Detach your HDD drive: warranty not voided |
Ó
Right about now, the other side of the world is basking under the glorious light of the PS3. It's already 11-11 in Japan; launch day for the lucky bastards, hehe. So, you can expect a lot of pics and coverage on this. (Y'know, pictures of people unpacking their own PS3 box, videos of people playing the console at home... Stuff that will generally make the rest of the world green with envy.)
So here are pictures of the official PS3 user guide. It's in Japanese and we can't quite make head nor tail out of it, but there are a few things worth noting here.
Replaceable SATA HDD: Remember when we showed you guys pics of the HDD drive bay? As you know, it's detachable and ultimately exchangeable with any 2.5" SATA HDDs. Sweet. So why not put in a 150GB or 250GB SATA HDD?
Imagine, a PS3 with a 750GB hard drive. English translations would be really helpful so we can know for sure if a beautiful monstrosity like a 750GB PS3 is truly possible.
Warranty: Some of you might be wondering about the warranty. Well, the manual teaches you how to detach and install SATA HDDs. If Sony's telling you how to do it, then it's probably not going to void your warranty. Also, reports coming in from the official PS3 forums say that it won't void your warranty.
Translations are most definitely welcome here...

This is one of the many reasons why PS3 will triumph in the next gen wars. MS can talk about downloadable content and movie rentals and all that, plus possibly a new 60gb hd in the future, but for the consumer to put in any size hd WITHOUT voiding the warranty... now that is sweetness. This actually kinda makes the 20gb version look even more attractive. I mean, cuz if you're gonna replace the hard anyways, right?
Well, if you looked at 2.5" sata hard drives well... they only extend up to 200gb i believe. I have never seen a 250gb 2.5" sata hard drive yet.
If you can connect an external HDD to PS3 through USB then 1TB is very possible.
I live tokyo. I purchase PS3. it not so good everybody! System is ok ok graphics like xbox.
And you can, it's been confirmed, just do a search.
2,5" HDDs only go up to 200gb I believe - toshiba has the record..i think
i live tokyo. I purchase PS3. it not so good everybody! System is ok ok graphics like xbox
so basically.... buying a 20gb ps3 would be better since you can just save $100 and swap the hdd for a bigger one?
you're MUCH better off buying an external hard drive enclosure (3.5") I belive theres a Vantec one availible for $45 Canadian. and you could put a 250 gig HDD in it and the total cost of that setup would only be $150. meanwhile mobile drives that are 100 gigs in size are around $150-$200. note all those prices are canadian
I live tokyo. I just purchase PS3 and it sux going straight to ebay buy xbox so much better
God, its so obvious hirose and shen are *****ing xbots pretending to be japanese, u *****ing retards. From what i heard, the japanese gamers are going nuts over ps3
You know these fake japanese guys would be more believable if they said they rather have nintendo DS or a Wii, but incase they don't know Xbox isn't popular at all in Japan. Nice try with the broken engrish there.
lol JP don't talk like that so its obvious you and your friend are xbox fanboys.
Crap I need to wait 4 MONTHS till I get my hands on a shiny PS3
saying he has friends like that what a kind person you are, they are all unregistered meaning its just one guy chaning his name each time... it's actually quite sad. Just another insecure 360 fan sensing danger with the JP release.
IGN said something about external drives - it might have trouble browsing the drives if it has folders.. or something..
now why can't Microsoft put out an empty drive caddy for the xbox 360 so we can insert any size drive??
you no speak good english fake japanese man go die!
Stupid american. i am from tokyo. xbox and ps3 are same. same graphic. systems are not good.
2 words and a symbol.....BECAUSE: PS3>360
get a mod to id the ips of the purported japs just for fun
there are many other features the extra $100 give
@ shen pfft don't tell me this
Since you asked, Shen and Hirose\'s IPs do not come out Japanese. They both come out from the same state on the East Coast of good ol\' USA. Kinda far from the Pacific. By the way, I was the one who put in the \"250GB\" SATA in this article: to clarify, 250GB is a dream the industry is confident they will achieve eventually - 200 is the current maximum. 750GB would have to be an internal 3.5\" SATA - which you can\'t put in your PS3\'s 2.5\" bay, but life finds a way. Check it out, nobody will stop you from using an internal drive as an external - just make sure the SATA drive you use has the right interface (and just don\'t step on it, LOL - and do attach one of those HDD fans on it).
Yeah. Japanese have better english grammar than hirose and shen combined.
The data connector(and the power I believe) is the the same on 2.5 and 3.5 SATA drives. So you could have a cable coming out the side/bottom of your PS3 or you could make a custom case, with power supply mod/upgrade probably.
But what concerns me is the interface is it SATA II (SATA 3.0 Gb/s)? It should be. I mean, Sony wants to make this machine pwn the rest, right? If so, then the PS3 is SATA II (or even 6.0 Gb/s or am I just dreaming ehehehehe) there's no problem getting a 750GB BARRACUDA (SEAGATE) 7200.1 hooked up to the PS3! BWAHAHAHAHAHAAH!
I just drove by the local Best Buy here in MA. There's already a line of the greater unwashed camping out for the possibility of Sony electric sex on 11/17. Someone bring them a sandwich or something...
Graphics depend on the type of TV you have. If yours isn't 1080p, then you're not gonna get the best resolution. It also depends on the game. PS3 is above all other game systems at this time.
You guys crack me up. Your so insecure that your precious little Xbox is going to falter under the great PS3 wave that you go to every fourms and news sites that let you post and try to claim that your japs who have ps3s and claim how inferior they are to your beloved Xbox. Guess you know whats going to happen to your precious little toy when the ps3 comes out. It will fall along the wayside like the neo-geo or turbographics 16. Enjoy the dust.
Why would you pay 500 dollars for such a crap system? PS3 is not that great, you're paying for a run down peice of ***** computer, with over priced games. If you console idiots were any smart, you'd start playing on your PC.
1) Breakthroughs in hard drive technology should have drives of 10X current density in three years. 2) external SATA (not eSATA) should become very popular. Perhaps a switch between the two. 3) A direct hookup to the PC will be possible through both PS3 and Linux interfaces Finally, the graphics capabilities of the PS3 are slightly better than what XBOX 360 can currently offer but no games currently take full advantage of the PS3's capabilities. Be prepared to be blown away in a future game. The PS3 is the best value for electronics that I've ever seen. You have a high-def gaming console, a fully functional Linux computer and a Blu-Ray player. The fact that the console can leverage both hardware and software means that it can play optimized quality for BR, Divx, MP4 etc. The PS3 is going to become even more awesome with more software, firmware fixes and add-ons.
Actually, there are THREE features in the $600 bundle - WiFi, a card reader and the 60GB drive... A card reader is pretty useless when you have USB ports... WiFi is potentially important, but LOTS of people have their PS2 hooked up to an ethernet switch already anyway. That just leaves the HD. I bought the 20GB and replaced the HD with a 100GB drive that I got online for $70. I hooked up the PS3 to my existing WiFi game bridge. The 60GB model is not a clear value. It really depends on your situation. Nothing in that bundle is that impt.
