Comparing the old and new Final Fantasy XIII battle interface

When Final Fantasy XIII (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) comes out, I expect to spend countless hours grinding, which is why I'm hoping the battle system won't be a hassle to play. Thanks to new high quality screens from the most recent FFXIII spread on Famitsu, we're now able to take a closer look at the updated battle system.

Here's an old screenie with Lightning you should now be long familiar with:

New Vs. Old: Final Fantasy XIII Battle Interface - Image 1

And here's the scan showing the new battle system, also with Lightning:

New Vs. Old: Final Fantasy XIII Battle Interface - Image 1

Some notable differences is the arrangement of the battle menu, which dropped the stacked command menu arrangement for a column format. The ATB meter, which was found with the HP bar, has been relocated to the top of the battle menu. The HP bar still remains on the lower right hand corner.

Also changed is the mysterious circular meter on the top right corner, which was replaced by a chain bar which FFXII gamers should be familiar with. The setup kinda reminds me of a mix between FFVIII and FFVII, which is no surprise since the guy behind the FFXIII design is Motomu Toriyama, who worked on both previous games.

I posit a notion of how the battle system will work. Judging from the fluid motions of Lightning and her enemies from all the scans we've seen, I can imagine that battles will be continuously in action. Villain and hero alike won't be panting stupidly in one place to wait for our commands. Instead, we input commands as we like, and it'll just be up to the ATB when to execute them, resulting in one fluid battle scene with no pauses.

Of course, I'm just speculating. We'll see how it really works when Square Enix finally releases a battle scene vid with more details. Any of you have other ideas?

Xbox'd

Comparing those 2 screenshots is like night-and-day. This game has been Xbox'd. Sad.

Looks like someone's got issues. Seriously, you're acting like a lil immaturish (not to mention) whiny person.

...

Damn even FFXIII became a reason to hate the 360. Just chill because I know you'll most likely get Versus instead of this game.

I just hope it's more FFX than FFXII

In FFXII you had nothing to do. All the actions were chosen in the automated actions menue.... nothing to do. I beat all the bosses without touching the controller but for the 1st half or less.

Have to agree

That the first screen looks better. Not sure why they changed it so much. Hopefully the second one looks better when put into action cause the first screen if I remember was during the battle while the second one looks like a time when you would input commands.

!

GEEZ!!! Of course the first image looks better, the reason why is because the second image is a scan.... a magazine scan. It even says "...here's the scan showing the new battle system..." It has nothing to do with the xbox 360. That's just the type of image quality you get from a scan.

Some battle details

Source: http://www.the-magicbox.com/0812/game081231a.shtml A number of new elements can be found in the battle scene images. * It is possible to evade and counterattack * Lightning's weapon can morph into other weapons in battles. For example from gun to blade * You can score multiple hits on an enemy, or an enemy can have multiple targets * You can hit multiple enemies at once with specific attacks/weapons * It is possible to store multiple commands and execute them at once * There is no MP in the game, each spell/skill has a maximum number of use or require charging to use * The game seamlessly transition between field and battle scenes * In the field you can see the enemies, warning signs appear on enemies who aware of your presence * There is a Chain Bonus and Break Bonus system in the game, details unknown * You can visually see the enemy name and the HP in battle

Even though...

I believe this game won't be as great and some people are hyping up, i'm still going to buy this game for trophies.

You are a moron

Thank goodness you're a moron. The first image is from the first trailer ever released, I can't believe you haven't figured out yet that the first trailer had no in-game footage except for lightning walking through the forest. It may of looked like it was in game but it was not at all. It was all pre-rendered cut-scene material spruced up to look like it was in game. And you bought it like a blind fool. The second image is actual in game footage. You're comparing cgi to in-game graphics. Congratulations, at that rate you would of slagged every final fantasy ever made off for not having amazing graphics for it's time. Honestly, most of your morons think just because you can see a battle menu on the screen it means that's in-game footage.

@lolingatyou,

okay firstly I dont know who the ***** you are, secondly, never address me in that tone, you seem to be nothing waste space. I honestly cant help it if your some sort of huge cream your pants ff fanboy, i'm entitled to my opinion as much as anyone else that has ever graced a message board, thirdly, originaly final fantasy 13 was a ps3 exclusive, the game had to be toned down to be ported to the 360, that is solid well known fact, if you *****ing look at the model of the whatsher name, you will see sevral differences, for instance her hair was lobed off because the 360 simply just have the power to handel the frills and extra animations meaning yes!!! it damned well did have to be wartered down and anyone with an iq above 3 would know this,, how dare you come in here with your damned nonsence proclaiming your bull*****, anyone with *****ing eyes can see that the final fantasy 13 we see in the second picture is not what we where originaly promised. and no ammount of trolling or stupidity from your part is going to change anyones *****ing mind about this bull***** game, go back and hide under the *****ing rock your mother found you under you worthless peice of fanboy exciment..
