Dead Space: what level of gruesome can ban a game in Japan?

Ok, so Dead Space (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360) is pretty gruesome. But gruesome enough to get banned in Japan? Come on. Some people - rightfully - have speculated that the news of the ban was just a publicity stunt. The EA devs behind the game are sticking to it though, and they give us some possible explanations behind the ban.

So what level of gruesome could possibly make Japan ban a game? According to the devs' Twitter feed, it might have something to do with the main character being dismembered when killed. Although that still sounds pretty tame. Perhaps it's the thematic content behind the dismemberment? Anyhoo, here's a record of the Twitter feed:

Dead Space team: we are banned in Japan, we promise - Image 1

So is the ban real, or a publicity stunt? We know that the announcement of the ban in Germany was a little premature, and China's no surprise, so the only real thing in question here is whether the game's too gruesome for Japan. Because we all know we'd want to buy it even more if that's true.

So I guess if it is a publicity stunt, EA's a genius.

» Here is a possibility...

Because the 'player' of the game is acting as the protagonist within the game environment it is entirely possible that the Japanese folks feel this is too close to being an act upon yourself.

What I mean is; take the Resident Evil Game and the beheading. Even though Americans know that there is a character that get his head lobbed off, the Japanese see it as "YOU" playing the character of Leon. This is directly 180 degrees opposite of their cultural mantra.

Think of it as the idiotic "save the children from themselves" BS that Tipper Gore thru onto our society back in the late 80s.

You know the one; the rule that says you (kids mostly) are too stupid to tel tell the difference between a cartoon and reality, so we edited Bugs Bunny down to blathering stupidity and made more than unrealistic cartoons about people that shoot at one another and never hit anyone.
