom cases. i'm sure they will try to hack the firmware also. lots of possibilities.
by Darkatomz - 2006-11-13 06:10:25
err..

lol why would they ever want to take apart a ps3...?
by - 2006-11-13 07:03:30
lame comparison

The XBOX 360 is smaller so less room for a big fan. DUH. But then again you types always think bigger is better.
by - 2006-11-13 09:49:02
Nah

Rumble kinda sucks anyway, it's just added weight in the controller, i usually turn it off anyway
by - 2006-11-13 14:16:11
Your lame not the comparison...

The 360 may be smaller, but only by about 1" on all side if even that, Sony's cooling is obviously more efficient because the fan is horizontal to the system, DUHHH, so it pushes air into and out of the system, were as Microsoft was stupid enough to put the fans on the end like standard towers, but thats not efficient because it's too slim, don't have to be a genius to figure that one out....
by - 2006-11-13 14:18:35
Plastic Piece

I'm guessing thats the battery...
by - 2006-11-13 14:22:24
Faceplate Designs

I can imagine it now, a glossy picture of Nathan Hale pumping bullets into chimera.
by - 2006-11-13 16:01:20
STUPID

how stupid !!! seeing that makes me cry living in australia knowing that i will not get my hands on one untill march 07 and thses fools have theres they are not showing any respect for the ps3
by - 2006-11-13 22:22:32
Maybe

maybe they took it apart because they are a bunch of people working for microsoft's XBOX 360 team to find out how it works so they can get started on their XBOX 720. lol PS3 Shall own all consoles!!!
by - 2006-11-14 19:43:21
to AshsToAshs

Stolen technology from Immersion??? What's so hard to make in a motor based vibrator??? It's so stpid Immersion could get a licence to such a simple thing.
by - 2006-11-14 19:53:05
patented

Because as it turned out it was patented by Immersion. Yes, they patented the vibrator... +/
by - 2006-11-17 16:50:37
Uh... broken? No.

What part of watching this makes all of you think that it's broken? If they never intended to put it back together, why did they carefully place all of the screws in ways that they know where they go? Why be so gentle? If it's never going to be put back together, who cares if the case cracks? And, no one who as a brain in their head needs an ESD strap to take apart a console. I've built three PCs, taken apart my PS2 many times to clean the lens, and installed a modchip without an ESD strap. As long as you're not wearing MC Hammer pants and trying to play with a Van De Graaff generator while you tinker with your PS2, you're not doing any harm. And, about the controller being empty where the motors used to be, just think about it: PS1 had controllers (available) that didn't have dualshock, and if they just got rid of that part of the enclosure, it'd be pretty damned hard to hold on to. And about the comment that the motors only make the controller heavy: all gamers that I know despise lightweight controllers, it's a sign of low quality, and it just "feels wrong." If you buy a power supply for your PC and it weighs five pounds and costs $30, do you think it is just as good as the one that weighs ten pounds and costs $130? If lighter was equivalent to better, the weight would go down as the price went up. And, to top it off, if you don't like the added weight, you might want to get rid of the battery -- in fact, while you're at it, take out the analog sticks, too. You can do without them.

fan

Forget the fan, just look at what they did with the heat pipes.
