Decrease in PS3 manufacturing cost looming

Takao Yuhara - Image 1By now, you already know about the production of the 65nm CELL for the PS3, but during Sony's quarter-end earnings call, CFO Takao Yuhara provided some new bits on the PS3's manufacturing costs decrease.

Apparently, aside from the move to 65nm, there would also be a component update which aims to lessen the parts inside the console. As to the specifics of the component update, well, that's open for speculation...for now.

Website beyond3D speculates that the update could involve the removal of the EE+GS chip, used to enable backwards compatibility. They think this would make sense because Sony is already hard-at-work to perfect PS2 software emulation, "removing the legacy hardware would reduce both chip expense and motherboard complexity."

Aside from that, the Sony CFO indicated that as of December, blue laser diode yields have dramatically improved, and that the six million PS3s shipped by the end of March is still attainable.

The PS3's manufacturing costs would decrease, will its retail price follow the same path? Takao Yuhara said that we shouldn't expect price cuts, Michael Pachter said that it is very possible. Well, we just have to wait and see what happens next.

» not much we can do..

Ok, so the PS3 is a little over the edge in pricing. Its kinda like a car;

You live in some place where its constanltly over 30 degrees C. Ok so you go to a Jeep retailer and ask for a good one, he replies we have a jeep Grand Cherokee for 17,000! But for air conditioning we charge 18,500! What would you go for! Obviously the 18,500!

So stop fragging Sony for the price, thats not the case!

(well if you in Canada, then frag Futureshop since they raised it to 700!

by Broken_Hero - 2007-02-06 23:36
» The 360 version was developed alongside the PC Version

that means they had more than enough time to tune Oblivion up for the 360 [Which is very Easy to develop for]...they had way more than a year, they did the Best they can do in the 360 Version

The PS3 version only had one year [actually Less] to be ported,And the PS3 is a Much harder to develop for....yet the results are far better

Again....read

Six million PS3s shipped by the end of march is still attainable. Ok, but he forgot one importatnt thing. Sales have to double! They would be lucky to ship four million by then.

» Qj you MUST post this News article

Please also read this from the same site CALL OF DUTY 3 PS3 and how it compares to the 360 version both made around the same time.

The section just above the picture of the tank makes the most intresting read about the framerates washed out color etc

» PREVIEW

QJ you should stop this OFF TOPIC post starter from doing it, what has this got to do with PS3 manufacturing costs?.

And anyway I nor anyone else cares for same game comparisons with such different development times either way it will not be fair and its a PREVIEW.

» Activison?

you're using activision to judge? how sad, they're a scaled down version of EA games who rushes titles regardless of what platform their on. Look at what happened to the battlefield series for the PC.

» The so called Latest News By Broken was sadly just a PREVIEW

The Latest News By Broken is actually a PREVIEW

And heres one from the same site (which REVIEWS not a PREVIEW as done by the first poster)

look how much better the 360 version is compared with Call of duty 3 on the PS3 and the development time was much closer not like the 1 st poster who uses some one year old 360 game as comparison.

» Activision yer yer

Looks like a very fair comparison to me

http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/746/746533p2.html

The one big difference is that while the Call of duty REVIEW showed the 360 to be the far better version NO ONE went around FIRST POSTING OFF TOPIC the news though.

by Vietone - 2007-02-07 04:35
» ..

Not really, as most developers went lazy and ported games over without considering using any tools the PS3 has.

The only way to make a fair comparison is for the game to have 2 teams, one for the Xbox360 and one for the PS3 and have them code games specifically for either platform for both platforms advantages.

Only then can a real comparison can be made. its like all the PC games that have been ported over to the Xbox360, they are piss poor in comparison to their PC counter-parts.

» Ok Ok!!

Who cares already. You don't have to tell us on every freakin post Broken_Record.

» um

what does shipped have to do with sales???

The ps3 is only out in Japan and NA. They still have to stock the PAL region!!!

6 million shipped should be easy. 6 million sold is entirely different.

Looks at MS: shipped 10.4 million units by Jan.1 and then cut their production goal from 15 million units to 12 million units by June. That's b/c they have saturated the market.

by Seoulfood - 2007-02-07 05:38
» hmm

You really think a game like COD3 is going to push the ps3 to it's limits? Even if it's a worse port, it's definately not gonna show what the PS3 is capable of. It's a friggin launch game. To my eye, COD3 looked like crap on both consoles. Gears of war blew it out of the water.

I don't even know why you make comparisons with this kind of game.

Resistance looked better than COD3, why don't you compare those two?

by Seoulfood - 2007-02-07 05:51
» oh and also

The argument that had been going on since the "Bathesda: Ps3's technical limitations" article was that PS3 could never run a game like Oblivion like the 360 could. Look at the comments, stuff like graphics will be much worse, it'll run slower, etc.

It's funny how now that people bring up the IGN article, the argument is completely shifted in a different direction.

The debate wasn't about development times or anything. People straight up said, PS3 can't do it. But look, it can. Even if they can make this exact same build for the 360 later on, with better graphics or whatever, the fact of the matter is, PS3 can run an Oblivion that was better than the 360's. That's really the end of the story.

I hope people realize when they read my comments that I will never say PS3 is BETTER than 360. Because as far as I know, it's not. I only say that PS3 is better than how most of you HOPE it is.

I don't understand why so many of you want it to fail so badly.

Maybe you'll make snide remark that "oh, you paid an extra $200 for a system that plays mostly the same as the 360." Maybe this is true, but WOWWWWW $200???? Whatever. I also get to play some blu-ray, and play whatever sony exclusives will come out. And later on, after the 360 switches to 65nm chip, I'll buy that too.

Don't sweat all this crap. Just hope your own systems do well. There's no point in hoping the other one fails, because even if one beats the other, you're still the same guy sitting at home holding this bitterness about something that isn't even relevant to anything.

my $0.02.

» sales are needed to increase shipments

Unless stores and distributors like stockpiling massive amounts of PS3s, sales will need to pick up drastically. I wouldn't say the PS3 market is saturated, but it's definately not in short supply. No significant games are coming out for at least nine months, and that's why most people are either waiting for a PS3 or sick of waiting and have bought an XBOX 360.

by truth - 2007-02-07 10:27
» true but

The PS3 hasn't gone worldwide yet. 6 million units worldwide is completely feasible even with slow sales.

NA, japan, EU, Australia, etc.

No stock piles required.

They said 6 million shipped BEFORE the european launch. I am curious to see how it does in europe. I really don't think it will do so hot after reading many posts here from europeans.

by truth - 2007-02-08 09:45
» hmmm

I was under the impression it was 6 million units shipped by March... perhaps I am wrong.

the EU launch will go great... but who knows after that. If MGS4 and KZ get pushed back then Sony is in a world of trouble
