DFC Intelligence on PS3 Price's Effects For Sony and the Gaming Industry |
Ever since Sony officially announced its PlayStation 3 and revealed that it will sell for $499 for the 20GB model and $599 for the $60GB, many analysts have tried to put their 2 cents worth with regards to how this will affect the next-gen wars. Game industry research firm DFC Intelligence is no different.
This time off, the 'predicted' detrimental effects of the Sony console's high pricing are aimed at the whole gaming industry and not just at Sony. “The higher priced the hardware, the lower overall industry growth will be. The video game business model has been to build an installed base of tens of millions of users in a very short time frame. A key factor in this model is relatively low cost hardware...,” says a report issued by DFC.
DFC further notes that with the PS3's price finally out, changes in preferences has already occurred. As the $200 difference with the Xbox 360 is a significant one, DFC asserts that some gamers who were holding on to their money for the release of PS3 might now make an easy decision to transition over to the 360. They reiterated that the Sony brand name is not enough for gamers to stick to the PlayStation especially since the only next-gen gaming console out right now offers a rich software line-up.
Before all Sony purists raise hell, let me point out that these are just calculations and analysis of things to come. Until the PS3 is out, nothing is really final – no matter what analysts say...let us not take their word for it. But they are sure interesting to read about. Gamers can all prove them wrong or correct. Six months to go and we'll see how “true” these speculations will turn out to be.

1st COMMENT!! umm.....i dunno what to say
DUH recently, i asked my Local Resident Playstation Fanboy this question: "Will you be buying a PS3 for $600?" he responded with: "I bought a 360 yesterday....."
It's funny that bunch of smart men are speculating how it will be. For example there was a test in which monkeys and people that work in exchange were observed. After some time monkeys shew that they earn more than qualified workers! So don't tell me what it gonna' be like, cuz i know what i like. I choose PS3 and i know what i will get, cuz price is equal to it's opportunities. It will be a monster and japanese games will not fail. Every console has sth to offer, but gamers choose what they like and noone should tell that sth is better or that we souldn't buy this, cuz we will be dissapointed and it will end it's life very quick. I spit on those suckers.
I personally think the PS3 is gonna do very well.... And I am an owner of a 360... I don't pledge any allegance to one system... Only the games... And I think that the PS3's price isn't too high... Compared to prices these days on everything that has alot of technology in it... I mean... I am not rich at all and I am gonna be buying one.... I am also gonna get a Wii... But I think in the end... The Wii will sell more consoles then both the 360 and the PS3... The PS3 will beat the 360... It has so many features... Web Browser... Itunes-esqe media interface... PSP coop... Wifi.... Games.... Flash drive comp.... Keyboard and Mouse... BluRay... Not saying anything about the graphics... Because we haven't seen a final product yet... I personally think people are looking more for the Media Center Experience... And thats what they will get with the PS3... Because of all it has to offer... The price doesn't mean much... $500-$600 bucks isn't that hard to save... And its a pretty sweet deal for what your getting.... I mean... Its like a computer ($600-$1500)... a BluRay Player($800-$1600)... And a Video Game Console.... All packed into one.... Not exact on those prices... But those definently aren't cheap... And packed into one product... Thats a great deal I think... Again... Not a Sony Fanboy... Just someone throwing his 2 Cents in... Just like the douches in this post...
Sony's price targeted everybody who doesnt buy current playstation products. 600 is too much for a game system. I personally dont think that 600 is that much at all considering everything you get. I think by the time ps3 launches, 360 premium will be at half its price, 299. HAHa,, all you sony fanboys supported the Analyist stories when they said 360 is going to lose. Now the analyists say that ps3 is priced too high, and they are wrong. I didnt think MS would win this time, but I am really starting to wonder.. it seems nothing but bad news is posted on ps3.qj There is also a disturbing lack of software news for a system this close to launch. Wont buy a ps3, but I will be sad if it fails... although, Given my broken Sony car cd player, my fried Sony Xplod car amp, and my broken ps2, I could give a *****. Burn sony, Burn.
"HAHa,, all you sony fanboys supported the Analyist stories when they said 360 is going to lose. Now the analyists say that ps3 is priced too high, and they are wrong." There is a simple explanation. First they were right, then they decided to be wrong. It's as simple as that. "I didnt think MS would win this time, but I am really starting to wonder.. it seems nothing but bad news is posted on ps3.qj" Of course you are wondering, because PS3 isn't out yet. And the bad news are just the same crap everywhere multiplied from a reporter to another. It's now cool to mock the PS3. "Hey! Maybe we should speculate the success of PS3? What did the other webpage say? Oh, let's use that." ...And suddenly you remeber that you had a broken Sony device. Obviously your other things don't break at all and you Windows XP doesn't crash, ever. Maybe you should be more careful and let someone else operate these machines.
