Church to Sony: apology accepted, but it's not enough

Church of England - Image 1The last time we reported on the current scuffle between the Church of England and Sony, the latter had already sent out a formal letter apologizing for the hub-bub caused about displaying a photo-realistic Cathedral in Resistance: Fall of Man - but Sony did not accept that there was truly a connection between the real-world 21st century Manchester and fictional, alien-overran-world Manchester.

This wasn't enough for the Church of England. Their reaction to Sony's letter, verbatim:

We acknowledge the admission by Sony that the building in the game is Manchester Cathedral. We thank Sony for the apology they have made. However, we do not move from the position that we are against violence and especially the gun violence seen in this portrayal of the Cathedral.

We are pleased that Sony wish to come and meet with us in Manchester as today we offered them such an invitation. In the meeting with Sony we will discuss our outstanding demands, how this game came to be produced and where the images of the Cathedral came from.

Outstanding demands? Does this mean negotiations and yet more debates? One thing's for sure, though, it's not over between these two sides just yet. Updates as we get them, and meanwhile, let us know what you think by your comments.

» Wtf?

They are still going on about this? Sony by know should know what these money hungry bastards want.

I agree with the church completely, games cause so much violence, unlike organised religion. Organised religion never caused crusades or suicide bombers did it?

Hey Church of England!

Have you read the bible latey?

Maybe you should try and cut everything out of that first.... like hookers, death and much more

they are trying to reach out and touch young people by attacking a beloved video game company? WTF ARE THEY THINKING? the only thing they are accomplishing is making themselves look like money hungry jackasses. who cares if someone decided to have players defend a church against aliens IN A GAME? it's not like sony physically went down to their church and had a shootout!

» Pfft

Someone needs to tell the church to ***** off, all they want is money out of it anyway. Can you believe that? They actually asked for money? So they are pissed that Sony is using this church to portray death and violence...but then they are willing to take some money for it?

» Ok...

So your against violent movies, TV, and radio? And your saying that games caused crusades and suicide bombing...LoL maybe you cant see that a game is FAKE, not us. And seeing violence dosnt make some1 automatically go killing people. Its dumbas5 parents who cant raise there child well enough that causes that.

Think about wat your saying. Violence is everywhere you look, but u act like people r stupid.

This church wants money... I can bet there going to DAMAND a donation.

by Eclipze_ - 2007-06-17 07:32
» Violence?

I dont think they understand that violence is fake in a game. They wont get anything out of this cause this game wasnt meant for kids. Its there parents who buy them the games and dont supervise them.

» and they are angels?

If the church stopped the invasion of the Chimera by the hand of god they wouldn’t complain.

But a war damaged church? No, that’s not possible, god would not let this happen, because they don’t believe in violents do they? What were the crusades all about? Man, they killed more people in name of god than anyone else and now they are acting like angels? Please…

by syfghjskd - 2007-06-17 08:11
» i think

the church is just annoyed as all the kids have been taken away from the church by playing games and so the priests have no one to 'play' with. they saw a church in a game and started a lawsuit cos of it

» Pfft...

The CoE needs to pull the monumental stick out of their collective a$$ and just drop it. Religious hypocrites are so concerned about everyone else's souls maybe they should concern themelves with where they'll be going thanks to their greed

» =/

so this is the problem HD causes... i've negver seen the church complain about anything in SD =/

by God DAMMIT - 2007-06-17 08:59
» Stupid Church of England...

Someone should hack their website and give them something to really bi7ch about... Jesus Christ (yes i know i am swearing in the name of God/Christ/Allah/Obiwan) these guys just give religion a bad name... Its not like Resistance advertises the fact that "you get to fight in a church!!! Buy our game"

People are taking games way too seriously, next thing you know there won't be any more Tomb Raider games since all the different agencies in charge of protecting the "wonders of the world" would be suing Eidos since "You can shoot mummies in the pyramids of egypt... Its the Pharoah's tomb... thats desecratory!" etc.

» church complains

» people

people take a lot of things too seriously now days. Such as changing 'bah bah black sheep' lyrics to 'bah bah rainbow sheep' or the fact kids in school are not aloud to run around in the playgrounds anymore and well, you know list goes on. Makes you wonder if the worlds gone crazy sometimes. But I guess you could relate 'games' to how people used to react to 'rock + roll' in the past. Most people that react to a violent game don't actually play them, they just react badly when they see it. I recon if these people where to play them they would think differently. But in the churches case their just using that fear to try and extort money :-/

» LIVE is EVIL spelled backwards

hey sony how much money is the church asking for?

just give it to them and have em sign a contract never to bother your corporation ever again.

we all know this church movement is not affecting the sony corporation that bad but is totally damaging the faith of millions christian gamers all over the world.

and hey church why not sue Bill Gates, he's got plenty of FPS games that involves church in it, shooting real life people specially police officers and best of all he is the richest person in the world, you can milk him tons of money and will still never ever run dry of dough.

by Karlos - 2007-06-17 23:30
» What about the movies?

How many major motion pictures have been made where churches are the centre of shoot outs and excessive violence? yes i know there are too many to count and i dont see any church group trying to demand 'donations' from them??? But dont even get me started on a 'donation' I define a 'donation' as a generous gift from the goodness of someones heart, not a 'pay us or we will fk u over'. Oh and i love this "In the meeting with Sony we will discuss our outstanding demands" Demands eh? WTF are these people, terrorists? And who the fk gives them the right to dictate what should be done with a product that really has absolutely fk all to do with them? Wow it has a level with a church that 'looks' similar to a real building. Should those greedy bastards actually get money from Sony, ill know the next time i go to church and have to make a 'donation' Ill slip a bit of paper that says, 'Didnt you get enough off Sony you greedy bastards?'

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-06-17 23:38
» money hungry bastards?

Why did sony even bother to apologize at all?

Words are cheap, cotroversey is expensive, $ony is greedy and doesn't care.

» Hmmmm....

This entire argument brings to mind the game Time Splitters 2. In one of the missions you portray an undead priest blowing up stain glass windows in what I believe was a representation of Notre-Dame-des-Champs in Paris. Now if we are to believe that video games do indeed inspire violence in people and also paint a pseudo surreal image of the world then that means if priests were to play Time Spiltters 2 they would try to kill themselves be resurectted by some form of black magic (totally against Jebus) and go feral on some stain glass windows. My point is just because there is something neat in a game does not mean you will try to do it in real life or that you even can. Try recreating the situation in Resistance, first off in the game you shoot at Aliens. I believe that if you can find some church going aliens then maybe this game will instruct people to maybe go to church and kill aliens, in the game you never even kill humans. Personally, I would not mind busting a cap in ET.

by Hakk3d - 2007-06-18 06:28
» OMG

This is retarted so what if they have a church in the game its not like theyre planning to attack the church with aliens!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

» i wanna buy this game now... i hate the church

i just wanna say, that i almost wanna buy the game because i'd love to piss of the church people and shoot some people in their digital church just to piss them off... and i've actually played the game at my friends house... the church should just be happy that we're riding the world of evil... instead of being the evil... could you imagine a game where you play as hitler... and you have to go about doin everything he did in hopes of having the pure race he was looking for... ***** these people should just be glad we're fighting for the right side....
