D3Publisher has been running a rather elaborate viral campaign for the fictitious classic videogame icon Matt Hazard for the past month. Today they've finally unveiled the game it's all been leading up to: Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

According to the story concocted by D3Publisher, Matt Hazard's been around since the days of 8-bit gaming. After 25 years of games, Hazard is now all set to take on the next generation of gaming.

This new Matt Hazard game, which "parodies some of our fondest memories in classic gaming and pop culture", will feature all of the "old enemies" Hazard has encountered in his illustrious (fake) career. The game also features a villain that can manipulate the game world on the fly, making survival a rather tough prospect for our hero.

Other features include a cover system called "point and cover", upgradeable weapons, and a number of interactive melee moves.

The concept itself is intriguing, and the Matt Hazard backstory and fake game chronology makes for some rather fun reading. You can check out more of it at The Real Matt Hazard. Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard is currently under development by Vicious Cycle and is due out in Q1 2009.
