David Reeves: Absolutely no price cuts for PS3, not today, not in Spring |
Ó
David Reeves, SCEE President, couldn't have been more straightforward and decisive when he said that there won't be any price cuts for the PS3. The PS3 isn't doing so well sales-wise, and this isn't going to help. They may be giving discounts in India this Christmas, but the rest of the world will see that the PS3 will not get any cheaper.
Here's what he said in his interview with MCV:
No, we are not going to go down in price on PS3 – neither are we going to go down in price on PS3 in spring time either. Absolutely not, whatever you might have heard to the contrary. Our strategy is very much value added.
I actually felt the sting on that one, he's THAT sure that there won't be any cheaper PS3s, at least not for a long time. He adds, though, that they're going to add pieces of software and original ideas to the console. "What we want is to make the machine value for money," he said. Why not start with backwards compatibility then?
The fact of the matter is, they're losing money. He himself reveals that they lost US$ 2 billion two years ago, and a billion more last year. With the way things are going for Sony right now, things aren't looking good, and would-be PS3 buyers still won't get the much-awaited price drop.

it's worth $400. xbox 360 should've gotten a price cut a year after its release. why did the 360 cut its price and still gets profit? because it's supposed to be worth $300 in the first place, not $400.
I don't know what happened.
Sony absolutely, to the fullest, annihilated the Xbox, Gamecube, and killed the Dreamcast in that generation. Same with the PS1.
Now, with this odd strategy they have, they're in last place. They better be cooking something massive up to boldly deny any price drops in the future.
What has happened to Sony?
Unless there is a price drop soon in order to entice potential buyers to the PS3... Its going to be a very painful road for the console next year...
I don't know why people complain about the price - Sony could have made the machine cheaper but left out all of the features - maybe they should create a model without WiFi, online play or a hard drive? I can never understand why people only ever see the price on the box but never figure out the total cost of a system.
Sony already lose money on every unit, the company laid off 16,000 people - on what planet are they going to discount the PS3?
The PS3 isn't expensive for the tech you get, but it is for the average gamer who just wants to play games and not the other shizzle such as blu-ray movies.
Not to mention the 360 had more time build up a great games library, along with great online play and its cheaper.
The 360 is just more appealing to gamers.
