Complimentary co-existence possible with Uncharted game and movie? |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: Naughty Dog, playstation 3 updates, uncharted

"I think they can exist side by side and separate," said Amy Henning on the Uncharted games and movie. "[A]nd if they complement each other, that's all I think our viewers and our fans want."
"I don't think that anybody would agree that any sort of slavish interpretation in either direction, whether you're making a game based on a movie or a movie based ona game, is not the right way to go, because there's differences in our media that should be taken advantage of, right? I think that's why a lot of video game movies do fail, because they're trying to be too slavish and literal, not just taking an idea and making a good film outof it."
She also opined that filmmakers are faced with the challenge of not only bringing justice to the game through the film, but also to bring justice to the film in itself. Despite these hurdles, however, Henning remains optimistic about this trend in adaptations. "It's exciting to think that there's real quality filmmakers and producers out there, they want to make really good films inspired by these games."

The reason video-game movies fail are simple. A) The budgets are usually nothing and thus effects are skimped, locations hashed and actors taken only because they're cheap and B) When a director tries to take the story of a game and play it out exactly in a film... they ALWAYS take shortcuts or just assume that if they change parts of the story it isn't going to matter - I've not seen a game movie actually stay 100% faithful to it's origins..
Look at Silent Hill FFS. They nailed the atmosphere but changed key elements in the story, hired lame actors and never seemed to take it just far enough to get into the weird that is SH.

......AHAHAHAHAHHAHAH A, what!? no, it's the other way around, most fail because they aren't slavish ENOUGH and do nothing but take creative liberties in a sad attempt to "make a good film of it". Unfortunately, gamers' ideas of "a good film" are likely to be quite different from critics' and ignorant movie goers.
this lady......ahahahaha, crack kills

I'm convinced that the only way a game based movie would be good is if it starts out with a game with a good story (which UC has), and if creative control is left in the hands of the game creators. I had high hopes for the Halo movie simply because Bungie was going to have so much control. It could have set a precedent for game movies... but then it got cancelled (probably for the same reason).
Oh well, at least we can be thankful that Uwe Boll isn't involved
