Dark_Alex webmaster comments on debug firmware for PlayStation 3 - Image 1A couple of days ago, some of you guys will remember running into our report about a retail PlayStation 3 running on debug firmware. The hack was attempted by XVISTAMAN2005, who further noted that it was only partially successful.

That aside, it looks like the attempt has received attention from Alek, the dark_alex.org webmaster who's opened up a discussion thread regarding the possibility of loading debug fw's on the PS3. During the course of the Q&A session, we ran into this interesting exchange between member Concerned Gamer, and Alek:

Concerned Gamer:
  1. CAN the official PS3 firmware be decrypted ?
  2. Will there ever be an M33 cfw for the PS3 ?
  3. Are the any hardware limitations (modchips needed) or can the modding be done strictly from software ?
Alek's reply:
  1. Official PS3 firmwares can be unpacked, checked and studied, but itself has its own encryption (with pkg signatures and self one) that blocks most of the things that its being done for the ps3.
  2. Probably.
  3. Depends on the modding you are talking about.
Responding to another reader (Mike) Alek further clarified that the way things were going, homebrew apps might be the first content that will arrive on the PlayStation 3. Alek's discussion is still ongoing, so if you're interested in joining the thread, you can visit the blog the source link below. Drop by again in case we run into any related updates.

Nice answers to question 2 and 3. No offence, but we don't need Alek to tell us that, everyone of us can think up those answers.

Oh yeah..

I can see it before me; 3.10 M33 for ps3. :D Maybe we can get some emulators anyway sometime? Mainly i want a Dreamcast emulator. Maybe someone will be able to port NullDC to the PS3 in the future? It would be soo awesome to play Shenmue in 1080P. :)

good news

This is good news, but he hasnt made the firmware yet so calm down just a bit. Why dont we just wait it out for sony to make another silly security error and then we'll talk. But i cant say im not happy by this news

Well, consider...

The PSP was a portable system... Homebrew on that console exploded like it did because it was 1. Easy 2. Really useful you had a handheld with Wi-Fi, USB, infrared and 3D graphics. Not many devices back when it launched had anything like this, so being able to drag and drop applications to do clever ***** was quite a feat. The PS3 is a facking hooge home console with decent games. Doesn't have quite the same homebrew potential when you consider that games for it are like teams of hundreds and take months. One dev at home can't do to the PS3 what one dev at home can do to the PSP.

I agree However, something I would like some hacker to do is: remove the region check with PS2 and PS1 games.

by J2Jack - 2008-05-23 08:35:23
Yeah!

I'd enjoy that, but unfortunately I think PS1/2 games are locked by the drive itself... i.e. if the SCE 'wobble' wave is missing from the zero sect it just won't read the disc. The way around it is to have games ripped to the hard disk, and play them from there, removing region checks. But then it's square one, hack the console in the first place +(

i can only hope

that homebrew doesnt touch the ps3 untill its ready a CFW will have to be created an perfected before public homebrew is released, this way hopefully it will be possibe to establish psn on the cfw yes homebrew on ps3 will must likely be of no real use, unless you consider things such as the cheatdevice for GTA, and possibly msn etc and just general apps to make the ps3 more multimeda, as the psp wasnt a fully functional multimedia device the ps3 is and therefore can be taken advantage of one it will also help others learn to program ....... and also not everyone knew m33 was probably going to come out in fact no did, and if you did your an idiot 1, theres no absolute gurantee the ps3 will be hacked or hacked long enough to establish an m33 series 2, who the ***** can say, that theres going to be an m33 series, only DA would know that unless he handed it over or a ***** took the name, and DA still doesnt know

Its not a neccessity for the PS3

I agree with all the comments above on custom firmware not being neccerssary. I suppose it would be useful for things like emulators and additional movie codecs but not much else. The PS3 is becoming a nice little piece of equipment and its only two years old. In that time we have seen divx compatability, wallpapers, blu ray 2.0, printer connection, improved internet browser, I could go on but we all know the features. So for the future we know that there will be in game communications, some time in June. Im not entirely sure what it means but im guessing its being able to voice chat whilst playing on different games. As for custom soundtracks and in game messaging we know its possible, im not sure about in game xmb but i remember seeing an early build of it a couple of years ago. Though Sony have stated it is coming I don't think itl be with 2.40. I think ppl have misinterpreted in game communication with in game xmb. It would be nice to see game invites and a couple of other things that the 360 does, though iv heard they are patented which is laughable. Way to easy to get round those patents with loopholes. Beyond what we know, who knows what features they will release for the potential 10 year support. My only concern is that the PS4 is rumoured to be released at the earliest by 2011/12 (according to a game magazine). Which means by then the PS3 updates could be far and few between. The PSP is a mods heaven, adding portable features that we have always wanted on the go. The PS3 is different, not only is it a more complex system to hack and more expensive if you brick it. But it doesnt need the features that CFW PSPs have, its a home console with some decent games and apart from the real tec buff, who will moan about lack of codecs etc, it is more than enough for the average buyer looking to purchase multi media If CFW came out I would not risk it.

I'd like to see emulators on the ps3

The ps3 could emulate PS2 and xbox, that would be REALLY cool! :D (also all the old ones like nes/snes(would be great if it could also support multiplayer)/sega genesis/psx(really great, at 6,99$ per game it's costly, lol)/etc. Maybe the ps3 could also emulate the psp? I would LOVE that. I wish I could play FF7 crysis core!!! Still, we will never be able to completly play real copies, unless we start them from the HD since, at least I, cannot burn BDs... But anyway, having homebrew would be enough for the next 2 years if it evolve fast with emulators (I don't care about home made games). Maybe we could even make mods, to have programs directly in the the XMB, like firefox. Anyway, it's great news even if it's not really news, since we all knew this was possible. It's gonna be great when we can play homebrew on the ps3, a hudge step it was for the psp dev.

hopefully

id love a dreamcast emu, especially if i could use the BD drive to play the DC games i actually own, and the hard drive for some "borrowed" games.

What's the point?

I really don't see the point. Sure it's good on the PSP 'cause its fun to play games on the move but what's the point if it's on an home console? Plus it'll cost a lot more to fix a PS3 then to just go out and buy the old consoles and games. Also Sony were pretty annoyed at the CFW for PSP but if they do this then Dark_Alex is just begging for a death wish. The PS3 has had to cut its price down and stuff already so they aren't gonna be happy that people would be able to download games for free etc. Moreover you wouldn't be able to go online on the PS3 otherwise they'd just see that you've got CFW and ban your account or, even worse, prosecute you so what's really the point? I think Dark_Alex should really step away from this idea as all it's gonna do is bring problems

by Binary - 2008-05-24 14:04:51
um

I don't we need one or else you going to have a *****ty library games in store just like the PSP

by Binary - 2008-05-24 14:11:39
Blah Right

Did you know how long PS2 emulator out for pc? That thing will take about 5 more years until it's fully playable. So I prefer sticking with your official PS2 BC CD. and xbox on the PS3. right theirs not even one out for the pc so that will take probably forever as well. So yeah quit dreaming and wait for at least 20 years until theirs a full speed xbox and PS2 for the PC and probably PS3. Sony and Microsoft operates their games differently.

by Binary - 2008-05-24 14:17:26
If I own a PS3, I totally agree not to risk it

I like the way you think. If the prices where like normal like the good ol PS2, Game Cube, and xbox. I would install cfw but PS3 and PSP is different. PSP can be hack through a battery. If you screw up on the PS3, then your screwed I guess, I think theirs no power plug-in hacks for that sucker. It would even suck more if you do a firmware update and power cut off and had to send it to sony.
