Crytek's Harald Seeley: PS3, 360 CryENGINE 2 to look near high settings on PC - Image 1

Doubting the title? Well, don't. According to Crytek's Harald Seeley, CryENGINE2 caters to specific consoles such as Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360. In an interview, Seeley claims that their engine for the consoles would look closely to the high setting visuals of a PC when playing games.

Seeley said that they definitely tailor their engine specifically to each platform. In order for them to do so, they had to consider various factors. These include video hardware capabilities of PCs and consoles, memory budgets, "the lack of a hard disk on some models, and the acceptance of requirement of the hardware vendors themselves."

Once everything was put into place, Seeley said that they "expect the final outcome will result in games that look like they're running at high settings, or nearly high settings, on a PC." The only challenge they encountered was with the memory limitations of the consoles when they were converting the AI systems.

As for the console differences, Seeley favored the PS3 engine that they were developing over the Xbox 360. This is what he said about it:

Well there is no doubt that porting our engine to the PlayStation 3 is the more challenging of our two ongoing conversion projects, but that works to our advantage in the end.

We feel certain we have the ability to get the most that is possible out of that platform, and therefore PS3 games which run on our engine in the future will definitely stand significantly apart from other games that donÂ’t.

» wow

I just want to see a decent game on the consoles.

I played crysis on my PC and really, its not that great (The graphics are beautiful but its boring as hell). If they do get crysis on the ps3 they better make some good changes to it.

wow another person who played it for 5 min before deciding it was crap.... Next time try following the story and maybe it will interest you. I have a hard core pc gamers PC, but the only games i really ever liked was FarCry, Crysis, and Half Life 2, but for someone to say its boring is an understatement. We are all entitled to our own opinions though, but i feel most people who say its boring is because they didn't even follow the objectives and just ran around killing random people. My reason for feeling this is because most of my friends that play it say wow the visuals are beautiful and just kill 20 people and say wow this game is boring and there not even going where they need to go. Of course running around in a huge land with nothing to do can get boring...

Overall the PS3 is shaping up to be a very powerful console and its truly impressive that they can get high visual details in this game on the consoles.

i guess im oldschool... but i like shooters that are linear. It is boring compared to HL/HL2 because there are points where you are running to the next objective and thats all it is, running.

» Cheap.

Once again, we are pushed back in terms of technology because of cheap buyers who buy inferior models of a console.

by Manny151 - 2008-04-08 03:53
» That would only apply to the 360

Every PS3 out there has an HDD. It's not the customers fault it's Microsoft's fault for not including a hard drive on every console. This no HDD thing is going to continue to cause problems for the 360 in the future and on of 2 things in going to happen. 1. Development will get held back on the console or people will be forced to pay for an overpriced hard drive from M$ because of games that require it. Either way the customer losses. That's M$ for you. But people complained about the PS3's price. lol you get what you pay for. The lack of a high capacity format disc is also another problem they're going to have very soon.

Thats the beauty though, this is a game engine. Crysis was just a big demostration.

They plan on letting anyone who wants it access, which means that we can see this level of pretty without the game designers having to focus on that, which hopefully means better gameplay and stories.

» Actually

I said it was boring because I did follow the objectives and just found it boring.. I'd rather somthing like half life 2 (which I played both). Graphics aren't everything but thats not the only thing I'm judging this game on. I actually found the story kind of boring. The game tried to be "scary" at sometimes too which in my opinion they failed really bad at.

But this is just my opinion (I base everygame mainly on story, and its hard to do when my favorite game happens to be metal gear).

But I hope people can make great games with this engine, because I'm really looking forward to them.

» I don't call it fault and I don't call it cheap

As quote from Mel Gibson's hollywood role as William Wallace "FREEDOM!"

» @ eclipze

well i agree my favorite game is metal gear aswell, and didnt mean to throw you in the group i just hate when people play for 20 minutes and say its *****ty. I personally loved the game overall but hated the ending. Metal Gear games are hard to compete with story wise since the creator is a mad man(greatest thinker ever) so your standards are kind of high lol

by robbo16 - 2008-04-08 11:21
» i cnt say i liked crysis

it diddnt have the great story tht some games have it metal gear even (longer but not as engadging) cod 4. i have cod 4 on pc its so much better than the consoles(faster paced shooting) but it seemed like all effort was put into making the game look really good i cnt even play it on very high (dx10) and high looks class its really steps ahead of any console i just dont think the game will port well and will be stripped of everything that made it good on a pc due to the sheer ammount of power it needs to run

by Eclipze_ - 2008-04-08 23:04
» cod4

Now I know your lieing out of your ass with this one. cod4 is exactly the same on the consoles as it is on the PC (with the exeption that you can lean in the PC version). The game looks exactly the same (and my PC can run everything with max settings). If your talking about crysis you already saw what they said in the article. It'll be able to run at high or close to high, so there ya go.

Obviously you can aim faster with every game on the PC, but thats no a reason to say its better

by Eclipze_ - 2008-04-08 23:15
» Its like saying

if you put your aiming sensitivity high on your game and another person has it slow then your game is better..

Really makes no sense.

" This no HDD thing is going to continue to cause problems for the 360 in the future"

always on the 360's case eh.

no, the hdd is not a problem on the 360. it's about as big a problem as the slow blu-ray drive is in the ps3. that is, whatever issues there are, devs always find ways around it.
