Crytek: Crysis 2 performs a bit better on PS3 than Xbox 360 |
Listed in: PS3, Xbox 360 Tags: crysis 2, Crytek, playstation 3 updates

Crytek had to overcome some problematic issues to put CryEngine 3 on consoles, but overcome them they did. Now, with development on Crysis 2 commencing, they've found that they're getting a bit more performance from Sony's PS3 console compared to the Xbox 360.
"At the moment, we're getting slightly more performance from PS3 compared to 360," Crytek's business development boss Carl Jones told PSM3.
That's not to say the Xbox 360 version is lagging far behind, though. Jones added that products using their new engine "are going to come out as the best looking, or at least in the top three, on every platform."
Jones also noted that despite the problems other studios have encountered when developing for PS3, Crytek's experience has been all smooth so far.
"We haven't found it more difficult to develop for PS3," Jones said. "We're lucky in the fact that we've come to the generation slightly later than other people - the ones who were trying to build the first technology and games were surprised at how different the PS3 was.
"We took our time and worked out the right way to approach it."

I've tried to force myself to play that game and the gunshots just sound like a water pistol. I know that's a small thing but I just don't feel the power of the gun whenever i'm shooting. That's just one of the problem that bug me so much.
I really wanted to like Crysis but I just couldn't. I found it some what boring. I'll give it another go and try to finish off the game.

Since when exactly has disc space had ANY relation to texture detail? Texture detail is more about RAM as you can't just stream textures like you can music tracks, they have to be in memory REAL fast.
Now consider that at assuming an equal split between system RAM and graphics RAM, the PS3 and Xbox 360 have identical amounts. Now perhaps the PS3 can use slightly better texture compression if the SPEs can help with that, I do not know. But its unlikely to be day/night difference.
Of course that is not entirely true as the PS3 does have its RAM split down the middle but the Xbox 360 does not, it has 512MB you can allocate how you want. So any system memory saved can be used for textures instead, giving Xbox the edge on texture detail.
Now bear in mind that the Xbox is far more memory efficient than PS3 as every new feature running in the background of EVERY game, has to still work with old games, so it fits in the same RAM as day one. The PS3 on the other hand did not define such a RAM limit, so each extra function (custom soundtracks, in-game chat, etc) that you add to a PS3 game eats away at the RAM left for the game.
So overall, the Xbox has HUGE advantages and games actually have to use LESS RAM on PS3 than on Xbox 360, to have the same functionality.
At the end of the day, the fact Xbox is using DVDs has very little bearing on texture detail.
The PS3 games that look amazing is more down to spending more time and money developing them, a risk few developers are willing to take.

so disc space has alot of relation to texture detail infact with alot of aspects of what makes a game good
btw you can allocate the ps3 anyway you want as well its just starts of split down the middle.. also ps3 ram is faster which makes of tor the fact that you have it split
also the ur bs about every new function taking up more ram... um since launch sony has add tons more functions and freed up 70mb of space for devs to use for games
anyways i just proved you wrong with every point you made ... nice try though
