David Jaffe opines: I would have taken Blu-ray out

God of War Kratos-Creator says... It turns out that there was more about David Jaffe's previous Bonus Round interview than we thought. Online, other people have begun speculating about a statement the God of War creator made during the last few seconds of the clip. It was a preview montage of what we could expect in the next part of the interview to be aired soon. So what did he say that got a lot of people roused?

Geoff Knightly (voiced-over): What would David have changed about the PS3?
David Jaffe: I probably would have taken the Blu-ray out... and sold it for less money.

Do note that David Jaffe is a Sony employee - he's the Sony Santa Monica Studio creative director. And while we have other Sony higher-ups (e.g. Phil Harrison) have continuously stressed the importance of Blu-ray and how others see as it could be the PS3's saving factor, now we have Jaffe airing out his own opinions. Opinions as they are, they don't seem to fit with what Harrison's been trying to shove down everyone's throats.

As always, we have to place in a caveat here: opinions don't confirm nor deny anything. They're just personal thoughts on the subject matter, and do not in any way automatically say that - in this case - Blu-ray will indeed be taken out of the PS3. The chances of that happening (and this is just this writer's personal opinion now) is just about as much as seeing Kratos wear a Princess Peach dress and lay waste to the Locust horde on Annex mode.

For all it's worth, we can't really say much for now since the next part of the interview hasn't been shown yet. We don't really know in what context the guy said that statement, so maybe there's more to this after all? Don't worry, we'll keep you updated as soon as GameTrailers has the video posted!

» um....no

Blu-Ray is one of the main selling points in my book. Consider the fact that the PS2 was $700 here in canada at the Sony store when it first hit (which was not even remotely worth the price) and this baby is awesome!

Blu-Ray players here run a minimum of $700-$800 and not to mention that the game devs have a 50 gig disk to fill rather than being limited to only 8.5 gigs for a reg dvd.

however it does leave one to ponder the fact that if the PS3 is $700 WITH a built in Blu-Ray player then are the Blu-Ray players even worth their high price tags? heck no!! all about greed cuz bottom line is "what the market will bring" and that my friends is very sad!!!!

» actually..

i'm starting to enjoy Blu Ray.. aside from the Taladega Nights and Casino Royale freebies i got for pre-ordering i've already bought six other movies... most recent one was the ultimately hilarious Kung Fu Hustle... and the presence of Blu Ray doesn't really affect my existing library of DVD movies cause it plays DVDs too...

Blu Ray is fine in my book... if Blu Ray sticks that's when i buy a stand alone Blu Ray player.

by Jordan - 2007-04-11 12:52
» I agree

I think its one of the main selling points as well, its the leading the new format wars and is surperior quality wise regardless of being more expensive. I think the PS3 has very good value but it is quite expensive, but the value makes up for it, where as you could go pay $250 for a Wii and think it itself isn't worth that $250, what you get for it, but anyhow what he says is just an opinion and i respect that, hes just going with the cheaper price means more sales means more profit road which is logical but yah Sony went this way and many people are happy for it, some arnt, but mainly the fanboys of the other system

by Tactical_Chicken - 2007-04-11 12:52
» also....

Also bear in mind that unless the movie is recorded in HD then it is only an upscaled version of the movie for the Blu-Ray format (as far as I can tell by the research that I have done so far). So if the movie is like 2-3 years old and older then it really isn't HD. Remember folks, these corporations are extremely greedy and they will release older movies under the Blu-Ray format implying that they are HD when in fact they are not. Therefore there is absolutely no need in replacing your regular dvd movies for the Blu-Ray disk.

He knows that Blu-ray is far from being useful for games, if not absolutely bad for them....

I would have picked up a PS3 already,. just for the novelty, if it didn't cost so much due to blu-ray....

by Shatterdome - 2007-04-11 13:06
» Partially true...

And totally true if you are looking for an HD version of transformers or some other movie before any type of digital recording was invented.

However, some older movies can be HD, I know the "new" star wars were all filmed digitally and in HD, even though DVDs were just gaining wide acceptance....but I think Lucasarts was one of the first studios to do that....

want to explain to me what a reach around is? Is it what Microsoft is charging for 3 cover songs from a playstation 2 game? Or is it forcing studios to charge for what should have been free maps and later pulling the price and claiming it as a "good will" gesture? Or maybe it is charging 180 dollars for what essentially is a plug n' play play 120 gig hard drive?

If you want to talk about rapage, give Microsoft a call.

I did some reaserch and a reach around is when Mr.Sony makes you pay $700 and then doesnt release a single good game. I cant even find a date to when a good game will come out. Although i am a HARDCORE 1337 Fan of japanese RPG's like finalfanticy 82, so i guess i will be ok giving all my money to mr.sony. Also im gay

Thank you for clarifying that. I am infact giving you a reach around because the ps3 is sooo bad that you have to like it in the pooper to actually buy it. Blue ray is a piece, and we purposely make the other players overpriced so that my fanboys have SOME arguments. FUUCK, im even loosing all my games to the xbox thats how bad developers want to get away from my black spawn of lucifer (aka ps3)

Very few people want blu-ray? I know tons of people who want blu-ray but is just expensive for them right now. When the price comes down, they will be all over it. It was the same for DVD. Maybe we should all complain that the PS2, Xbox and the Xbox 360 have dvd and say that cd is enough. Thats the same kind of argument.

» You know what I think?

I think the PS3 should have had HD-DVD in it.

HD-DVD, though it stores a lot less is cheaper, so it would have made the PS3 a lot cheaper (and more people would be in support of it).

by Extinction - 2007-04-11 16:02
» F HDDVD

Actually less companies would be in support of it, and less people as a result.

Not only that, but HDDVD has less space, and slower loading speeds, and higher costs since Sony would have to go through a third party rather than make the drives themselves like they do with bluray

» sort of

Sony invented blu-ray, but doesn't actaully amek the electric eye. That's why they couldn't ship 2 million for launch supposedly they couldn't get the components in on time.

I seriously think though that they lied and made shortages on purpose so that it would look like it was "selling out" for so long because it was in suuuuuch high demand when really they were just cutting their stocks. Also they keep the stocks short through christmas and release a bunch afterwards so you think "I couldn't get one for christmas, let's get one NOW" and don't even look at the price tag. But, hey, the 360 did the EXACT same thing.

» yeah

not to mention that there are Blu-Ray burners for the pc......where are the HD burners....hhhhmmm? yes a Liteon Blu-Ray burner here in Alberta is $700 but where's the HD counterpart? HD-dvd belongs to the movie industry and it takes 3 or 4 layers to achieve 25 gigs for the disk.... whereas the Blu-ray does it in 2 layers to achieve 50 gigs....I'm thinking ya.....50 gigs of storage on an optical disk.....yeah baby.... however they are still milking the technological cow and need to move over 100% to flash-like storage for movies and what-not

by Thabor - 2007-04-11 18:03
» Blue Ray prices..

You've got to realize Sony has a different revenue model than some of the other producers like Samsung. They can afford to discount blue ray players the same way they can video games, because they've got an established library of property to sell to offset the hardware losses.

Companies which are pure hardware producers can't do that.

by rolly poly - 2007-04-11 18:28
» film

film can always be rescanned at higher resolutions, it's only media that is natively digital that gets upscaled.

older cartoons are the same way, so "Transformers, Roll out!" sorry... i had to.

Its a games console....

I want it to play GAMES.

The Blu Ray is more or less an inconveniance.

If they got rid of it and lowered the Price I would have bought a PS3.... Instead of a 360.

I made the right choice.

Don't work more hours to pay bills, buy stuff for the kids, make house payments, no nothing unimportant like that. Instead buy a nearly useless game console. Yes that is a smart buy.

by PS3 Fantard - 2007-04-11 23:34
» Yeah that WAS the plan

Instead, sony will be lucky to have just blu ray succeed. PS3 is last place, and has no chance of making a comeback.

Yeah CHUCKINGROCKSUP MYASS, smart move killing off the Playstation name in gaming and turning it into a movie player brand. That's why sony is still #1 right? Oh, #3 now. With only 3 consoles out.

» David Jaffe needs to run sony's game division

Proof there is actually smart people working for sony. Just the people in charge making the decisions are dumbasses. You'd have to be a complete moron to think blu ray has any gaming advantage. Playstation used to be a true gaming console back when it was popular. Then the dumbass idiots thought it would sell just from the name so they could shamelessly promote their unfinished crap movie format and jack up the price $200. Doh! Now only a tiny fraction of PS2 owners want a PS3 now and the others are going to XBOX, a real life next gen game console.

by hmm - 2007-04-12 00:43
» FINALLY

finally someone calls out the blu-ray

sony used the ps3 to whore blu-ray to the public... and sadly people bought into it for way more than its worth

i'm not saying blu-ray is bad, but you know sony is just nailing you with a really high price... they make it look like its expensive to produce and all... well it may be more expensive to produce compared to dvd's, but its still a pressed plastic disc... how much can that cost to sony

i think jaffe's just concerned at how many ps3's have been sold, lets face it, if it was a lil bit lower, the ps3 install base right now would be huge, probably not far behind the wii

people buy the ps3 mainly to play games... focus is not movies, also jaffe's opinion of leaving blu-ray out may be an indication that games don't really need 50 gigs of space right now,( kinda weird considering god of war used dvd9 )

by Retarded_Chicken_above - 2007-04-12 01:12
» .

HD-DVD has 15gb per layer. Triple layer discs are coming out with much higher capacity. Current drives and players support the 3 layer discs.

If the PS3 could actually do something useful with 25gb, it could be worth it. If there was only one HD movie format, a built in HD drive would make sense.

by Outsider - 2007-04-12 02:01
» ???

Blue Ray is a very important factor in the next gen battle, without it Ps3 would be just like an x360. Future Ps3 games will definitely need more space, i can't imagine new MGS or FF on 5-6 dvd's. That would the worst possible thing. Blue Ray is the future.

» I agree with David Jaffe

And as the developer of the God of War series, no-one can turn around as say his games sucks and therefore he doesn't know what he's talking about. I'm sure we all can't wait to see God of War 3 on the PS3.

I'm sure there are many other devs who feel exactly the same, except fpr many, their positions aren't as strong as David's to be able to voice their opinions publically, therefore they toe the Sony line.

Blu-ray is not as big an issue as many gamers make it out to be. Yes it has more space but it is slower than the drive in the 360. And it clearly isn't quite as important to most devs as some gamers believe. Since exclusives which some here claimed NEEDED the space of Blu-ray and needed the Cell processor, later turn out to be coming to the 360 also!

by Barakku - 2007-04-12 09:41
» Hey, generic ***** name,

If PS3 were cut down to be exactly like Xbox360, it wouldn't sell because there would already be a well established console of the same type out. Same for the Wii, different consoles need to actually be different, or else people won't buy them. If PS3 didn't have it's Cell and BD, and Wii didn't have it's Wiimote, they wouldn't be worth it.

Consoles need to be DIFFERENT from each other.
