Crytek confirms Free Radical purchase, studio to become Crytek UK |
Ó

Here's another development in Crytek's purchase of Free Radical Design. After Rob Yescombe and ReSolve Partners confirmed the sale, it's now Crytek's turn.
Apart from confirming their purchase of the Haze and TimeSplitters developer, Crytek also revealed that Free Radical will be renamed Crytek UK. Here's what Crytek boss Avni Yerli had to say:
The combination of this team, the Crytek network and our CryENGINE technology will be a foundation for outstanding gaming experiences and a magnet for the best talent in the UK.
Seriously, I can't wait for what Free Rad-,er, Crytek UK's first game will be.

Crytek, the creators of Crysis, the most graphically stunning mediocre FPS ever buys Free Radical, the creators of HAZE, the most graphically inept mediocre FPS ever.
Together they will form... Cry Radically! The creators of the most graphically mediocre mediocre FPS ever!
Stay tuned!
meh can haz TS4 nowz?
I don't know if we'll be able to handle this...
crysis, the best looking mediocre fps
Time Splitters Future Perfect, the worst looking, great fps
hopefully they'll make a great looking and playing game
something tells me you never played/beat Crysis or you wouldn't be calling it mediocre. I don't think it's amazing but it is a lot better then mediocre.
TimeSplitters Future Perfect did not look bad. I thought the graphics were good. It's PS2 graphics remember.
This news comes with great uncertainy. What will happen? Will CryTek UK ever be as good as the Free Radical Design before it? Will TimeSplitters 4 meet our expectations?
I hope so.
And HAZE wasbn't terrible looking. It was disappointing graphically but not terrible looking. It didn't stop the story being good. I thought it proved a good start for Free Radical Design entering PS3 game developement. Unfortunately people didn't catch on because of bad reviews (I hate reviews).
Shame but perhaps this may have even been for the best? We'll see.
I actually had Haze pre-ordered for release day! I didn't like it. Sure the graphics weren't bad... they weren't particularly good either tho. It was the terrible AI, bad level layouts, clunky vehicles, subpar weapons, lame story telling, stereotypical (to a bad degree) characters, generic multiplayer, reliance on CG to promote the game, short single player and overall lacking gameplay that made it a bad game.
It was a total shocker because of a few things. 1 - It's Free Radical - who made the great timesplitter series and key parts of it's team developed Goldeneye back in the day.
2 - It was a hype machine like no other. According to many sources this was Sony's Halo Killer. I even remember reading previews that were pointed toward this being bigger than Crysis - which was released around the same time.
Haze honestly felt like an indie developer's first jump into the genre who wanted to be like all the "big guys". Sad.
I can see why people wouldn't like it I suppose but personally I found the nectar element fun. The careful, strategic gameplay made it fun. The co-op was appealing to me. I always like co-op in games. It had parts to it that I didn't like but most of it was good in my opinion.
I don't think HAZE when I think Free radical Design though. I think TimeSplitters.
