Compare and contrast: America's babies vs UK's stackers |
Ó
The UK PS3 ad features gameplay for MotorStorm, but before you get to that, you actually a niche sport known as speed stacking. Simply put, it's the rapid stacking of cups in specific orders and patterns. In this case, you get to see different variations of cup stacks, with the most difficult stack combination being done by the girl in yellow below.
Now, Sony's UK advertisers were probably thinking of showing off the PS3's processing power through metaphor, and personally, it's actually pretty apt. The woman in yellow is performing what is known as the Cycle Stack, a rapid-fire set of cup stack combinations consisting of a 3 cups-6 cups-3 cup setup, followed by a 6-6, a 1-10-1, and ends with a compressed version of the 3-6-3.
While that may not make sense to you now, observe the people moving in the background. The cup stackers are performing complex combinations in the time it takes one person to complete a step, which is probably the intended message for the ad. Metaphorically speaking, that's the kind of power they want to impress upon their audience, and it works (if you let yourself watch it more than once).
Of course, that's just personal opinion. What about you? Which one strikes you as the more noteworthy PS3 ad? America's Baby ad, or the UK's cup stacking video? See them both below, and let us know what you think.

Probably the UK ad. I've been watching the baby ad on Playstation.com for a while and I still don't get the message. I have some theories but they don't seem rational. Did the PS3 possess the baby or something? The UK ad seems to deliver the message more clearly.
UK ad HANDS DOWN, c'mon, the UK ad got a VERY catchy song and very persuasive voice, US ad, no catchy music just creepy sounds and no voice, let alone persuasive. And not to mention that the UK ad is soo straight forward and to the point and it MAKES SENSE and man does it paint a picture of the PS3s processing power (and the speed of that girls hands :) )
With such a comercial mothers wont buy a ps3 for their kids not even if it was $100. It just looks diabolical.
I have no sound on my computer, and even then the UK ad looks way better and seems to tell me a little bit more about the PS3. This is living!
as much as i liked the UK's ad, it was boring, and the cups thing was dumb, but it was still straight forward about what they were talking about. the baby was very catchy and i think its trying to say it can simulate and process so many different things/emtions all at once. it makes you think, and makes you watch the commercial untill you figure out what it means, at least for yourself. plus i think its pretty funny how they baby is extream bi-polar
Sony in the U.S. doesn't know jack about ads.
When they are showing dustballs and babies instead of gameplay, which is what Nintendo and Microsoft are doing, they are losing game sales and market share!
I DO want to be a Keytar Hero!
