Criterion responds to Burnout Paradise demo criticism

Criterion Games bawwwws - Image 1Electronic Arts' Burnout Paradise (Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3) demo is out, and so are the rants of fans of the popular car crashing series' latest installment who didn't enjoy what they briefly experienced. What does developer Criterion Games have to say to those complaining? Stop sending letters with bad spelling, because you haven't played the actual game.

Creative Director Alex Ward and the Burnout Team replied to all naysayers who expressed their discontent with Burnout Paradise, saying "we think we made THE best demo released all year - you don't see many other games getting an online enabled demo up on both systems before launch."

The development team also pointed out some misconceptions, such as feedback actually helping in making the game better. "The demo was made AFTER work on Paradise was completed, so no, we won't be using internet 'feedback' to tune the game," Ward clarified.

Ward also said it makes him smile when people argue about which Burnout title is the best, because Criterion is working hard to ensure that the latest is better and an evolution from what came before it. After dubbing Burnout Paradise as "a WAY WAY better" game than Burnout 2 and 3, he commented:

As to those who can proclaim from a taste of the demo that Burnout 2 was the best game (always nice to see all those Gamecube owners on the internet who haven't played the game since B2! ) or that B3 is the better game - again, I can only smile.

Criterion stressed out that the retry feature is simply not necessary in Paradise. Gamers get annoyed since there's no way to restart a race after messing up other than manually driving to the starting line, but Ward explained how all is good because loading times were eliminated in return.

Here's another interesting tidbit that other video game developers should take note of:

In fact, we hate loading with a passion now. Games like Burnout Paradise and Uncharted Drake's Fortune (and Haze I think and GTA) keep you IN THE GAME rather than watching what is usually a very dull screen. (At least we used to write special tips for our load screens when we did them, most people simply do nothing....)

I thought it was very good for a demo. Too many damn emo kids crying about free stuff again, go figure.

I thought it was a GREAT demo! There's a huge amount of replayability simply for the fact that the online mode was included. I have a huge amount of fun just crashing into the other 3 drivers all over the map. It was definitely one of the best (console) demos of the year, imho.

i thought the demo was awesome. my friends played it into the wee hours of the night a few days ago, and had a blast. there were a few glitches, but they could have been due to the fact that my internet connection sucks by today's standards.

I'm surprised anyone even complained about the demo. Really what could they possibly complain about? How they have to drive back to where the challenge begins? So what? Stop being lazy and drive your a$$ back there, lord knows you need the practice if you're complaining that you need a retry feature. The demo is awesome, and it has me sold, this game is definite purchase for me. I wish other developers put longer demos out there for us to try. Most of the time demos are just too short and then some games don't offer any demo at all(here's looking at you Assasins Creed and Lair)

I loved the demo but enjoyed the Crackdown and Bioshock demos a lot more. As for Burnout Paradise, I'm going to love the game, but I do miss some of the features they have taken out of Burnout 3. But what they have added is amazing and we give the series a totally new feel.

# My Pros And Cons Of Burnout ParadiseCHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS 2007-12-23 03:33
I have played the demo and have mixed feelings about the game. The graphics and depth is great but it is now almost like the newer Need For Speeds regarding layout. I do enjoy the open environment layout but also miss the linear stages from the old series. Some people who enjoyed the old series may be intimated by Burnout Paradise because it is no longer arcade style pick up and play game. For instance, my girlfriend loves playing Burnout 3 because it is fun and easy to figure out which is why she played it. I later showed her the demo for Burnout Paradise and she didn't like it. She said it was too hard and she wouldn't know which direction to turn. Sometimes myself I got annoyed having to look down at the map to see which way to go only to look up and find myself crashing into things I normally wouldn't have. Plain annoying. Oh well. I am definitely going to buy this game although my girlfriend will no longer play it with me. I also hope EA makes another Need For Speed Most Wanted. As far as open environment racers go, NFSMW was the bomb!

# no one is complaining about getting a demo...rollypoly 2007-12-23 04:22
people are just expressing their opinions of the burnout series.

honestly, i've played almost all of the burnout games, and i still prefer number 2 to any of them.

yeah some of them had nifty features, but the level of fun in 2 has yet to be matched, imo.

What racing game demo gave you more or better this year? PGR4 was my fav racer till this demo. BP is going to be awesome even if it's just on par with the demo.

To mention NFS Pro Street with this game is like saying the Sega Genesis and the PS3 both have superior graphics. NFS is a series that's been recycled down to pure water and Burnout continues to refine, rebuild, and create.

There's just no comparison! And to say the older versions are better means you can't rise to the challenge!

That the controls are different to the previous Burnout games. Hopefully we can change back to the 'classic' Burnout control scheme as the new one just doesnt feel right to me.

The only other thing I would pick at, is that the announced Paradise soundtrack is absolute recycled rubbish. Half the tracks have been in previous Burnout games!

But other than that I think that the demo was excellent.

However is does sound like the devs are a bit up themselves. Its like they don't care about what the fans think of their game. A game that is supposed to be made FOR the fans.

I was one of those people that were complaining. I liked the demo as well, but I for one feel leaving out a restart feature, will just cause more trouble than it is helping. That is the one thing I would have liked to have in this game. It does feel like NFS now.

The Demo was the best one i've played to date. You also have to remember its only a freaking demo not the actual game. The actual game could have those features you people are whining about.

I just don't see how the controls are bad its actually very good. The only thing that would be better if i had the Dualshock 3 controller so the trigger button or accelerate button wouldn't be so easy to push all down.

Other than that the best demo i played on the PS3 in a long time.
